Never challenge a DISer to find a deal--a Nov/Dec PTR 11/26: Today's the day!!!

Chapter 4: I thought this was a Nov/Dec trip to CR??

Yes, I know... I ended the last section with an October plan at Wilderness Lodge.

Here's how we got from there to here... it requires a bit of back story...

Almost 3 years ago, we lived in Michigan. I have been htere my entire life and DH has been there for almost all of his. All of our families were there. It was a very difficult decision for us to make the jump to Cincinnati, leaving all of our family behind. It was a great career move for DH and it honestly it has been very good for our family. We are much tighter now and have worked harder to make ourselves part of our community here, all good things. The biggest drawback -- the family in Michigan. While everyone does live in Michigan, they are not close together. There are about 70 miles between my family and DH's mom and her relatives. There's a little over 200 miles from either of them and my father-in-law. Once we cross the state line, people pretty much expect us to zig-zag across the state making sure we see everyone. I have 3 siblings and DH's extended family is quite close. It's not uncommon for us to try to fit in 5 or 6 "gatherings" in a 72 hour visit to the state.

It was while orchestrating our trip to Michigan for Easter that I had a meltdown. Brother #1 was only free this day and brother #3, that day. MIL could only do X and her sister could only do Y. As our heads were about to explode, I said to Ryan ... this just makes me want to go away for Thanksgiving. He looked surprised because Thanksgiving is totally my favorite holiday with my family. We often discuss the "what if we just stayed here?" scenario, but in the end we cave and travel feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. This time though, I was serious. I pointed out that the weekend after Thanksgiving is value season, while our trip was planned during regular season. I also said that everything is decorated for the holidays, which is something I always wanted to see. Plus, we do not need to leave until after Thanksgiving, so there was still an option for people to travel to us. Once he realized that I was indeed serious he encouraged me to call.

When I got the CM on the phone, I had quote me just what we had: a bunk bed woods view room at the Wilderness Lodge. It was a savings f over $400. Just for kicks I had her check pricing and availability at CR. There were garden wing rooms open!!! AND, I was able to get into one and still save $100 over the October quote, bringing me well under budget. With that, I was sold!

We are officially booked Nov. 28-Dec. 5 at the Contemporary in a Garden Wing Garden View room!

Up next ADRs. I need some SERIOUS help!

:thumbsup2 We went to Disney Thanksgiving 2008 and loved it! You will have a blast. Everything is decorated so beautiful.

We try to keep Thanksgiving as our holiday and we stay at home. Our plan had been to go back to Disney this Thanksgiving but changed to try the 4th of July at the World.

I look forward to hearing about your ADR's.

Erika

I'm joining in for the fun!

I love any trip where resorts are changed as I do that way tooooooooo often!

Plus, I see we are neighbors! I live in southern Ohio about 30 minutes from the east side of Cincinnati.

I can't wait to read all about your plans!

Erika

:welcome: Erika! I have changed resorts every time we have gone to Disney. I guess I have Disney resort-itis. I just can't leave well enough alone. ;)

How cool about being neighbors! There seem to be a lot of DISers from our part of Ohio. We are new to the area, but really do love it!!

Chapter 5 - ADRs

This will be a tad rambly (yes, I just invented that word!) so bear with me. My 180 mark is Tuesday, June 1. That's like 6 days away!! I have no no clear park plan and no ADR vision. I am never this sloppy about things.

Here are some things I know for sure:
  • We'll do 2 days at MK
  • 1 day at Epcot
  • 1 day at DHS
  • 1 day at AK
  • 1 off day
  • 1 more day repeating another park :confused3
  • I want to see Spectro, Wishes, and the Christmas lights on the castle but I do not want to go to MVMCP (I've heard we can see this on party nights before it starts?)
  • DH wants to see Illluminations
  • We want to do the Obsorne lights, but do not plan to do Fantasmic
  • We have to have a meal at Crystal Palace, it's been a tradition for us!
  • We are pretty sure that we don't want a TS at Epcot, we've done LeCellier, Coral Reef, and Teppen Edo and would rather do multiple counter services this time.
  • We do not have park hoppers.
  • Since we are driving, we will have a car.

Some places we have talked about trying or have loved eating:
Crystal Palace: As I said above this is a given. We've done every meal of the day there and I think I am leaning towards having lunch there this time. Last year we had a 1:00 lunch it was really a perfect time!

