Never challenge a DISer to find a deal--a Nov/Dec PTR 11/26: Today's the day!!!

Chapter 5 - ADRs

This will be a tad rambly (yes, I just invented that word!) so bear with me. My 180 mark is Tuesday, June 1. That's like 6 days away!! I have no no clear park plan and no ADR vision. I am never this sloppy about things.

Here are some things I know for sure:
  • We'll do 2 days at MK
  • 1 day at Epcot
  • 1 day at DHS
  • 1 day at AK
  • 1 off day
  • 1 more day repeating another park :confused3
  • I want to see Spectro, Wishes, and the Christmas lights on the castle but I do not want to go to MVMCP (I've heard we can see this on party nights before it starts?)
  • DH wants to see Illluminations
  • We want to do the Obsorne lights, but do not plan to do Fantasmic
  • We have to have a meal at Crystal Palace, it's been a tradition for us!
  • We are pretty sure that we don't want a TS at Epcot, we've done LeCellier, Coral Reef, and Teppen Edo and would rather do multiple counter services this time.
  • We do not have park hoppers.
  • Since we are driving, we will have a car.

Some places we have talked about trying or have loved eating:
Crystal Palace: As I said above this is a given. We've done every meal of the day there and I think I am leaning towards having lunch there this time. Last year we had a 1:00 lunch it was really a perfect time!

Chef Mickey's: Yes it's loud and we found the dinner food to be meh. BUT -- the kids want to eat with Mickey of course and it's at our hotel! We could have the average dinner again or maybe go for breakfast this time?

Whispering Canyon Cafe:
We ate there during our first trip and were really wowed until my son caught the stomach bug at the table. OK, honestly we were impressed even after that because they got things cleaned up and got us out of there as fast as they could. The last time we were there, the boys were really too young to "get" it but now I think they'd love it.

50's Prime Time Cafe: Fried Chicken, milkshakes and tasty desserts - sign me up! But, would the boys be overwhelmed by the staff? Also, does the food weigh out not having a fun waiter/waitress?

Sci Fi: I want to eat there, but it seems like we'd be missing out since there's no way we could eat at a car this time. Plus, I am not sure if I really am into the menu.

Lastly, Tony's Town Square: I am half Italian. I love Italian food. We've tried Tutto and liked it well enough. I was thinking it might be fun to do this as well.

As you can see this is a CRAZY long list. We need to cut it down somehow. Thoughts/opinions on this list? Is there a favorite of yours that I have left off??

HELP!!

Just seeing your trip report and getting in right under the ADR deadline. We love Crystal Palace, as well. I would definitely go for Chef Mickey's breakfast. You could plan it for a later breakfast on your off day. We love WCC and had an awesome waiter last time. His name was Rafael and if you go you should totally ask if he is there he was awesome with Brooklynn. I would choose Sci Fi over Prime Time. I really like their cheeseburger and chocolate shake and you can still totally sit in a car. We did on our first trip when Brooklynn was just 11 months old they just pulled her high chair right up next to it with a tray. I really like Tony's and both of my girls are pasta lovers. We had an ADR there one afternoon and then watched the afternoon parade from the balcony. It worked perfectly!

Just my opinions can't wait to hear what you decide.

Captains Grille and Chefs are 1 credit each. At YC, Yachtsmen Steakhouse is 2 credits and at France, The Bistro is 2 so the others are 1 credit each. There were kids at both places every time I've gone. Captains Grill is a little more relaxed than Chefs and they have some great steak and salmon! Chefs has a little more "fancy food."

MM over 50s, ..I don't know that one lol!!!!!

Captain's Grille looks CRAZY good. It has definitely jumped up on both DH's and my list. I am also considering Cape May. Any opinions?

I added my two cents in purple. Hope it helps! :)

It certainly did help! There was plenty there to think about. I am going to post our plan 1.0 in a few.

I am jumping onboard...

Looks like we will be there at the same time...

