New 2010 Promotion

I disagree...

I don't like this promotion and one of the simple reasons is b/c I volunteer out the wazoo but odds are the place I donate my time - Church, school, local community events will most likely not make the list of approved organizations.

I will have to decide if I want to find another time to volunteer or not...and yes I will have to make the decision if it is worth it for me to go - we will probably have APs and the other options are not that appealing to me.

AND - I don't believe this will truly foster volunteering - I think people who go will be doing the minimum work to get the tickets. For one year they will get the help but I doubt many of the volunteers will return.

It is my experience in the numerous organizations that I volunteer with that there are people who do and people who don't and nothing really ever changes that.

Yep I agree. I do a lot of volunteering in my DD school, with church and just signed up to be a girl scout leader. I only have so much time so unless something I already do qualifies the promotion will not benefit me.

Good for disney for encouraging more volunteers, but I don't think it will make much of an impact on drawing people to the parks. Especially those that have to travel a distance.

If this is the new promotion, I don't like it either. We have annual passes so we won't be able to take advantage of this promotion.

I am sure Disney has at *least* a year of surveying and research that shows that this will benefit them

I am intrigued on how this all does/will fit into TWWof HP at Universal - are they banking on people already planning on making a trip to see that, so they just want to make sure they include at least 1 day at WDW to spend money on merchandising and food, or will they be rolling out something else when HP actually opens

Discuss.

Well, it's possible that someone might decide to go this year because of this. He or she may have been saving money for some time to afford this trip. And now they can get a free day if they volunteer. Maybe they're lucky--they find a place they can volunteer that is on the list. They volunteer, they get a free ticket--that's $80 less they have to save. I know I couldn't use the free birthday promo--my birthday was during a peak time & I don't like going at peak season. So if I can find a place to volunteer, I think I'll be doing it--and since I don't have a ticket, that's one less day I have to pay for. And I'll be spending money at Disney--hotel, food, the ticket for the other days. So it looks good to me.

But if you are already buying 3+day ticket it is only good for a couple of bucks. If you were going for 3 days or less it would be beneficial.

I'm not so sure. I think they were committed to WWYC for 2010 because the switchover was so costly (and so recent!). However, they wanted out of the birthday thing and this was their exit strategy. This promotion will cost them less $$$ because they eliminated the $75 gift card option. So even if it doesn't increase traffic in WDW, it will stop the bleed of the gift cards. Plus they capped the free tickets for this promo at 1 million. And then there's the goodwill this program *could* generate.

Just my opinion. Might be totally wrong.

I dont get what the big deal is. I looked up our area & the only thing available is sorting food for 2nd Harvest Food bank. Its from 10am to 2pm on a Saturday.

3 hours out of my life is definately worth the fastpasses I'll get when we go.

I would have liked the gift card that they offered for the Birthday promotion but Oh Well:confused3...thats life.

We didnt want to partake in the Birthday Promotion because all of our birthdays are in Peak season... but anyone can do this at any time...and 3 hours is easy!!

I agree with you on about 90% of this - and have said as much earlier on the thread - but note that I said "benefits" them...they may not have a goal of increasing park traffic, who knows?
They could have 5 things they wanted to accomplish this year as a huge, billion dollar multimedia company, and this fit the bill, KWIM? Say they wanted to 1. increase goodwill 2. increase charitable donations for tax write off (as someone else rightly pointed out) 3.Bring over Universal IofA guests for at least a day 4. Keep a high profile on a low budget 5. Have a campaign with low cost but great ROI

Hey, for all we know they are thinking about releasing another movie with the Muppets and that is why they are headlining this thing - killing 2 birds with one stone!

But as a business major who had Disney repeatedly brought up in classes, I have no doubts that they researched this in detail, and they believe it will have the effect they desire, whatever that is

You sad, misguided people.

That's okay. I've accepted that I live in a sometimes selfish society. I'll still volunteer and do what I can to change things for the better. You bitter people can sit back and complain.
I think you misunderstood my post. dj1028 agreed with what you said and I quoted her when I posted, "me too".

