New costume for Jasmine?

An illusion neckline with a collar isn't unheard of, though it is usually done with a strapless/sweetheart style rather than v-neck/straps. If they had kept some of her original top, it would probably look more natural

But I do see what you're saying - it has a bulk too it that shouldn't be there, but I think that's a result of the fabric and construction they chose.

I think that's it -- the bulk. The extra piece looks like a very heavy fabric. Maybe it's just the photo that makes it look so heavy, but your comments also seem to indicate that the fabric choice/construction isn't great. In a thinner fabric it would look more appropriate and less like an afterthought. I'm not opposed to it wholesale, but something just isn't coming together right for me.

If you're going to go all historical on this, PRINCESSES would not be wearing outfits reserved for the slave/harem girls in her father's kingdom.

If we're really going to go all historical on this...from an admittedly brief bit of research, we don't know if anyone would be wearing an outfit like Jasmine's! Agrabah is supposed to be near the Jordan River, so we're talking ancient Israel / Syria / Egypt-ish. Obviously the era is pretty unknown, but probably something along these lines. The laws on veiling and women's attire from that time are not well-known, especially as there were numerous kingdoms and (doubtless) varying fashion trends as well. Not a lot of art contemporary to these periods is available for people to use to fill in the gaps, either, and what little there is primarily shows men, probably of the upper classes.

Apologies in advance if this is a topic you know a lot about-- I don't at all, but I wasn't able to find much either. ^^ I'd imagine it's more of a play to appease modern Muslims bordering on conservative rather than ancient ones. Or maybe they thought it would also please conservative non-Muslim parents and that they'd kill more birds with one stone.

Hmmm ... your comment made me think that maybe it was a request from Morocco that she be more covered up.

On a slight OT note just curious if there have been onset pictures for OUAT!Jasmine yet

Part of the fantasy for me is seeing characters come alive in costumes I recognize from the movies. Princess Tiana's gorgeous wedding dress, Belle's beautiful yellow ball dress, Jasmine's edgy, but beautiful Arabian outfit. When you change the costume you give me disassociation of the emotions I get from the movie that I relate to the character itself.

I'm a grown adult and like most kids, I recognize this is Jasmine in a different outfit. It's not the outfit I have come to know her in, but recognize her enough to know it's her. However, I would not line up to take a picture with her because I want to see the Jasmine from the movie; not Jasmine as Disney has "reimagined" her. I hope it's not a permanent change.

While I somewhat agree, keep in mind a number of the princesses are now in "reimagined" dresses. Ariel in her human dress is nothing like what we see in the movie, Pocahontas has a newer look, Mulan is now more cultural than warrior. Change happens sometimes.

I am seeing a lot of people say, upon further inspection, its a beautiful dress/outfit and that its something that "fits" Jasmine "meaning I suppose that her character would wear something like that. Those are all fair points, but when my child doesn't recognize the character because the outfit isn't something out of the movies, that's the problem. She doesn't look like Jasmine anymore.

So does your child not recognize Ariel when she's wearing her blue dress? It's not even a color that she wears in the movie
How will they react to Tiana and Naveen in the new stage show where the two are wearing completely new outfits?
How similar does the outfit have to be? Pocahontas doesn't wear her mothers turquoise necklace anymore, and that was a pretty iconic piece.

And what about the million and one outfits that Mickey and Pals wear?

I would hope that, when meeting the characters, your child has reached the point of object permanence (baring any developmental disabilities of course) and understands that changing clothes doesn't change a character.

It's an argument that has made the rounds and just doesn't hold up. She is still wearing the same colors, her hair is the same style, and more often than not she is standing right next to Aladdin.
More importantly, I have seen children's reactions to Jasmine since the outfit change and thusfar I have not heard any one of them question whether or not the woman standing there was Jasmine

If that happens you simply step in and say, "Oh look! It's Jasmine!".

Noob question maybe, but is Morocco a particularly big source of Disney tourists? (Interestingly my parents are going on a cruise to Morocco later this year!)

OH MAN, I totally forgot about that! Google informs me she's been cast (loved the actress when she was in Galavant) but no in costume photos yet. :D

No matter what the motivation, whether to be p.c. or to revitalize merchandise sales, it seems bizarre to me that the company would take extremely well-known, beloved characters and try to change their canonical look as set down in the classic movies.

I don't think it's that simple at all. Sleeping Beauty/Aurora should really be in a blue dress for the most pivotal part of her movie, but they wanted to set her apart from Cinderella so they put her in pink. Her "Canon" however points to blue in my opinion...

I read in several places that this change was made because there had been complaints about Jasmine showing too much skin. I completely disagree, and those who have that complaint have never lived through the 70s and ever saw kids wearing tube tops and halter tops. She wasn't dressed like a porn star. Far from it. If it was done for cultural reasons, that even makes less sense because Jasmine comes from a very long time ago. I always thought she came from approximately the same time frame that Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie can't from. Putting aside the blond cast to play someone born in Baghdad, 2000 years ago. It makes me shudder to think how they'll dress Moana when she eventually shows up at the parks.

Perhaps a lot of the complaints were coming from Jasmine's friends?? Yes Ariel's friends are similarly dressed with fins, but since she has fins she stays seated and it's a lot tougher for men to "hug" her while she's sitting. The friends who serve as entertainment have every right to prefer "less accurate" (as if they are historical interpreters) outfits if it saves them from sexual harassment.

I don't mind the outfit becoming more conservative, especially if it helps the performers with unwanted comments. For me the problem with the costume is that it looks CHEAP! Definitely like something I could pick up at a seasonal Halloween store.