He hubby and I are leaving the kids home and going for my 30th birthday! :scared1:

We are staying at WL from Nov. 28th to Dec. 7th

Looking forward to reading more!!

How fun to be doing an adults only trip! I dream of something like that. When I turned 30, my hubby took me to Vegas. For his 30th, we invited a bunch of family to a party at a local place. Guess that wasn't very fair. ;) I love the WL and am going to try figuring out a way for us to stay there before Aileen turns 3.

I'm reading along too. Oregonmommyof2 (Toni) told me you were going to be there during our dates. We are going to be there Nov. 28 - Dec. 10. Your kids are adorable!! I can't wait to read more.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! Many of them have helped shape what we are going to do. I still cannot shake Hoop Dee Doo out of my head, but I have a feeling that good sense will be prevail and I will end up canceling. I just hate to give up on it now and change my mind and have no chance of going.

I can comment on a few of the restaurants. Unfortunately, a lot you have will be a first for us in July.

Chef Mickey's-We have had breakfast there twice. It is your basic breakfast fare but a fun way to start the day. The characters are great!

O'hana's-We have never had dinner here but Love  breakfast. It is one of the best on property in my opinion. The characters are Mickey, Pluto, Lilo and Stitch. The guava juice is out of this world.

Liberty Tree Tavern-We have done dinner here twice-once with characters and once when they were no more. Once again, we love  it. However, I like home cooked food and love turkey and dressing. The only reason we are not doing the July trip is I think I would be miserable eating there and walking around in the heat afterwards! I am always stuffed when we leave.

You didn't mention whether or not your were doing the Candlelight processional. It is amazing at Epcot. We did it when we went in November 2008. You can get a CP package at some of the restaurants in Epcot that will allow you a show time. You will have to wait in line but it is a lot smaller line than those without the CP package and you are guaranteed a seat. We ate at Garden Grill (another favorite and the Characters are great!) and it was only one Table Credit.

Hope this helps.

Erika

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I sooo want to see the CP but I am sure Aileen would have none of it. She's a pretty routine oriented baby and bedtime is by 8:00, so I am sure having to keep semiquiet and listening to reading/music would be less than exciting to the people around her. Maybe once she is older I can suggest another December trip to the "world"!

Hi, Mop! (Margaret) :wave2:

I'm so very glad you've decided to write a PTR and also happy you let me know about it! I've had so little time to DIS lately... I'm afraid I'm getting terribly behind with everyone.

How exciting that you will get to stay at a Deluxe Resort and still save money! And you cannot beat WDW all decorated for the Holidays!

Sounds like a fantastic trip is in the works!

Kathy

Thanks for stopping by Kathy! I was really waffling on writing one before I had the suggestion from you. I am thrilled we are getting to stay in a deluxe. This is entering a whole new world and have I have a feeling it will be hard for us to go back to mods!

Me too! I've already told my co-workers I'll be late coming in that morning.

My family prefers the dinner, but I think a breakfast would be great for you to try.... you can't beat that it's right there!

I've never been but always heard great stuff about it... but yes, I've heard the feel of the place isn't really for kids.

Totally go for this one!

This one's on our list!!

I've only done breakfast here and it's my family's absolute favorite. Lots of fun!

We're Greek so this for us was a given to try, and my excuse to get to the Boardwalk area.

I'm no help on this one... :rotfl:

I've heard great things about this one too..... if you want to do an AK night this would be good for maybe a late lunch.

I've never been but I have heard the food is pretty good.....

We enjoyed eating here but we were in separate cars across from one another so it wasn't as fun.

Again no help, sorry, I've never been.

I always hear mixed reviews on this and I considered it for our trip but ended up quickly ruling it out. There were just too many other good places I really wanted to try.

You've listed pretty much everything I've thought about for our trip too. Other suggestions..... Cape May or Tusker House breakfast? 1900 Park Fare dinner?

