Hi :) I'm new to these boards.

I live in Peterborough, ON and I'm trying to plan a trip to Disney World in October. I am wondering how to find a travel agent in my area who knows their stuff when it comes to Disney. The last time we went our travel agent gave us some bad advice and we would like to avoid that this time around.

Thanks, Andrea

WELCOME TO THE DISBOARDS!!!

I don't like using travel agents for my Disney trips. I love doing it myself, and being in control of everything. If I want to make a change, I pick up the phone and call Disney directly. I don't like the thought of a TA maybe not doing exactly what I ask of them. Disney won't allow you to make changes yourself if you originally booked thru a TA. You will get lots of tips on the budget board, the restaurant boards, the resort boards, etc. You can be an expert in no time at all.

Palendat is correct.
Its fun and easy to do it yourself (and you'll find it most likely less expensive than going through a TA).
There is a wealth of information on these boards and I'm sure if you do not find everthing you need after doing searches on the forums, you will find it by asking any questions you want.

Usually I also do not use Travel Agents. Like to do it myself. BUT I have used both CAA and Dreams Unlimited in the past for Cruises. I really liked, Dreams Unlimited. Did it all by e-mail and worked like a chamr. Even had to change cruise dates etc...no issues.

The original poster was asking for a LOCAL (ie. Canadian) agent for assistance. If we can't discuss Canadian-specific issues, what is the point of having this Cdn board :confused3

As a moderator, I feel I can shed some light here.

Users are welcome to discuss their personal experience and share information. Of course! That's what the DIS is all about. but some companies have actively engaged in spamming the boards in the past and have been banned as a result. This means direct links and frequently the 'name' of the company has been entered in the DIS filters.

Personally, if you want to recommend particular agencies or people, I don't see the issue on the Canadian board. This person asked about a Canadian Disney specialist. Answering that question is fair game in my book...

Drag - I can't comment directly on the situations you raise, because I wasn't present for either of them. But on the face of it, speaking broadly, we do allow links directly to pretty much ANYWHERE on the official Disney site and I'm not aware of any prohibition on linking to WestJet vacation offerings. Both should be allowed unless there was a situation specific to the original thread(s) where they were posted that I'm not aware of in particular.

I don't think I'm speaking out of turn when I say that ALL the moderators on the DIS are human and sometimes we make genuine mistakes.. usually born out of a misunderstanding of the rules or guidelines. I know when I was a new moderator, I made a few 'woopsies'. It happens.

I personally apologize to you, on behalf of the DIS, if that has happened to you in the past.; whether it was me or someone else; I'm sorry.

For some more explanation, there are frequently links on the transportation board to airline and car rental discounts that users have found and are sharing with others. That's 100% ok. If "ALAMO" signed up for the DIS and started posting their weekly specials, that'd be something else entirely.

What is not allowed .. would be, if I were a travel agent.. for me to respond..

"Hi, My name is Knox and I'm an agent at Pixie-Dust Magical Dream Getaways. We're Disney specialists located in Woodstock, New Brunswick. We've been business since Mickey was a baby mouse and you can reach me at knox@pixiedustmagicaldreams.com"

And pretending to be a customer and self-promoting is also not allowed.

There are no blanket rules prohibiting the discussion of other companies other than the owners or sponsors. THAT does not happen. The simple fact that there are many threads and mentions of companies in direct competition to Dreams Unlimited should prove this point.

This post quoted below from Webmaster Pete (owner of the DIS) covers a lot of the issues being discussed here and he says it WAY better than I can. Pete was discussing a situation on the transportation board here.. but it applies to the discussion here as well.

... it's not our policy to discuss why we ban certain individuals on the site. While I have the greatest respect for my visitors, I don't necessarily owe them an explanation when I ban someone for spamming my boards. I have VERY strict rules about advertising on the site - the vast majority of those rules apply to my corporate sponsors, and even to me. For example, coprporate sponsors are not permitted to start threads that promote their business - regardless of how much they are paying to be here. They can, however, respond to questions and provide information where appropriate, and they may include links to their business in their signature. This is clearly outlined for ALL corporate sponsors before they come on board. In fact, I recently had to advise one sponsor that if they continuted to post 'spam' on the boards, that I would remove them from the site. I put my money where my mouth is.

