Canon has just announced a new digital slr. Its the digital rebel XTi. Also known as the 400d. It has a 10.2 megapixel sensor. Check out canon's website for more info.

I wonder what the chances of the Rebel XT's prices going down are? I know when I last purchased a digital camera, two weeks later another one came out better than mine and the price of mine dropped by almost half.

DH chickened out on buying it with the Dell discount around a week ago. We want it, but gosh that price tag hurts.

The price on the XT will go down.. Look at the difference in price from the 300D to the 350D... But it won't be immediate, it will happen when the 400D is readily availible.

the self cleaning feature is a good idea if it works...can't say i really care about the mps( i have never printed any larger than 8x10 so don't know how much i'd notice it) but the cmos sensor is better too...oh well...at least in a decade or so i can get it on ebay and my lens will fit

you can't get upset about new technologies.... If you wait 6 months to a year, something will always be imporoved, and if you always wait, you'll never have anything.

it is like computers, they are now comodities.... You know that they will have better ones in 6 months, and the better ones will be cheaper than you paid for yours in a year. But in the mean time you have had yours for that 6 months or a year.

As long as yours is doing what you need it to do, then it is a good one. When it stops doing everything you need, then you upgrade.

I figure in 5 years I'll upgrade my XT, and one of my kids will have a good if slightly outdated dSLR....

It's going to take me a while before I finally buy a dSLR. With new ones getting released all the time, I think it's going to be a while before I'm going to be able to make a decision before my choice becomes obsolete.

it is like computers, they are now comodities.... You know that they will have better ones in 6 months, and the better ones will be cheaper than you paid for yours in a year. But in the mean time you have had yours for that 6 months or a year.

This is the analogy that I used with the salesman at Best Buy. I asked him if there was any chance that a newer model would be coming out soon.

He told me the technology was pretty much capped out on the camera.

This guy really new his stuff, so either he had no clue, or he wanted us to drop the money on the Rebel XT. Probably the latter.

I can sit back and be patient. But it sure would be nice to have a new camera to play with on our trip to the Rocky Mountains in October.

This is why a lot of times its better to not get the highest price dSLR body. Spend the money on the glass. The technology in the lens really isn't going to change, except for maybe the VR/IS lenses, but the glass itself isn't going to get better. A $1700 lens today will hold its value much better than a $1200 body will over time.

When I wrote my review for my D50 on amazon I wrote at the end that considering the price and performance, your better off with the D50 over the D70s, save the (at the time) $300 and put that money towards better lenses. I don't know a whole lot about the Canon line, but it pretty much holds true. Their lenses will far outlive their bodies.

I agree with you 100%

If you buy a Great lens today, it will still be a great lens 10 years from now.
If you buy a great DSLR today, it will be obsolete 2.5 years from now.

Now where do you choose to put the bulk of your investment?

It is very unlikely that in the next 6 months to a year that the photos I take will make my camera obsolete. As long as I always have access to batteries, memory cards, lenses, and can still connect to my computer, my camera will never be "obsolete" (that may happen one day, but not for a while). It may not have as many features as the latest and greatest camera but the term obsolete just doesn't apply.

That being said, I have an XT and love it. But I can hardly wait for the day for my skills to improve enough so that its the camera holding me back from being a better photographer, and not my skills. Until then, I will probably use the XT until it dies on me and spend my money on better glass.

I didn't say obsolete, I said a commodity. I have an old 386/16 computer, that works just fine, runs windows 3.0, has a word processor etc... It isn't obsolete because it still funtions as promised... But the current technology will blow its doors off....

5 years ago, you couldn't find a 4MP cammera that the average person could afford, now that is not that big....

But you can use whatever analogy you would like, if you like something on the market now, wait and it will come down in price, but something will also replace it, that is better, stronger, faster....

I also have several obsolete cammeras you can no longer purchase the film for them. So in time it will happen to ours as well.