Thanks for all of your opinions. It's funny how similar the lists end up looking. You can tell what we DISers love! Cape May has actually entered our list. Of course, DH is pushing for dinner there not breakfast. He loves breakfast out, but has a hard time "spending" DDP credits on it. Since I am not a huge breakfast fan, I keep my mouth shut! ;)

That is so funny! I just posted pretty much this exact ADR post. Let me tell you what we love out of your list: WCC is awesome!! You can find my review in my TR. Just so comfy and wonderful food! Lots of fun for the kids, too!

Ohana is a must do for us. The sights, smells, Poly, drinks....:cloud9:

We ate the family style lunch at LTT and fell in love. The food was SO good! Especially the salad and butter/bread. Not sure if it is still family style, but it was so wonderful. We talked about the food all day. Again, pics and my review is in my TR link.

We are going back to all of these places in December as well. I hear that Crystal Palace is awesome as well. Can't wait to see what you pick :thumbsup2

Ok..I went to look. LTT is still family style for dinner  Here is what is on the menu in case you didn't know..ohhhh soooo yum!

DECLARATION SALAD - Tossed Mixed Greens, served with our special Tavern Strawberry Vinaigrette Dressing

PATRIOT'S PLATTER - Roasted turkey breast, carved beef, and smoked pork loin, with mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, herb bread stuffing, and Macaroni and Cheese.

BEVERAGES - Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Orange, Lemonade, Birch Beer; Coffee, Regular or Decaffeinated; Hot Tea; Hot Cocoa; Milk, Whole, Low-fat, Skim or Chocolate; and Nestea Iced Tea.

Rolls and gravy also included.

Thanks for all of the help! We did LTT for dinner back when there were characters there and loved it. It was a great way to ensure the kids are not eating hot dogs and chicken fingers at every meal. Plus, the character interactions were awesome! It's not on my list at this second, but that means nothing! :lmao:

I'm joining in!

Your kids are adorable. :cutie:

I'm going to weigh in on a few of your potential ADRs.

Yak N' Yeti - I wasn't really sold on that meal but I went in January and it was sooooo good. Really excellent food. I find it hard for myself to stay in AK past lunchtime and Yak N' Yeti provided the perfect break for me to stay until later in the afternoon.

Liberty Tree Tavern - The food at dinner is excellent. I really love the atmosphere in there as well. I'm trying it for lunch in September. I've heard very good things about their lunch menu so I'm excited to try it.

Thanks for joining in! Having new readers is so exciting!! I glad to hear your positive Y&Y review. I feel the same way about AK as a whole. I want to like and stay all day, but it never happens. Looking forward to hear about your lunch review of LTT too!

We will be at WL Dec4 - Dec 11. We have been looking at what ADR's we want too. We are thinkin gbreakfast at CP, we had lunch there last time. We ate at Scf-Fi last time and I think this year we are just going to try and make it on snacks the HS day as we just aren't blown away with any of the choices. WCC is a possibility on the list did you eat breakfast or dinner there.

We did MVMCP last time and are NOT doing it tis time. We just thought it way too crowded.

Following along as you plan your trip.

Thanks for joining in! I love having a another December mind in the report. There are so many things to think about and I don't want to miss anything! We did breakfast at CP once and really loved it. The food choices were very good! We did find the characters to be a bit slow and missed rope drop. We did dinner at WCC. One thing I remember, aside from having a sick kid, is that it took a while to get seated. The good news is that they have the Lincoln Log table there to play with while you wait. So fun!