Actually they are releasing a new Muppet Movie in the not-to-distant-future. It was announced at Disney's Big media event (whatever that thing was called).
So I think you might have nailed it as to why they are using the muppets to promote this.

I'm sorry. I did misunderstand that post. I feel better now, knowing that not everyone wanted to lynch me.

Hey - yeah - the Muppets were an interesting choice to launch this promotion, weren't they? Hmmmmm.......

Volunteering is my life! I love it! I volunteer a couple times a week for a handful of different non-profit organizations. So this promotion seems right up my alley!

Okay, I'll admit that the "world doesn't need her" comment was a bit harsh, and I apologize. I just get so upset with some people's selfish attitudes. It just seems like this society is becoming a "me, me ,me" society and that we are losing our compassion as a whole. I did not wish her ill and that was a poor choice of words on my part.

Now, as to you defending her reason not to volunteer as she is stretched as far as she can go, that is not accurate. She did not give that as the reason that she would not volunteer. Her reason was that her time was worth more than $8 an hour. That is selfish.

The problem with people like you is your mindset. You automatically equate social programs with hand outs. This is also not accurate. And yes, this attitude is reenforced daily by Fox News. So be a proud, ignorant Fox News viewer and get all of the ignorant and hateful views that they brainwash you into believing.
Well - you say you don't make judgements and name call but you said this about me based on me saying that I understood her point of view?!?!?!

I am very well educated, used to work for a member of congress and am far from ignorant on the issues. Fox isn't the only place I get my news - I actually do pretty extensive reserch on BOTH sides of the issue. After all - that is the responsible thing to do. Don't kid yourself into thinking that the mainstream media actually puts the whole truth out there anymore than Fox does.

You are complaining about people not reading an entire post but I think that if you really read Tammi's post that you would see that she did say she is overextended and that is why she feels this is not worth her time.

I think there are great government programs but there are also a lot of abuses of the system. I think some people will get great benefit from this program and I don't have a problem with the promotion - I think it is a great idea - BUT it is not great for my family.

I also foster volunteering in my children - and we volunteer around my house without any compensation - after all once you get the compensation - you aren't really volunteering are you? I actually would prefer to make the donation of $80 to the Disney Children's Hospital and get the free ticket they offer.

I mean this in all sincerity....

you seem to be posting quickly without thinking about your posts and are actually jumping on people who agree with you...

take a deep breath - it is possible for normal rational people to disagree without becoming irrational.

Sorry I haven't read all the pages in this post... but, I'm hoping someone will help me out... I volunteer a lot with several different organizations in my community, but I've never heard of the Hands On Network, so I'm guessing they aren't part of it. My questions:

1) Can anyone direct me to a list of the organizations in the Hands On Network?

2) Can anyone tell me how (or direct to information on how) my local organizations can get involved with the Hands On Network, so my volunteer hours (and those of others in my community) can count toward this Disney promotion? I think this promotion is a great way to help those organizations promote themselves!!!!

Thanks so much!

I'm wondering where the volunteering opportunities will be though? I just looked up "Points of Light" in Florida and it says there are no offices in this state :confused3

Sorry to report that currently there are no Points of Light Member Volunteers Centers in Florida. http://archive.pointsoflight.org/centers/centerlist.cfm?State=FL

ours is United Way of Tampa

if they thought the birthday was a failure, then I'm sure their research wasn't so great last yr.

If this is the new promotion, I don't like it either. We have annual passes so we won't be able to take advantage of this promotion.

From the program FAQs...

"If I have a valid multi-day ticket or Annual Pass or Passport , is there anything else that I can receive?

Guests who present a valid multi-day ticket or Annual Pass or Passport may choose from one of the following three options instead of receiving the free 1-day, 1-park ticket:

◦Disney's Special FASTPASS® cards for certain attractions for you and up to 5 additional members of your party.†
◦A collectible Ear Hat figurine with exclusive trading pins‡
◦Donate your free ticket to a non-profit organization designated by Disney Parks. "

I'd like to bundle up all this negative energy I've seen today and use it to hammer nails at a Habitat for Humanity worksite!!!
