I am an east coast girl :) I've been to walt disney world many times and I absolutely love it. But i've always been curious about what the original disneyland was like. I guess my question would be is it just as great as WDW?? Is it worth checking out? I've never been anywhere on the west coast my my boyfriend said we should go to disneyland someday to see what its like.

If you are thinking of coming out, plan carefully. Decide when it is best to see certain areas based on crowds and weather. Also know DLR is getting a lot of work done in DCA and will be much improoved by this Summer.

Make DLR part of a trip.
DLR 3-4 days.
SF 3 days.
Pacific coast 1-2 days.
Hollywood and beaches for a day.
SD 1-2 days.

Also
LV 2-3 days.
Grand Canyon 1-3 days.

If you have not been to California, I recommend you plan a Cali trip that includes Disneyland. Southern California has a lot of great things to see and people to meet, that you may want to get a sampling of many things instead of focusing on one.

That said, you will enjoy Disneyland (and California Adventure) just like any other WDW park. However, the dynamic of the two resorts are significantly different.

At WDW, you can get 100% immersed in the fantasy. DLR is in a neighborhood, and there is evidence of real life all around the parks, so it is tough to escape if that is your goal. I would equate it more to visiting Sea World, Busch Gardens or the Magic Kingdom before Eisner on an immersion scale. This allows you to stay off property and get the same effect, usually for a lot less money.

There are a LOT of locals, so the population and their outlook on things are different than WDW. The crowds ebb and flow based on new attractions, days off, and other daily events. Most of DL and GC's visitors are from the surrounding area, so they can drop in any time, see a few things, and leave. This is much more difficult at WDW, and the citizens of Orlando don't engage as much.

The links SonnyJane provided are excellent and very helpful! I especially like the list of balckout dates for AP holders :rolleyes1.

thanks for the tips and advice. the only thing im worried about is being on the plane for so long lol it takes 2 hours for me to get to orlando and i don't know how much longer i would be able to sit there...

Try being on a plane for a solid 15 hours. Disneyland alone is worth that suffering!

15 hours?? wow!!!
I've been looking at stuff on the disneyland website and I'm beyond confused lol I saw there is no magical express like WDW has. Probably a silly question but how do you get to DLR from the airport then?
lol I'm such a newbie:lmao:

You can find that info out in the links I gave you. People take taxis or shuttles generally. Also there are a few airport options to fly into so that will affect your transportation.

Just booked our DL vacation for July 2012, WDW veteran. First time to DL. Staying at GF for 9 nights, plan to do other parts of SoCal, not jut DL. My questions are these:

Are the attractions at DL exact replicas of WDW? Tower of Terror, Space Mtn, etc. Should we plan to do those or skip and do the things we don't have in WDW?

We will have a rental car--is there free parking at DL?

Is World of Color like Fantasmic minus the fire, plus lasers?

What are some good local restaurants off site?

Thanks for your help!

The attractions are not the same. Many say Tower of Terror is better at WDW, but most agree that Space Mountain is far superior at Disneyland. In fast most of the rides that are "common" are very different. Pirates at DL is unbeatable. You'd be really cheating yourself if you skipped the rides that are "repeats".

Parking at Disneyland is currently $15 per day. You say you're staying at GF? Do you mean the Grand Californian? In that case you won't have to drive to the parks, but you will still have to pay $15 a day to park at the hotel.

World of Color is not like Fantasmic! at all and is a must see, especially since you plan to have a longer trip.

After having been to Disneyland many times. My wife and I went to WDW for the first time this year. The best advice we got from someone when we went to DW was not to compare the differences between the 2, but look for what you like best while your there. This made are WDW trip more enjoyable, because we weren't getting off a ride saying that is better at DL (WDW in your case). Enjoy it DL is special to us because we grew up with it, but WDW was just as much fun. I'm sure WDW is special for you, but you'll have a great time DL, it's a great experience being at the original park! Have fun!!!

I love the West Coast (or as they say the best coast). SoCal is amazing. Do at least four days for Disneyland/DCA/Downtown Disney etc. and then plan on at lease going to San Diego for a few days. Visit the Hotel Del Coronado and stay there if you can swing it. It was the Grand Floridian before the GF was and it literally sits on the beautiful blue and cold ocean.

Don't hesitate. I'm a WDW vet who went one year just to see if we liked it and now that's all we think about. Disneyland is far and away the best Disney park. Do the Walk in Walt's Footsteps Tour if you get the chance as well. Don't bother with Hollywood as its dirty and not worth it.

So much to see and do. San Fran, Monterey, and Yosemite National Park are all must see's as well. Make that your second trip so you can go back!!!

Disneyland shuttle, super shuttle, and others. Might want to rent a car.

We too are east coasters who just returned from our 2nd trip to DL. First time flew into LAX, rented a car, stayed 7 nights at DH, & squeezed in a trip to Legoland, a day at Newport Beach, & an Angel's game (to see the Red Sox). I think we purchased a 4-day park hopper, but added a 5th in order to sneak in for a fireworks. When we left, we felt we didn't spend enough time in DL, but more than covered DCA.

On our 2nd, we flew into John Wayne Airport (saved about $50 per ticket), bought vouchers to ride on the Disneyland Express (not free, but reasonable), stayed 6 nights at GF, and purchased a 6-day hopper. While DL truly is a neighborhood park, we decided to immerse ourselves the best we could and not rent a car. The first two days of our trip the park was empty, so were able to hit the "must do" rides (all of the coasters, ToT, Indy & HM - Pirates sadly was closed) , some several times. Then, when the crowds rolled in over the weekend and the beginning of Turkey-day week, we used fastpasses and hit less popular attractions. When day 6 rolled around, even though we had our fill with the crowds, we were able to simply slow down and take it all in because we had managed to do everything that we wanted. Yet, the moment we checked out, we were thinking ahead to when our next return would be.

As others have said, WDW is awesome but DL is special. It's Walt's park. And, even though I have been to WDW many times, I would pick DL over any single park in Orlando because, even though it is much smaller, everywhere you look there is something magical! Every Disney fan must make a pilgrimage at least once. And then, like us, once you do, you'll long to return.:wizard:

Wow. You put it beautifully. Glad to see you enjoy it as much as my family does.

The only thing I would add to going to Disneyland is to make sure you give yourself enough time. Yeah you can race through the park in 2-3 days but you can't fully enjoy it unless you do 5 or more. Sounds crazy I know. There are just so many little things if you don't stop and take the time. Also you really need to drive up and down the coast. Hwy 1 or the PCH is just amazing from LAX to Monterey. Yosemite National Park is a MUST DO for anyone. To me its heaven on earth. San Diego and the Hotel Del Coronado is another must do. I think I was meant to live in that state.