Just seeing your trip report and getting in right under the ADR deadline. We love Crystal Palace, as well. I would definitely go for Chef Mickey's breakfast. Thanks for joining in and sharing your opinions! You've done this a lot with this age so it really helps a lot! I remember reading about Rafael and all the fun you guys had at WCC. It's great when you find a server like that. I was pretty sure I had my ADRs done, but now I am looking at my sheet rethinking a bunch of stuff. ;) I have no idea how I'll know what to reserve tomorrow!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I apologize it's taken me so long to get an update in, especially with ADR day tomorrow. I was having a wonderful weekend hanging out with the family and noticed yesterday morning that Aileen felt warm. I did the usual mom math and said 9 month old + drooling + chewing = teething and we went on with our day. Took the poor girl to get haircuts for the boys and then went to church and out to lunch after as we always do. When she woke up from her nap, I decided to actually take her temp so I knew what I was dealing with. It was 102 under the arm, definitely more than teething. While on ibuprofen she's around 99, but off we are up to 103. My kids rarely are sick and this is like our third fever in 3 kids (we are so blessed!) and of course this is a holiday weekend. I keep waffling on whether we go to urgent care this afternoon or get into the ped's office tomorrow.

Chapter 6: The Plan 1.0

Those of you who were around when I was pregnant with Aileen know that I referred to her as 3.0 before she had a name which was until 24 hours after her birth. Since then, I've always had a love for the "dot oh" craze -- therefore it's making its way into me TR too! And well, I have to keep it real. The list I am going to publish today is really The Plan 3.0. 1.0 would have gotten published yesterday afternoon and 2.0 would have gone up about 10 minutes ago. I just keep changing my mind!

Ok, so after I posted about ADRs, I sat down with my pal Mike (of tourguide mike fame) and worked on my park days list. I've used his info for all of our trips and it has never failed us. I employed his services once again. I then started plugging in ADRs based on your advice and my DH's further opinions.

Here's where we stand at this second:

Sunday 11-28 - Check in at CR fairly early (before 10). Get our KTTW and head over to MK.
Crystal Palace lunch

Monday 11-29 - Epcot day including Illuminations
Food at CS places

Tuesday 11-30 Animal Kingdom
Yak & Yeti lunch

Wednesday 12-1 Magic Kingdom
Tony's for dinner

Thursday 12-2 Off day
Chef Mickey's breakfast and Cape May for dinner

Friday 12-3 Hollywood Studios
50's Prime Time dinner

Saturday 12-4 Epcot (or Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom) depends on who "wins)
Ohana's dinner

Sunday 12-5 Magic Kingdom and then go home :sad2:

Of that list, we have 2.5 repeats (we've done Chef Mickey's at dinner but never at breakfast) and 4 new places. I think that's a good mix.

Some things I am still considering (changes I've made from the first 1.0 and 2.0):
Hoop Dee Doo - I just can't get that place out of my head. Every time I look at photos I think of how much fun that would be. If we did the 5:00 on an off day it would A. get us to Fort Wilderness and b. Let us see the show and still be home before bedtime. I still worry about Aileen going there and also if I do not book it tomorrow I won't be able to get the 5:00.

Captain's Grill - After Megan suggested it, I went to look at the menu. It looks awesome! I think DH and I would really like it. Of course, buffets/family styles are so easy to do with kids.

Kona - I've mentioned my love of Kona all over the Disboards. I really wanted to keep it because of this intense love, but then again I want to try something new! So many decisions!

Liberty Tree Tavern dinner - While I haven't even discussed this one with DH, I do remember finding the meal to be nice and family style food is wonderful with kids. We can just serve up as much food as they want and there is no getting up and down and tag teaming parenting and feeding kids.

I've also wondered about putting CM on the 28th at their last breakfast seating. I thought it would be great to check in and go right up to CM's to start the week with characters and food. If we did that, then I think on the 5th, I'd try for an 8:00 ADR at Crystal Palace. That way, we'd also end the week on a character meal with an early entrance into the park. I love this idea but I think the implementation could be VERY hairy! (trying to get packed up and checked out and still to an 8:00 am ADR).

Please, if you have any further opinions please share! I am seriously overwhelmed by tomorrow!

Too funny. I'm calling my plan V.1.0 too :rotfl: I'm hoping to keep the same itinerary once set, but probably not.

Sunday 11-28 - Check in at CR fairly early (before 10). Get our KTTW and head over to MK.
Crystal Palace lunch

:woohoo: We're at MK this day too! Sadly, it's the only matched up day our entire trips. I've also booked our off day on the Thursday and if MK "wins" on the Saturday, we'll be there too.

