Never received tax form, what to do?

I am missing a 1099 from a large reputable financial company. I called them on February 1st and after being transferred around to several people, they determined that the form never even got generated in their system for some reason. They assured me they would get right on it. One week later I called again because I never heard from them and didn't receive it. I thought this would be a huge rush considering aren't they out of compliance with the government? They assured me they are working on it. It's been another 2 week's and I've gotten no phone call and no 1099. What can I do? I needed to do my taxes as soon as possible because we are going to owe and I need to know how much so I can plan for it. April is a tough month because of lot's of family birthday's and we have to get tags for 5 cars and then the taxes we will owe. I can't believe this is even remotely ok that it is February 21st and this form is no where in sight and when I call they just keep telling me they are working on it.

They should be able to verbally tell you the numbers that should have been on the 1099 form so that you can start figuring your taxes (at least approximately) and plan for what you may owe. Honestly you have lots of time before you actually have to file, so it's probably not worth stressing over yet. That said, I would probably notify the company in writing that I have not yet gotten the form. I would also be googling or looking on the it's website about what to do about a missing 1099.

Yes, I am sure. I have been doing our taxes for years. They also confirmed it when I called and they said "oh yes, it didn't generate for some reason....we will have to get XYZ department to work on it."

Thanks, I'll try that. I'm just annoyed because I need to plan ahead... it's probably going to be a few thousand that we owe. Add that to $350 in tags for the car along with $1000 to fill the propane tank and it's a pretty expensive month. I always do our taxes right away whether I owe or not, just so there are no surprises come April 15th.

Sorry, I was just asking because I have rec'd calls before for someone looking for a 1099 and nothing happened on the account to trigger a 1099.
My apologies.

Good luck! I hope your form comes soon.

I'm waiting on mine for one of our investments also. Maybe it's the same large firm?

They have been late the past 2 years. It's all I'm waiting on too and I get more annoyed every year.

If you know the amount of money your received, you can always plug that number in your return just to get an idea of what your taxes will be. If this involves a mutual fund, I've seen where sometimes they don't have all the numbers available right away and I think it has to do with determining the amount of capital gain distributions. Can the financial company you deal with give you an amount over the phone when you call?

The deadlines have changed for 1099's from financial companies...they do not have a Jan 31 deadline. They have to get it out by the end of February so they are not 'late'. The fact that someone said it hadn't been generated yet doesn't necessarily mean they never printed it...just that they haven't printed it 'yet'.

Many financial services firms will make them available on-line around mid-February...Fidelity did that and ours is now accessible for our taxes. We do not have the hard copy yet though; I don't expect that until next week.

I just received a combined forms 1099. The thing is that historically these institutions have had to send corrected forms for various reasons, and they have until mid-March or later to send those. We were advised by a financial planner not to file our income taxes before then.

I use Turbotax software so I have other numbers plugged into it. I have a really good idea what the end results will be. If you think you will owe several thousand dollars, go ahead and pay it now to avoid some of the penalties and interest.

I have a 1099 that comes much later than any of my other tax documents every year. I've finally figured out they post the tax documents on my online account much earlier than I receive the form in the mail. It is a .pdf file, so I can just print it from the computer. Maybe that is an option for you?

I believe the deadline for brokerage tax statements was pushed out to February 26, for this year. I'm waiting patiently, hoping that our brokerage will be on time.

Just agreeing that I called about our 1099s from our investment accounts and was told they won't be mailed until the end of February this year.

That said, I have all other information input in Turbo Tax, along with an estimate of the 1099s based on our year end statement. That gives me an estimate of what our tax situation is.

It's ok. I don't always know what I'm talking about for sure.:lmao:
Just wanted to let you know I wasn't being mean. You can't really tell while reading my words.

As was suggested earlier, a "large financial firm" might have the info available on-line. I have one statement that lags everyone else by weeks, and I checked this past weekend and the statement was available on-line even though I have yet to receive a hard copy. If you don't have access, they should and can read you the info over the phone.

I feel better knowing they changed the date. I guess I could try to plug in the numbers.
The part that still has me wondering is in all my phone calls to them...they couldn't even find the account that I closed out. There was alot of confusion and putting me on hold and telling me that something should have at least generated and they would have to manually do a form and yada yada. Definitely got me worried.

I asked for the info over the phone, they couldn't even find the account until much research and I just closed it out in October. They told me at first there was no acoount of which I was speaking. After much research and info from me they acknowledged the account and said a form should have at least generated. Nothing was there so there was no info they could offer over the phone.
Thanks for all the replies. I am usually pretty patient, I guess I need to work on it.;)

Well I hope you had a gain or income from that account they can no longer find, as if they never find it, they won't be generating a statement for the IRS and you'll actually come out ahead! Other than your conscience that is!!!