Chef Mickey's: Yes it's loud and we found the dinner food to be meh. BUT -- the kids want to eat with Mickey of course and it's at our hotel! We could have the average dinner again or maybe go for breakfast this time?

The Wave: Everyone seems to love it there AND it's in our hotel. Two big pluses. Not sure if my crazy crew is right for it this trip though.

Whispering Canyon Cafe:
We ate there during our first trip and were really wowed until my son caught the stomach bug at the table. OK, honestly we were impressed even after that because they got things cleaned up and got us out of there as fast as they could. The last time we were there, the boys were really too young to "get" it but now I think they'd love it.

Kona Cafe: Tuna Oscar and Sticky wings.... mmmm ::drools down side of face:: (probably another definite!)

O'hana's: We've tried for/had this dinner ADR 2 or 3 times. Every time something has come up that has made us cancel. DH was loving the huge skewers of meat. Most recently though he has said he's over it. :confused3

Kouzzina: I love Kat Kora and I love Greek food. Need I say more? DH was not blown away by the menu.

Hoop Dee Doo: My boys love slapstick and the menu looks like fun. HDDR seems like an excellent way to spend an off park day. But, then there's Aileen. How would a 16 month old do at a show that long?

Yak & Yeti:
That menu looks great! Whenever I look at food porn the food jumps out. It would be a great way to break up an AK day. Then again, we've done earlier days at AK and had a TS meal at the resort.

50's Prime Time Cafe: Fried Chicken, milkshakes and tasty desserts - sign me up! But, would the boys be overwhelmed by the staff? Also, does the food weigh out not having a fun waiter/waitress?

Sci Fi: I want to eat there, but it seems like we'd be missing out since there's no way we could eat at a car this time. Plus, I am not sure if I really am into the menu.

Liberty Tree Tavern: Another places I always like food porn from, well at lunch anyhow. But is that enough?

Lastly, Tony's Town Square: I am half Italian. I love Italian food. We've tried Tutto and liked it well enough. I was thinking it might be fun to do this as well.

As you can see this is a CRAZY long list. We need to cut it down somehow. Thoughts/opinions on this list? Is there a favorite of yours that I have left off??

HELP!!

So what do you want... how many ADRs are you planning?

I secretly want you to do Hoop Dee Doo, because I would love to try that next summer. I wonder too about Luke. I too for sure say Chef Mickey's. It would be hard to stay at the Contemporary and not eat there. I probably would go for the breakfast too, since you are there or do the O'hana's breakfast. That is just my favorite meal character wise.

As for Yak and Yeti... the parade at AK is awesome, so maybe a meal there would get you all to last that long, and if so I would consider it....

Not sure that I helped!

Hey, did you tell me you had a pre-trip report going?

It's so good to see those three great little Mops getting ready to go to Disney World. With Aileen in the picture now, you'll probably pay a little more attention to Princess and girly things. :cutie: This trip will be new and different and better than ever.

I'm going back to read all the details now. :thumbsup2

agree..food is eh, characters are awesome!

The Wave: Everyone seems to love it there AND it's in our hotel. Two big pluses. Not sure if my crazy crew is right for it this trip though.

Have not eaten there

Whispering Canyon Cafe:
We ate there during our first trip and were really wowed until my son caught the stomach bug at the table. OK, honestly we were impressed even after that because they got things cleaned up and got us out of there as fast as they could. The last time we were there, the boys were really too young to "get" it but now I think they'd love it.

I think it would be a great place for the boys!!! The milkshakes are great! We usually go for breakfast but dinner is good too and will fill you up!

Kona Cafe: Tuna Oscar and Sticky wings.... mmmm ::drools down side of face:: (probably another definite!)

I would vote for that!

O'hana's: We've tried for/had this dinner ADR 2 or 3 times. Every time something has come up that has made us cancel. DH was loving the huge skewers of meat. Most recently though he has said he's over it. :confused3

I've been there 5x in the last 2 years and the service has been horrible all 5 times (breakfast and dinner). I won't go back which is a shame because the food is good!

Kouzzina: I love Kat Kora and I love Greek food. Need I say more? DH was not blown away by the menu.

Never been there!