Kona - I've mentioned my love of Kona all over the Disboards. I really wanted to keep it because of this intense love, but then again I want to try something new! So many decisions!

My same dilema and I caved to the old favorite.

If your day before leaving is not so busy, can you get the majority of things packed up then? On the other hand, how ready will you all be for an early entrance day at the end of your vacation? I love a relaxed pace so I'd lean towards keeping it the way you have it and just have a nice last MK day.

Please, if you have any further opinions please share! I am seriously overwhelmed by tomorrow!

I hear ya. I'm looking forward to it being done too. I'm afraid what I want won't be available :scared: At least I'm not competing with you! :lmao:

Hey, I'm just joining in, but I've got a few opinions for you-though they might confuse you more! CR sounds great and I agree with your title: NEVER challenge a DISer to find a deal. I just got back from a 12 day vacation with my mom. Our total budget after everything was said and done (and spent): $3176.93 Not bad, if I do say so myself.

Sunday 11-28 - Check in at CR fairly early (before 10). Get our KTTW and head over to MK.
Crystal Palace lunch

I've had breakfast and lunch at CP and really enjoyed both, but I like breakfast better.

Monday 11-29 - Epcot day including Illuminations
Food at CS places

I highly recommend Kringla Bakeri and Sunshine Seasons.

Tuesday 11-30 Animal Kingdom
Yak & Yeti lunch

I agree, the food does look good there, but I've never been there myself.

Wednesday 12-1 Magic Kingdom
Tony's for dinner

Thursday 12-2 Off day
Chef Mickey's breakfast and Cape May for dinner

I had an ADR for Chef Mickey's and canceled it due to budget restrictions. It also got the least amount of votes for which to keep here on the DIS. However, we talked to another family our first day at MK who had breakfast there that morning and said it was one of the best, in regards to the characters at least. I've always wanted to try Cape May for dinner.

Friday 12-3 Hollywood Studios
50's Prime Time dinner

50's was awesome, our favorite meal of the trip. The food was great and our waiter was fun without being mean or over the top.

Saturday 12-4 Epcot (or Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom) depends on who "wins)
Ohana's dinner

We had dinner at Ohana and we found it most enjoyable. The meats were a bit dry but flavorful. We loved the lo mein and potstickers and dressing and bread. Mom really loved the bread pudding. :cloud9:

Sunday 12-5 Magic Kingdom and then go home :sad2:

I think the baby would be fine. It's not like she would have to be quiet the whole time and if it's something the really sticks out to you, why not book it just in case. I know it requires a deposit/payment in full, but as long as you cancel at least 48 hours before, you'll get the refund

Captain's Grill - After Megan suggested it, I went to look at the menu. It looks awesome! I think DH and I would really like it. Of course, buffets/family styles are so easy to do with kids.

Can't speak for dinner, but we had lunch there and it was great!

Good luck with whatever you decide!

I like what you have so far. If you are still really being pulled to Hoop De Doo than you should book it. You can cancel and get a refund if you decide later on that you don't want to go. I'd hate for you to miss out on the 5PM showing if it will work out for your group better than the later ones.

/
If I may chime in.....do do Hoop De Doo! :rotfl: It is an experience overall !!!

Right now there's a glitch in the online ADRs so I was able to do mine today instead of tomorrow and do not have Hoop Dee Doo. I am pondering calling/logging on tomorrow and seeing if it will let me double book myself for the time being. Since we are on the DDP, it won't even cost me anything right?

Hey, I'm just joining in, but I've got a few opinions for you-though they might confuse you more! CR sounds great and I agree with your title: NEVER challenge a DISer to find a deal. You did amazingly well with the budget, I am very impressed! I would love to stay for 12 days but I think anything over 10 would make my hubby's head spin. :lmao:

If I may chime in.....do do Hoop De Doo! :rotfl: It is an experience overall !!!

I just might!!!

