We will be traveling in August. We plan on purchasing annual passes. We already have magic bands. I know in the past you could buy APs ahead of time and they wouldn't be activated until first use. Now with the magic bands and FP+, how will this work? Can I link my APs to my magic bands ahead of time and reserve my FP+ without having the APs activated? Or will my APs activate when I link them to the magic bands?

TIA

When you purchase them in advance you will be issued voucher numbers. You can link the voucher numbers to your MDE account and make FP+ selections. The APs won't be activated. When you get there you will have to go to Guest Relations before you go in to a park and activate them.

Works the same. You can get fastpasses with a linked AP voucher. Doesn't activate until you get to WDW and exchange it.

You can link your AP voucher to your MyDisneyExperience account and make FP+ reservations when your window opens (without activating the AP.)

Just to be clear, you are not linking your tickets "to your MagicBands."
Nothing is "put onto" your MagicBands.

The MagicBands just contain (and weakly "transmit") a unique serial number that is used to access the information that is stored in your MyDisneyExperience computer file.

So, even if you were to lose a MagicBand, the info stays locked in your file.
Disney can just set up a new band (different serial number)
to access the info in your MDE file.
Disney can also issue ADDITIONAL MB's to a guest and each
additional band can be used for the same purposes as the first band.
So, yes, there can be multiple MB's per person, and each of them can be used by that person.

The MagicBand works like the combination to a locked safe, or a key to a locked door.

The MB, itself, is not the file of info or the container of the info.
The MB just unlocks the file of info, allowing it to be accessed from your MDE account when needed.

We just did this. I got an error message when I tried to link the APs to MDE, but after about 45 min on the phone with a very friendly CM, we got them linked.

Also, if you buy the APs online on Disney's site while logged into your MDE account, they link to MDE automatically (no entering of voucher #s required). You make your FP+s in advance just like a normal ticket, and then you just stop to actually activate your APs at Guest Relations or a ticket window once you get to Disney. I was all concerned about the linking process, and it was all for nothing because there was nothing for me to do. It's the one time that MDE actually worked glitch-free!