Hoop Dee Doo: My boys love slapstick and the menu looks like fun. HDDR seems like an excellent way to spend an off park day. But, then there's Aileen. How would a 16 month old do at a show that long?

I wasn't blown away with this--the food or the show. I thought for the price point, the Luau was much better and well worth it.

Yak & Yeti:
That menu looks great! Whenever I look at food porn the food jumps out. It would be a great way to break up an AK day. Then again, we've done earlier days at AK and had a TS meal at the resort.

WONDERFUL FOOD!!!!! When we went, we did the rides, had a lunch at 12:30 and then left to go back to the resort after lunch.

50's Prime Time Cafe: Fried Chicken, milkshakes and tasty desserts - sign me up! But, would the boys be overwhelmed by the staff? Also, does the food weigh out not having a fun waiter/waitress?

Our server was awesome in March. If you want, I can get you her name and if she's there you could request her! I enjoy the food but my dad still thinks it compares to Cracker Barrel and CB is way cheaper.

Sci Fi: I want to eat there, but it seems like we'd be missing out since there's no way we could eat at a car this time. Plus, I am not sure if I really am into the menu.

You can be in a car but it won't be the one with the seats, it will be a table with chairs so I'm not sure how your feeling is about that. I think the Lunch menu is more "adult kid friendly" than dinner.

Liberty Tree Tavern: Another places I always like food porn from, well at lunch anyhow. But is that enough?

I've been for dinner but there are no characters anymore. I'm not sure the food was that great that I'd go without characters.

Lastly, Tony's Town Square: I am half Italian. I love Italian food. We've tried Tutto and liked it well enough. I was thinking it might be fun to do this as well.

HORRIBLE. Go to Mama Melrose IMO.

As you can see this is a CRAZY long list. We need to cut it down somehow. Thoughts/opinions on this list? Is there a favorite of yours that I have left off??

HELP!!

Those are my opinions. Some of my other favorites are: Captains Grille at YC, Chefs De France was amazing, as was Mama Melrose but I mentioned that above :)

I can't wait to see what you end up with!!!!

...side note: The move is going well. Our close in PA is tomorrow and the close in OH is Fri at 3. Our movers won't be here till Tues because of the holiday weekend and our sellers have until end of day Sat to be out so we're kinda stuck but we'll be able to move in my bedroom stuff from the apt and have that set up at least before the truck with everything else arrives Tues. We are going to a Reds game on Sat and maybe Kings Island at some point since we have gold passes.

We've got 7 credits to use up. So, if we do HDDR that makes 6 meals and if we not, then we've got the full 7. I was thinking of Y&Y and the parade, especially since we will be there for Jingle Jungle. Every time I see the pictures of either parade, I know we need to get there and SOON!

Hey, did you tell me you had a pre-trip report going?

I'm going back to read all the details now. :thumbsup2

I started the pretrip last week, but wasn't really "going" yet, so I kept it on the downlow. Now that I've put in more meat, I am open for business. :lmao:

Yes, I am looking forward to throwing in a few princess things and being able to jump a level in rides for Doug and Liam. This will be a super fun trip I am sure!!

Those are my opinions. Some of my other favorites are: Captains Grille at YC, Chefs De France was amazing, as was Mama Melrose but I mentioned that above :)

Aren't Captain's Grille and Chefs signature restaurants? The idea of having my kids at longish nicer meals worries me. I am afraid they'd get too antsy and I would not be able to enjoy my meal. So you like Mama's huh? Going to Mama's would mean giving up 50s/SciFi... I'll have to think on that one.

Glad to hear the move is going well! I remember feeling homeless like that in between our condo and our house. It was nuts! It sounds like you have a great weekend ahead of you and perfect weather to enjoy your new city! Is your brother moving here too?

Captains Grille and Chefs are 1 credit each. At YC, Yachtsmen Steakhouse is 2 credits and at France, The Bistro is 2 so the others are 1 credit each. There were kids at both places every time I've gone. Captains Grill is a little more relaxed than Chefs and they have some great steak and salmon! Chefs has a little more "fancy food."

MM over 50s, ..I don't know that one lol!!!!!

DH and I ate here for the first time during our first anniversary trip. They decorated the table for us. We loved it!

