We are redoing our kitchen, and I never imagined it would be this difficult! I thought choosing cabinets was tough - I am definitely going with a darker wood. Tile shopping has been a nightmare! There are way too many choices, too many different lighting issues :scared1: I love the look of dark, yet I think the contrast of a lighter floor against the dark wood will be pretty. Definitely want porcelin b/c I hear they are durable and we've got 3 kids and a dog. Does anyone have input? Should I opt for lighter floor, or more dramatic and go darker. There is decent light in the room. No clue about color countertops or wall - kinda winging it as I go :thumbsup2 I'm leaning towards browns, beiges, etc. Don't love greys. Anyone have any advice or pics of their kitchen that they love?

I have recently fallen in love with glass tiles, but I have no where to put them. :(

Have you considered glass tiles instead? :goodvibes

I think if I was having darker cabinents, I'd go with a darker wood floor, but that's just personal preference. :)

Thanks - don't think I'd be into glass tiles, and I definitely want to do tile vs. hardwood. It's so hard! :lmao:

The good tile places (not big box) usually have a designer or two on staff that can help you pull together the colors in the room. I'd definitely make use of their services! When spending a lot of money not to mention the effort, a designer is invaluable.

Sorry, I totally misunderstood what you were asking. I thought you were referring to a backsplash, not tiles for the floor. DOH!!

When you select your tile, make sure you look at the grout colors too.
I chose a porcelain tile that has a kind of slate-y appearance (primarily grey and grey-blue with a peachy beige swirl), and a pale grey grout. The grout goes well with our countertops and cupboard/drawer handles.

Whatever you do, make sure you don't go TOO light on the floors! Trust me on this!! We have off white tile in our foyer/kitchen (existing when we bought the house) and I cannot wait until the day I can jackhammer this stuff up. I cannot keep up with it. Every single speck of dirt shows, it's awful, awful, awful! Something more tan/sand color and with lots of variation of color would be best.

Something like these:

Also, FYI, you can get porcelain tile that LOOKS like wood! LOL

Oh, and I also love this one:

And two other things. Try to choose something with some texture on it, otherwise it will get crazy slippery when it's damp/wet. And also, consider larger 12 x 12 tiles...they will make the room look larger, especially if installed on the diagonal.

Personally, my biggest concern when looking for floor tile was to get something that wasn't too slippery when wet. It's amazing how often something liquid ends up on the kitchen floor!

I love that, it's very similar to the ones I posted above. And I can't tell without feeling it but it looks like it's got texture. I think it's a good choice if you're having darker cabinets.

Did you choose counter top? Will this tile go nicely with that?

And also I wanted to say 'Hi neighbor across the water'! I'm in CT, near the coast and I can just about see Long Island from my bedroom window on a clear day!
