Neutral Density Filter

Hello All,

I was wondering what ND filter I should purchase to get a better fireworks shot. I have a Canon 7D with the stock 28-135 lens and a 70-300 lens. I assume I will more than likely be using the 28-135. Would the filter work on both lenses or would I need 2 different filters?

I'm not familiar with Canon lenses, so I don't know if these two are the same size or not. You buy filters based upon size. For example, my Nikon 24-70 & 70-200 lenses both use 77mm filters. However, I have a smaller 50m /1.8 that uses a 58mm thread for the filter.

You can buy filters with a specific density, but there are also variable density filters like the Singh-Ray that range from 2-8 stops.

This is not a recommendation, but just an experience. I don't have an unlimited budget, so after much discussion I purchased a 77mm B + W 1.8 filter. I believe it is a 6-stop filter. I also purchased step up/down rings for my other lenses. I got lucky in that my biggest lens uses an 82mm filter and the 77 with the ring did not cause any vignette. The rings work well with the smaller lens except I can't use the lens hoods. Anyway that is my experience.

My rings block lens hoods as well.

OP - you won't need the long range lens for fireworks if you intend to be in the MK, so fitting the wider angle should be your priority.