Chef Mickey's: Yes it's loud and we found the dinner food to be meh. BUT -- the kids want to eat with Mickey of course and it's at our hotel! We could have the average dinner again or maybe go for breakfast this time?

I think going for breakfast is a great idea. Maybe on an MK day you could eat an early breakfast there and then just hop on the monorail and get an early day at the park in too!

The Wave: Everyone seems to love it there AND it's in our hotel. Two big pluses. Not sure if my crazy crew is right for it this trip though.

I've never tried The Wave but I've heard good things about it. If you decide to do it let me know how you like it!

Never been, but it looks like a lot of fun!

Kona Cafe: Tuna Oscar and Sticky wings.... mmmm ::drools down side of face:: (probably another definite!)

I've never been here either (sorry, I'm not much help! :rotfl: But it sounds AMAZING!

O'hana's: We've tried for/had this dinner ADR 2 or 3 times. Every time something has come up that has made us cancel. DH was loving the huge skewers of meat. Most recently though he has said he's over it. :confused3

As a big fan of Lilo and Stitch, I say GO FOR IT!

Kouzzina: I love Kat Kora and I love Greek food. Need I say more? DH was not blown away by the menu.

Maybe you could compromise with DH. You have this one night and let him pick another night!

Hoop Dee Doo: My boys love slapstick and the menu looks like fun. HDDR seems like an excellent way to spend an off park day. But, then there's Aileen. How would a 16 month old do at a show that long?

I think if you went to an earlier show then she would probably do okay!

Yak & Yeti:
That menu looks great! Whenever I look at food porn the food jumps out. It would be a great way to break up an AK day. Then again, we've done earlier days at AK and had a TS meal at the resort.

Yummy...I'm drooling just thinking about Y&Y...

50's Prime Time Cafe: Fried Chicken, milkshakes and tasty desserts - sign me up! But, would the boys be overwhelmed by the staff? Also, does the food weigh out not having a fun waiter/waitress?

I love this place! I think the food was some of the best we've had. And I think the food/decor combo would weigh out the waiter/waitress for sure!

Sci Fi: I want to eat there, but it seems like we'd be missing out since there's no way we could eat at a car this time. Plus, I am not sure if I really am into the menu.

IMO, if you can't eat in the car it's not really worth it. But that's just me!

Liberty Tree Tavern: Another places I always like food porn from, well at lunch anyhow. But is that enough?

I've never been here, but I'm the same as you. Loving that food porn!

Lastly, Tony's Town Square: I am half Italian. I love Italian food. We've tried Tutto and liked it well enough. I was thinking it might be fun to do this as well.

We LOVE Tony's!! Definitely go for it! The food is great and the decor is lovely!

As you can see this is a CRAZY long list. We need to cut it down somehow. Thoughts/opinions on this list? Is there a favorite of yours that I have left off??

HELP!!

I added my two cents in purple. Hope it helps! :)

I am jumping onboard...

Looks like we will be there at the same time...

He hubby and I are leaving the kids home and going for my 30th birthday! :scared1:

We are staying at WL from Nov. 28th to Dec. 7th

Looking forward to reading more!!

I'm reading along too. Oregonmommyof2 (Toni) told me you were going to be there during our dates. We are going to be there Nov. 28 - Dec. 10. Your kids are adorable!! I can't wait to read more.

Crystal Palace: As I said above this is a given. We've done every meal of the day there and I think I am leaning towards having lunch there this time. Last year we had a 1:00 lunch it was really a perfect time!

You have your mind made up on this one :thumbsup2.

Chef Mickey's: Yes it's loud and we found the dinner food to be meh. BUT -- the kids want to eat with Mickey of course and it's at our hotel! We could have the average dinner again or maybe go for breakfast this time?

I think it is great going here because it is at your hotel and you don't have to stand in line to meet Mickey and friends. Breakfast is a good idea because you are right there.

The Wave: Everyone seems to love it there AND it's in our hotel. Two big pluses. Not sure if my crazy crew is right for it this trip though.

I have never eaten there and have no desire to, I don't know if the kids would like it, seems a bit on the boring side to me :rotfl:.

Kids seem to have a great time here. We are going for breakfast and dinner on our trip since we are staying there for part of our trip.

Kona Cafe: Tuna Oscar and Sticky wings.... mmmm ::drools down side of face:: (probably another definite!)