Another case in point - I own Dreams Unlimited Travel. How often are you barraged with ads for that? How often do you see us posting on the boards that you should use Dreams? You don't. I'd fire anyone that works for me if I caught them doing it, and every one of them knows that.

These rules are in place for a very specific reason. I want the boards to be a place where real people can share real information - not a place for companies posing as visitors to come here and drum up business. That's not what these forums are for. Believe me, if I could afford it, I would remove EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF ADVERTISING FROM THIS SITE. But, since I can't - advertising is a necessary evil. I think our site has been leaps and bounds better than many others in terms of keeping the commercial end of things to a minimum wherever possible.

That's my .02

Pete

And since it was brought up - I can't speak for the other moderators, because I genuinely don't know who is and who isn't... but as the moderator of this board - I am not a Dreams Agent or a travel agent of any kind. I do the mod stuff on a 100% volunteer basis. My 'real job' is in radio station marketing and promotions.

:)

I am very sorry to make swiss cheese about this thread.. but here's what I've done:

- If your post contained reference to a previously banned poster/company, then it was deleted, per the DIS posting guidelines.

- If you post wasn't recommending a travel agency for the original poster, it was deleted.

They were all intermigled and mixed together and separating was just too darned hard. (I do have another job)

I'm sorry to have to do that.. but I'd rather do that than edit individual posts and so forth.

If a business name or link is blocked by the filter, then that's your cue not to discuss it. Finding creative ways around the DIS word filter is not allowed and will just result in the post being deleted.

It's unfortunate circumstances indeed that one of the few Canadian Disney specialty travel agencies has been banned from the DIS, but what's done is done. Not ALL of them are.. and you are free to recommend from among TA's who aren't. If you really want to recommend a T/A who is banned - send a PM to the poster asking for a recommendation. That's perfectly OK.

Again - I apologize, but the posting guidelines are here for a reason and I think Pete's post explains why very well.

Thanks,

Knox

"I do the mod stuff on a 100% volunteer basis. My 'real job' is in radio station marketing and promotions."

So you're saying you have two volunteer jobs.... :mic:

Just kidding... I did 19 years in radio, stretching from Truro, NS to Kitchener, ON and a few in between. A best friend of mine if the Marketing and Promo guy at a station here in Ontario. I hope you get lots of fun assignments! Have you managed to swing a station contest for a trip to WDW?? Someone would have to escort the winners, of course. ;)

Yay - Thread hi-jack ! Couldn't have happened to a better thread ! ;)

I've actually been working on that.. but last year we gave away a car instead.. ;)

Mustang Convertible. Torch Red. Listen to Win! :)

Some radio companies are better than others. I've been very lucky to work for an excellent company.

I normally don't support a highjacking, but some threads cry out for it!

My friend has managed to tag along for trips to Jamaica, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. He does very well for a small market.

WDW would be a nice family-friendly prize. I hear a lot of stations during this ratings period giving away trips for two to adult-only resorts.

Yeah. Who knows WHAT we'll be doing this year!!??

Maybe Disney? :)

In all fairness, how do we know who is banned and who is not? And leaving in only the references to Dreams Unlimited DOES give the OP a skewed concept of recommendations... I personally had very bad service from DU which was posted and deleted from these boards awhile back ... Does make me think there is a hidden agenda! If I was really cynical, I might say the original poster was planted to cause such problems :stir:

If you really want to recommend a T/A who is banned - send a PM to the poster asking for a recommendation. That's perfectly OK.

I was told the boards also scan the PMs and will ban anyone who makes referrals in this method. Am I incorrect :confused3 Because there really are some good CANADIAN alternatives out there. :flower3:

By the way, I'm in no way affiliated with anyone ... I'm "just" a stay-at-home mom! I've never even stayed at Disney ... but I have looked into it ;)

Ya think? :sad2:

This board obviously has a vested interest in DU, and "they" have every right to only promote who they want. But come on, be fair and just admit that. This problem will keep coming up because people will migrate here looking for TA's, not realize DU is affiliated with it, and innocently ask for recommendations. Lots of people have been happy with other Agents, so they will also innocently pipe up and try to help, only to have someone come along, get their panties in a twist because a banned poster/company was mentioned.
The world is big enough for more than one TA, but if the people who run this place don't feel like it is, then it should be pasted across this place that TAs other than those they are affiliated with can not be discussed.