I think I would leave Chef Mickey's midweek. In case you have a slow to warm up to character little princess. My girls never were warm day one... it took a while and to see the gang is awfully fun when everyone cooperates!

Looks like yummy eats... book Hoop Dee Doo, you can always cancel!

Good point! The boys have always been pretty comfortable with characters so I didn't even think of this. I think I am going to add Hoop Dee Doo in the AM - right after I get off the phone with the pediatrician. You're right, I can always cancel later! ;)

Well, did you get the 5pm Hoop Dee Doo??

Kathy

I did!!! Thanks for asking Kathy! Aileen woke up having a rough morning so I was rocking and nursing her, calling the pediatrician for an appointment, etc. In my mind, all of the 5:00 time slots were disappearing. Once I got her down for a nap, I logged on and all of the HDDR options were still there! I snagged Category 2 at 5:00!

I'll post all of my complete ADR itinerary in a minute!

:upsidedow Psst! (I was cursed with the last post on the bottom of page three and you missed me!)

Too funny. I'm calling my plan V.1.0 too :rotfl: I'm hoping to keep the same itinerary once set, but probably not.
Great minds think alike!! I am sure my park days are set. They flow well and all, but the ADRs... Well, I'll get to that in a sec!

:woohoo: We're at MK this day too! Sadly, it's the only matched up day our entire trips. I've also booked our off day on the Thursday and if MK "wins" on the Saturday, we'll be there too.

We'll have to be on the lookout for each other!!!

My same dilema and I caved to the old favorite.
Sometimes, you have to cave. This year, I have held strong, so far! :lmao:

I love a relaxed pace so I'd lean towards keeping it the way you have it and just have a nice last MK day.
I waffled a lot on this one, you'll see what I did in a sec!!

I hear ya. I'm looking forward to it being done too. I'm afraid what I want won't be available :scared: At least I'm not competing with you! :lmao:
I was surprised by how much was still open! I was stressing that everything would be gone, but so far it does seem like a very slow travel week!

:upsidedow Psst! (I was cursed with the last post on the bottom of page three and you missed me!)
I am soo sorry! I remember reading that now and with all the chaos of yesterday I missed it in my quoting! :rotfl2: at the curse of the last post of the page!

Chapter 7: ADRs and The Plan 1.5

ADRs are made!!!:cool1::banana: As you know, I was waffling even up until last night about the Hoop Dee Doo thing. I finally made a decision, sort of!!

Here's where things stand at this moment:

Sunday 11-28: Magic Kingdom
Crystal Palace at 1pm
This is a MVMCP night but we are not attending.

Monday 11-29: Epcot
No ADR

Tuesday 11-30: Animal Kingdom
Yak & Yeti at 12:30

Wednesday 12-1: Magic Kingdom
Tony's at 5:15

Thursday 12-2: No park day!!
Chef Mickey's at 8:10 (AM)
Plan A:
Cape May at 5:40
Plan B:
Hoop Dee Doo Revue at 5:00!! :cool1:

No ADRs Time to go home :(

As you can see, we've still got wiggle room in there. I've got up to 48 hours before Hoop Dee Doo to make up my mind. Still not sure which way we'll go!

I think your ADRs look great! I'm glad you booked Hoop De Doo so you'll have that option if you do decide to go. :thumbsup2

Your ADRs look great! Good call on the Hoop Dee Do.... see how your feeling and go with it. From what I've heard of the show, Aileen just might have a jolly ole time dancing along with the music.

We'll have to be on the lookout for each other!!!

Definately!

I was surprised by how much was still open! I was stressing that everything would be gone, but so far it does seem like a very slow travel week!

Here's hoping! My fingers are starting to cramp from keeping them crossed for free dining. :rotfl:

I am soo sorry! I remember reading that now and with all the chaos of yesterday I missed it in my quoting! :rotfl2: at the curse of the last post of the page!

Your ADR's look great! I think Hoop De Doo would be a lot of fun.

So glad you got everything you wanted.
