Never camped before question...

Hi, I have never been camping before and would like to try it sometime in the fall of the year. If I were going tent camping what is everything that I would need to be comfortable and feel at "home"/Sleeping,cooking and lounging?

My camping list (not for Disney, just regular camping--adapt as you will):

Tent (remember: if it says 4 man, it's really 2 man + gear)
Tarp for under tent
Pop up
Folding table
Camp chairs

Sleeping bags
Blankets
Pillows
Air mattress with rechargeable pump OR cots with foam mattress padding
Foam pad squares (those interlocking ones you get for kids--goes on the floor of the tent to protect it from shoes and cots)
Plastic "lawn" welcome mat (outside tent to catch sand and dirt easier)


Lanterns (rechargeable and propane) with hooks to hang on trees
Flashlights/head lamps

Toilitries including anti-bacterial wipes (good when no shower is available)
Sealant spray for tent and pop up
Bleach for sanitizing dishes
Dishsoap on sponges
Clothing/shoes (always bring extra shoes)

Pop up trash cans (easy to store at night--trash should be removed from site to dumpster before bed) [I have two for trash only, and one for dirty clothes inside the tent--after we are all in pjs, I close the bag up on the dirty clothes one and toss it in the big laundry bag--helps keep the "stink" locked away]

Tubs to store food in (mine have the "locking" handles)
Coolers (3--one for meats, one for other food, one for drinks)
Tub to store cookware/tableware in
Camp stove (I have 3 now, 2 small tabletop 2 burners that use small propane bottles, one big stand alone 3 burner stove that uses the big tank)
Charcoal and charcoal chimney (for use with cast iron)

Paper towel holder (wood, stands on end)
Picnic bag (zips, waterproof--keep snacks in there so the kids stay out of the big tubs of food)
Bungie cords (to wrap around food tubs and coolers to keep the animals out)
small hand broom/dustpan (clean out tent)
Tub outside the tent to throw shoes in (keeps shoes out of tent, and animals out of the shoes)

Cookware/tableware:
Tubs to wash dishes in (3, for 3 tub method)
Plastic dishes/cups/dishes--nondisposable (cups from Cub Scouts, dishes/bowls from Walmart or Target)
Cast iron pots and pans/griddle (fits big grill)
Fire forks (to cook over the fire--marshmallows, hot dogs, etc)

Waterproof matches/bbq lighter/flint and steel (yes all 3)
Dryer lint, cotton balls and Vaseline (to start fires)
Clorax or Lysol wipes (to wipe things down with)
Hand soap, tp, paper towels, trash bags

Personal stuff--books, magazines, toys for kids, etc.

I second the air mattress! It just makes for a better night's sleep. Kids are fine in their sleeping bags, but we're just too stiff in the morning if we've slept in the ground.

I also suggest a good sense of humor & a camera (especially if you may be camping with kids), lol

I find having my crock pot and disposable liners makes for easy meals and easy cleanup.

I love having my recumbent trike, too, as it means I can tour all over the campground and never get tired.

If you will be using the comfort stations, it pays to have a shower caddy. I repurposed an empty kitty food jug with a tight fitting lid. it is about 10" x 10" square so I could sit on it if I needed to for foot washing or waiting in line. It holds flip-flops, shower cap, bath gel, scrubby, shampoo/conditioner, tooth paste, tooth brush, floss, mouthwash, razors, etc. When we tent camped, we each had one and parked it under our cot so it was always ready to grab on the way to the bath house.

I like grouping things together in bins. All my kitchen stuff fits in 2 bins and the bedroom stuff (book light, flash lites, fan, heater, linens, door mat, whisk broom and dust pan) in another. I use the empty bin for dirty clothes, which get transfered to a large trash bag for the trip home. The bins fit on shelves at home and are easy to transfer to the vehicle when we camp and back again afterward.

The liners are in the grocery stores on the aisle with tin foil, zip lock bags, and oven bags. I have several boxes in my camping bin and several at home. If there are left overs, I leave them in the bag, twist it shut, clamp a clothes pin on the twist, and after it cools, pop it in the cooler. To reserve, just reverse that process.

Never have been camping before...I recommend you assemble your camping gear and have a "camp backyard" before you make the trek to the Fort to become familiar with how to set up your tent and campsite. This way you also get a feel for what kind of bedding you will need (sleeping bag, cot or air mattress, and pillow), how much room you will have in the tent, etc. Plus, if you have a camp backyard you will have an easier time of setting up your campsite at Fort Wilderness (fewer surprises) because you will already have found any shortcomings during your practice trip.