You know if its banned if get *'s when you type their name or web address. People then try to get around the filter by being creative suggesting you Google certain things because you can't post that web address here. That's not allowed either.

It bothered me that DU was the only reference left - sincerely it really did - I don't like how that looked either.

But at the end of the day that other company IS banned and that is out of my control as a moderator. There are other US-based agencies and at least one other Canadian agency (not affiliated with the DIS) that CAN be mentioned and referred here and posters who wish to do so are more than welcome to do so.

I can't speak to your other experiences because I wasn't there... and don't know the situation. But I can assure you that is NOT the norm here and I will research that and if necessary bring that Pete (the owner of the DIS) attention.

I urge you to review Pete's post earlier in this thread. There are NUMEROUS instances on the transportation board of non-sponsor companies being mentioned. Over on the resorts board there are lots of references there to agencies other than DU. And they are not sponsors of this board in anyway.

While I've never heard of such a thing .. that's not to say it doesn't exist necessarily. I would say that as long as you not doing this 5 x a day .. I can't see it being a problem. An occasional referral in a private message should be just fine.

(Warning: the word filter does still kick-in so there you will need to be creative.. or just have the poster email you back or something)

Tell ya what -- book mark this post and if you do run into problems let me know. I honestly don't think you will.

If anyone has any further questions on this - please feel free to PM me and we can discuss it privately.

And back to your normal thread - there are some great CAA offices for booking Disney that have been mentioned in the past... I'll see if I can find those threads.

And I will add one further note..

I just took about 5 minutes and looked thru this Canadian forum and was able to find examples of both positive and a few negative comments about Dreams Unlimited. And the same for other non-banned competitors...

I was even able to find one thread including comments from a poster in this thread expressing their displeasure with DU.

Such posts are not deleted...

I'm just trying explain - it really is as transparent as we say .. I'm sorry some don't feel that's true.

Ok, beating a dead horse here I know, but you said the above quote. Then, WMKathy says this on another thread:
There's no problem with mentioning a poster who no longer posts here or has been banned, any more than mentioning an active poster would be. Actually, I don't think that there's any way for most posters to know who's been banned or who hasn't.
This is where some of the confusion lies. Rules don't seem to be the same across the board. I never tried to dupe the word filter here, yet my post was completely deleted.

Specifically, again, talking about the individual representative of a banned company is the same thing as talking about the company. Companies don't post. People do. Companies do get banned, based on the actions of individuals who work for them.

We just went thru this over on the transportation board which is where that post from Pete came from.

Talking about a banned individual poster who wasn't promoting a company but banned for other reasons is a different matter which is where Kathy's quote comes from.

That said, I'll be kicking this situation upstairs because I personally don't completely disagree with some of your comments... there HAS been inconsistency here on the Canadian board.

Lastly, MagicKndm, the deletion of your post had nothing to do with other travel agencies at ALL. Your post was deleted because -- as I said on the previous page - posts that had nothing to do with the topic (arguments back and forth) I deleted because I didn't have time to sit down and edit them all or decide 'is this one ok.. is that one ok' .. I just deleted OFF TOPIC posts .. period. Simple solution and no infractions for anyone.

That wasn't my preference but really, as I said I hate making swiss cheese of any thread. BUT very early on this thread had very quickly become arguments back and forth that should be taken to private messages.. those arguments weren't particularly helpful to the OP seeking advice. See the logic?

Now I've made the mistake of openly discussing moderating decisions on the board.. and have broken umpteen rules MYSELF! How do I go about giving MYSELF an infraction. Hmmm.... ? My head hurts. :headache:

Seriously tho, I'll be back in touch soon!

Knox

deleting... I can't be bothered here anymore.

Hmmm.

I'm sorry to see what this thread has turned into. I didn't actually see any of the deleted posts.

Anyway, thank you to everyone who took the time to send me a PM with a recommendation. I really appreciate it and I am sorry that it couldn't just be said out in the open :confused3.
