NEVER AGAIN! A holiday family vacation report...

Just read your whole TR tonight. :thumbsup2 I have thought about a fun extended family trip to WDW, then I read TRs like yours and change my mind. Too many people to deal with and someone always ends up losing out.

It really wasn't all bad. As long as everyone is ok with having some time on their own, without the whole group together, it probably works out just fine. In our case, not everyone was ok with that, and it definitely made things a bit more difficult.

Plus... the bad trip allowed me to justify a "do-over" trip, so we're going again next week! :thumbsup2

Enjoyed your trip report/photos.

I'll tune in tomorrow to see about your last bit of drama.

I'm sure she'll have a great time! We leave our cats for 5-6 day trips all the time, and they've always been fine. Unless she has horses, I can't imagine a weeklong trip being a huge issue.

Where are you staying?

First of all I have truly enjoyed your TR and hate to see it end! What a last day (with the rain, boarding ME bus, long lines). It seems you all had a great time and thanks for sharing with us!

Now to answer your question, I think my son's gf will have fun once she gets there. We are staying at the BWV with a boardwalk view and I can hardly contain my excitement. This will be DS32's gf (with the pets) first visit plus my sons, DS23 & DS16's first visit and I can't wait to get them all hooked! As far as the type of pets, my DS32 and her have a couple of lizards, an iguana, tarantula, one snake (hers died a couple of weeks ago), mice & rats :scared1: Not the usual household pets :rotfl2: Her concern is her iguana who is very temperamental and since they live with us (and all of us are going on this trip), this would leave the feedings to her mom who hopefully will travel the 20 miles ea way a few times that week to feed them :confused3 This should prove interesting :lmao:

My daughter has a cat who stays in my room (due to the above pets) and he will be fine (his name is Meatball and he looks just like Mike Meyer)

Wow, that's a lot of exotic pets! I think they'll be fine. And I'm sure your whole human brood will have a great time!

Arrival Home and Final Thoughts

Although we boarded on time, we sat on the plane FOREVER before take-off. We found out later that TSA was opening and checking every. single. bag. that went into the plane. :scared1: We ended up taking off about an hour late. The flight was uneventful, and we even made up some time in the air, landing only 20 minutes late, at 8:22. Here’s my twitter feed from the point of landing…

“Back in Dallas. Took off an hour late, landed 20 minutes late. Not too bad. Now to wait on luggage.” 8:22 PM Jan 1st

“Spoke too soon. Waiting for mechanic to fix jet bridge so we can get off the plane.” 8:32 PM Jan 1st

“Still on the plane...” 8:59 PM Jan 1st

“Heading to a new gate. Hopefully this one will work...” 9:00 PM Jan 1st

“Finally off the plane. Headed to the car now. Home in an hour or so.” 9:18 PM Jan 1st

You should notice that I was not off the plane for almost exactly one hour after landing. :sad2: Luckily, they had unloaded most of the luggage while we were sitting at the first gate, the one with the broken jet bridge, so by the time we got off the plane, made a quick bathroom stop, and got to the baggage claim area, all of our bags were there waiting on us. :thumbsup2 The shuttle to the off-site parking lot came quickly, and we were back at the car by 10:00PM. We have an hour drive home from the airport, and we had to drop my parents off at their house, so we got home just after 11:00PM. Our trip was officially over, without another one on the horizon.

The End.

Final thoughts:
- It can be difficult to travel with a large group, especially if members of the group are unwilling to do their own thing. For sanity’s sake, expectations of how much time will be spent together/separate should be spelled out before the trip begins to avoid hurt feelings.

- It’s hard to be the “tour guide.” The group assumed I had seen everything I’ve ever wanted to see on previous trips, and seemed to think that DH & I should sacrifice the things we wanted to do in favor of the things they wanted to do. Again, this could have been prevented ahead of time if we’d made the expectations more clear.

- The worst decision we made was cancelling our room at AKV in favor of a room at SSR with everyone else. Being in a different resort would have forced some alone time, and given us more freedom to do our own things.

- If we ever do a trip like this again, we’ll only take one side of the family at a time, so we won’t have quite as much conflict with the different touring styles.

- The extended family all had a GREAT time, so from that perspective, this trip was very successful. They’re all asking about going back… I’m thinking Christmas 2011 ;)

- I did enjoy the trip, even though it was very stressful for me. It was really nice to see my parents enjoying their first trip to WDW, and having them finally understand why we like it so much.

- I’m SO SO SO glad to have another trip coming up, without the extended family, so that I can really enjoy my happy place. SIX MORE DAYS! :teeth:

I really enjoyed reading your TR. The title caught my eye because that is exactly how I felt after our last trip with extended family...about 20 people from both sides. I completely agree with your statements above, too, and plan to live by them on our future trips.

Thanks for sharing!

I really hate to see this trip come to an end. So glad everyone had a great time despite the different touring styles. :)

Good trip report and I agree that alone time should be spelled out before the trip. Now you can have the trip that you wanted.:rotfl:

I sure hope so! :rotfl:

Did you say 6 more days?

It's practically 5 days now, since we'll have to leave our house by 3:00am next Saturday morning to make our 5:30 flight! So much to do, so little time...

Camera did you use>>>>???? I loved the reports & the pics!

Most of the pictures I posted were taken with my Canon XSi. A few were taken with MIL's Nikon Coolpix S220 (I think, not sure) and a few were taken with our Olympus Tough (waterproof) point-and-shoot.

I'm glad you enjoyed the report and the pics!
