My DH has business in Tampa mid July and we may be able to get over to Orlando for a day or two. That's not enough time to do everything, so I thought we might do Universal since neither of us has been there before. But I don't know where to start. The on-site hotels seem outrageously expensive, but I'd really like the FOTL priviledges. We would only need 2 day 2 park passes, but the buy 2 get 3 free seem cheaper anyway. How do I save money on the hotels? Can I get a package, or is it cheaper and easier to do on my own? I don't know where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

There are a few different ways to save.
If you had an annual pass, you could save tons on the hotels (129.00 for the RPR)
There's also possibly AAA rates too.
