New Car Buying

For the last couple years, the defunct Kentucky speedway and adjacent parking lots were covered with ford vehicles waiting for chips. They are now finally mostly gone.
They must be getting lots of chips in. I live near the Ford Truck Plant in Louisville and they have been doing tons of moving of vehicles lately. There is an empty parking lot near my house where busses pick up the drivers and take them to the lots to get the trucks and take them back to the plant for the final chips to be installed.

Yes I read they were taking them to Louisville to have them completed. We drive past the speedway on our way to my step daughter’s house. Last time we went by I was surprised to see far less vehicles there. You can’t see real well from the interstate but you can see some. I looked online and saw a number of stories about them catching up.

This is great! I have a Ford Escape on order, which are built in Louisville. So far, I've been waiting for 3-1/2 months for my car to be delivered.

Escapes had some big delays - there was some sort of problem and the Escape factory had to shut down for a while to give them time to figure out what was going on. My parents recently got a new Escape and they had a long wait to get it too.

Update on our car buying experience - Contacted a Toyota dealer about a Camry online. The car hasn't been built and is due to arrive mid-July. They have three other Camrys coming in three weeks. We are going in tomorrow to see a new Camry that was purchased by someone else so we can't drive it, but we can look at it. If we want one of the cars coming in, we put a $500 deposit to hold it. If we don't like the car when it arrives we can transfer the $500 to a different car. The selling price is the MSRP. I've never had a new car in my life (and I'm 64!), but in pricing cars the used ones weren't significantly cheaper than the new ones.

The car shortage is due to a microchip shortage. Newer cars have a LOT of on board electronics and a reduced supply of microchips is a big problem. No one is purposely manipulating the market.

And we will be manufacturing chips domestically soon, but that's not going to happen overnight.
That seemed to be our experience. We started looking for a new car about 14 months ago. It was to replace a 9 year old car. We had a specific model we were looking for and weren't in a rush. Dealer found/ had a few but they had sunroofs , which we did not want. Finally found one 2 months ago and had a very good trade in for the old car.
We used the dealer we have brought most of our cars from , so that may have helped.

I have a 2015 Toyota with under 100K miles on it. It’s my first Toyota. My Mother’s Day present from my family was a full inside/outside detail. It looks and feels like new. I’m so glad I don‘t have to buy anything right now! We have two slightly older Toyotas in our household, too. Those have over 100K and driving well. We’re down to one Jeep that has about 130K on it. Keeping my fingers crossed it holds out. We need it to tow the boat, lol.

The problem is the person wants a Toyota and there is still a high demand for them so dealers cannot keep them on the lot. As a result there is no incentive for them to cut you a deal. Now if you said that you wanted a Dodge ram or a Ford truck then you would be in a better position to make a deal. The sales of those have started to slow up a bit so some dealers are getting stuck with them and now Dodge is starting to offer manufacturer rebates.

I drive a 2006 Honda Odyssey Touring Van. I plan to drive it for the rest of my driving years. Every little bell and whistle still works. It just turned 105,000 miles. The paint has suffered from the intense sun in my area but that does not concern me. If I were buying a new car, it would be a Honda or nothing.
I'm glad you had a good experience. I bought a new Odyssey in 2010 when I was pregnant with my second. It barely didn't qualify for lemon law so I was stuck with it. The dealership offered to take it back but only at a steep discount so I would have lost a lot of $$. It also handled horribly in the rain. My DH had an Acura RDX that he loved until the Takata airbag scandal. They wanted to take his car immediately and give him a loaner car for an indeterminate time period. We were leasing the car, which was AWD. They wouldn't guarantee that the loaner would be the same size and would also have AWD or 4 wheel drive, both of which we needed. They still wanted us to pay the same amount for his lease though. That made me furious so we traded it in and got him a car that wasn't an Acura. We're never getting another Honda or Acura after those experiences.

No offense to anyone at all…..but those of you saying you drove 10-15 years and just reached 100k. Omg! We drive a lot. I put 50k on my Camry in less than 3 years.
I own a 2018 VW Atlas and love the car. It's the best one I've ever had. I've driven it for more than 100,000 miles without anything more than routine maintenance. My mom's car is unsafe so we're giving her my car and I'm getting a new one. Car shopping has been unpleasant. This will be the first time I've ever paid sticker. I'm quite good at negotiating but the shortages on cars around here is insane and prices for used cars is crazy as well. I ended up choosing a car that will arrive in early October because I was able to customize it to be exactly as I want it. The dealership had already ordered the car but it hadn't been built yet which is how I was able to do that. It's 20k cheaper than the new and gently used options currently on the lot because it doesn't have all of the fancy packages and dealer add-ons that I don't care about.

I'm surprised that you had such a bad experience with your Odyssey. What was wrong with it?

I had a 2008 Odyssey and then a 2020 Odyssey and both were amazing vehicles. We traded the 2008 in with 200,000 miles on it and it was just starting to need work done on it.

Back in 1999 my family bought two Odyssey at the same time. One gave 200,000 flawless miles, the other was trash and was sold before it hit 50,000 miles.

In 2006 my in laws tried again and bought another Odyssey. It too was trash. The brakes never felt like they would stop the car in an emergency, there was a loud whistle from the front drivers side of the car that could never be corrected, and the interior fell apart, seams came undone on seats, the air vents broke, the passenger seat rocked, etc.

Even with a brand that has a reputation for quality, you can get a crappy car.

Soon after we bought it the power steering went out when I was driving and the steering went nuts. The transmission went out twice too. Unfortunately, the second time with a little too late for it to qualify for lemon law.

So, I had the chance to drive a brand new 2024 Subaru Impreza on Saturday. It had 9 miles on it - after I was done! Also, I think I'm going to buy one if they can get me the color I want.

I had to use the lemon law on a Nissan pathfinder. There are multiple ways to qualify. You can also qualify due to days in the shop or repair attempts. Hate you had such a terrible time with your Honda. My two have been flawless - one that I purchased after lemoning out the pathfinder. I needed it to be a reliable car after the year of fighting with Nissan.

Surprised hearing that about the Hondas, but then again, not surprised. Stuff can happen with any vehicle.
One Vlogger posted today he is seeing more and more transmission problems in EVERY brand of car, without regard to whether it was an American Brand of import.
And of course Nissan CVTs have been a nightmare for years, that apparently has not changed.

This was about 10-12 years ago.

CVTs are something I am just learning about since all the cars I have been shopping have them. I was concerned based on some reviews, but I think they have gotten better. It seems that all the midsize/compacts have them anyway, so I don't have much of an option. If I go with this Subaru it will have one - but I really think I'm going to do it. Of course, if I buy a Subaru I have to get a pair of Tevas and start drinking homemade wheatgrass smoothies....

My Hyundai 2016 Tuscon has the CVT and while it did have some issues initially, it was corrected with a software update and it has run flawlessly since. In fact, it's a heck of a fun car to drive because of the CVT ...it's strange because it feels somewhat like driving a stick, which I love. So, here I am 7-years and 120,000 miles later with near-flawless performance. But she's going to get a little break in the summer/fall because there's a new sheriff in town as of Saturday....BroncoBadlands.jpg