Never eaten here but seems like you enjoy it!

O'hana's: We've tried for/had this dinner ADR 2 or 3 times. Every time something has come up that has made us cancel. DH was loving the huge skewers of meat. Most recently though he has said he's over it. :confused3

We love 'Ohana, we like to get an ADR around fireworks time to see it from our table.

Kouzzina: I love Kat Kora and I love Greek food. Need I say more? DH was not blown away by the menu.

Never eaten here either but people seem to like it.

Hoop Dee Doo: My boys love slapstick and the menu looks like fun. HDDR seems like an excellent way to spend an off park day. But, then there's Aileen. How would a 16 month old do at a show that long?

You are right about the show possibly being too long for Aileen, that is a long time to sit still for a little one.

Yak & Yeti:
That menu looks great! Whenever I look at food porn the food jumps out. It would be a great way to break up an AK day. Then again, we've done earlier days at AK and had a TS meal at the resort.

We are trying this for the first time this trip.

50's Prime Time Cafe: Fried Chicken, milkshakes and tasty desserts - sign me up! But, would the boys be overwhelmed by the staff? Also, does the food weigh out not having a fun waiter/waitress?

We have always loved the food an if you think the boys will be overwhelmed let the server know to keep it toned down they don't mind.

Sci Fi: I want to eat there, but it seems like we'd be missing out since there's no way we could eat at a car this time. Plus, I am not sure if I really am into the menu.

I have no desire to go into this restaurant. It has no appeal to me and my friends have said meh and blah when referring to it.

Liberty Tree Tavern: Another places I always like food porn from, well at lunch anyhow. But is that enough?

I have never been to lunch here, so I can't tell you anything.

Lastly, Tony's Town Square: I am half Italian. I love Italian food. We've tried Tutto and liked it well enough. I was thinking it might be fun to do this as well.

If you are looking for authentic Italian food or going to compare it to Tutto I think you will be disappointed. It is a pretty restaurant serving americanized italian food.

I can comment on a few of the restaurants. Unfortunately, a lot you have will be a first for us in July.

Chef Mickey's-We have had breakfast there twice. It is your basic breakfast fare but a fun way to start the day. The characters are great!

O'hana's-We have never had dinner here but Love  breakfast. It is one of the best on property in my opinion. The characters are Mickey, Pluto, Lilo and Stitch. The guava juice is out of this world.

Liberty Tree Taverm-We have done dinner here twice-once with characters and once when they were no more. Once again, we love  it. However, I like home cooked food and love turkey and dressing. The only reason we are not doing the July trip is I think I would be miserable eating there and walking around in the heat afterwards! I am always stuffed when we leave.

You didn't mention whether or not your were doing the Candlelight processional. It is amazing at Epcot. We did it when we went in November 2008. You can get a CP package at some of the restaurants in Epcot that will allow you a show time. You will have to wait in line but it is a lot smaller line than those without the CP package and you are guaranteed a seat. We ate at Garden Grill (another favorite and the Characters are great!) and it was only one Table Credit.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Mop! (Margaret) :wave2:

I'm so very glad you've decided to write a PTR and also happy you let me know about it! I've had so little time to DIS lately... I'm afraid I'm getting terribly behind with everyone.

How exciting that you will get to stay at a Deluxe Resort and still save money! And you cannot beat WDW all decorated for the Holidays!

Sounds like a fantastic trip is in the works!

My 180 mark is Tuesday, June 1.

Me too! I've already told my co-workers I'll be late coming in that morning.

Some places we have talked about trying or have loved eating:
Crystal Palace: As I said above this is a given. We've done every meal of the day there and I think I am leaning towards having lunch there this time. Last year we had a 1:00 lunch it was really a perfect time!

I love Crystal Palace. That'll be a nice break in the middle of the day.

Chef Mickey's: Yes it's loud and we found the dinner food to be meh. BUT -- the kids want to eat with Mickey of course and it's at our hotel! We could have the average dinner again or maybe go for breakfast this time?

My family prefers the dinner, but I think a breakfast would be great for you to try.... you can't beat that it's right there!

The Wave: Everyone seems to love it there AND it's in our hotel. Two big pluses. Not sure if my crazy crew is right for it this trip though.

I've never been but always heard great stuff about it... but yes, I've heard the feel of the place isn't really for kids.

Whispering Canyon Cafe: We ate there during our first trip and were really wowed until my son caught the stomach bug at the table. OK, honestly we were impressed even after that because they got things cleaned up and got us out of there as fast as they could. The last time we were there, the boys were really too young to "get" it but now I think they'd love it.

Totally go for this one!

Kona Cafe: Tuna Oscar and Sticky wings.... mmmm ::drools down side of face:: (probably another definite!)

This one's on our list!!

O'hana's: We've tried for/had this dinner ADR 2 or 3 times. Every time something has come up that has made us cancel. DH was loving the huge skewers of meat. Most recently though he has said he's over it. :confused3

I've only done breakfast here and it's my family's absolute favorite. Lots of fun!

Kouzzina: I love Kat Kora and I love Greek food. Need I say more? DH was not blown away by the menu.

We're Greek so this for us was a given to try, and my excuse to get to the Boardwalk area.

Hoop Dee Doo: My boys love slapstick and the menu looks like fun. HDDR seems like an excellent way to spend an off park day. But, then there's Aileen. How would a 16 month old do at a show that long?

I'm no help on this one... :rotfl:

Yak & Yeti: That menu looks great! Whenever I look at food porn the food jumps out. It would be a great way to break up an AK day. Then again, we've done earlier days at AK and had a TS meal at the resort.

I've heard great things about this one too..... if you want to do an AK night this would be good for maybe a late lunch.

50's Prime Time Cafe: Fried Chicken, milkshakes and tasty desserts - sign me up! But, would the boys be overwhelmed by the staff? Also, does the food weigh out not having a fun waiter/waitress?

I've never been but I have heard the food is pretty good.....

Sci Fi: I want to eat there, but it seems like we'd be missing out since there's no way we could eat at a car this time. Plus, I am not sure if I really am into the menu.

We enjoyed eating here but we were in separate cars across from one another so it wasn't as fun.

Liberty Tree Tavern: Another places I always like food porn from, well at lunch anyhow. But is that enough?

Again no help, sorry, I've never been.

Lastly, Tony's Town Square: I am half Italian. I love Italian food. We've tried Tutto and liked it well enough. I was thinking it might be fun to do this as well.

I always hear mixed reviews on this and I considered it for our trip but ended up quickly ruling it out. There were just too many other good places I really wanted to try.

You've listed pretty much everything I've thought about for our trip too. Other suggestions..... Cape May or Tusker House breakfast? 1900 Park Fare dinner?

That is so funny! I just posted pretty much this exact ADR post. Let me tell you what we love out of your list: WCC is awesome!! You can find my review in my TR. Just so comfy and wonderful food! Lots of fun for the kids, too!

Ohana is a must do for us. The sights, smells, Poly, drinks....:cloud9:

We ate the family style lunch at LTT and fell in love. The food was SO good! Especially the salad and butter/bread. Not sure if it is still family style, but it was so wonderful. We talked about the food all day. Again, pics and my review is in my TR link.

We are going back to all of these places in December as well. I hear that Crystal Palace is awesome as well. Can't wait to see what you pick :thumbsup2

Ok..I went to look. LTT is still family style for dinner  Here is what is on the menu in case you didn't know..ohhhh soooo yum!

I'm joining in!

Your kids are adorable. :cutie:

I'm going to weigh in on a few of your potential ADRs.

Yak N' Yeti - I wasn't really sold on that meal but I went in January and it was sooooo good. Really excellent food. I find it hard for myself to stay in AK past lunchtime and Yak N' Yeti provided the perfect break for me to stay until later in the afternoon.

Liberty Tree Tavern - The food at dinner is excellent. I really love the atmosphere in there as well. I'm trying it for lunch in September. I've heard very good things about their lunch menu so I'm excited to try it.

We will be at WL Dec4 - Dec 11. We have been looking at what ADR's we want too. We are thinkin gbreakfast at CP, we had lunch there last time. We ate at Scf-Fi last time and I think this year we are just going to try and make it on snacks the HS day as we just aren't blown away with any of the choices. WCC is a possibility on the list did you eat breakfast or dinner there.

We did MVMCP last time and are NOT doing it tis time. We just thought it way too crowded.

Following along as you plan your trip.
