Neurotic Mom time....Can My Kids Fall Over The Railing?!?!

I'm specifically thinking in our room (there are 5 of us, so it will be a category 4 room). What if, while we are soundly sleeping, the littlest stinker manages to get the door to the veranda open ~ right now, this thought has me waking in the middle of the night. I know I'm being paranoid, but I can't picture how high the railings might be, if they are "climb-able", etc. Can anyone help reassure me? Thanks!

It has been a couple of years since we were in a Cat 6 room that also has a verandah. If I remember correctly unlike doors at home the locking latch for the verandah doors is up at the top. So if your little one did get up as long as the top was latched correctly and locked they would not be able to get outside. Hopefully someone else who has gone recently will verifiy that this is still the case. Don't worry many children cruise on DCL every month and Disney has made sure that they will be kept safe!!

Not only are the railing difficult to climb, they're even pretty difficult to throw your children over. Just kidding! We stayed in the Cat. 4 rooms last July with our kids age 6 and 8. The plexiglass covers the railings pretty well. If you're worried about your kids climbing on the tables or chairs and leaping off, I'd have them removed from the verandah. That just takes away from your leisure time out there. You'll have to decide what makes you feel comfortable. Relax and Enjoy!

I believe there is a lock on the door and it is at the top of the door so it could not be opened by little people.

Also the rail of the Verandah has a plexi glass sheet down the front as to prevent climbing...

I have not heard of any climbing stories from this forum or and news stories saying that a young person has just climbed off the Disney Ship.... And if your little one does manage to do this ..would be the first ... Also they will be so tired at the end of the day that sleep would be one of the only things on there mind..

I feel your concern however..........

Thank you ~ that helps a lot! JJsmama, I'm sorry ~ I missed your post earlier this week, or I wouldn't have asked the same question again. A lot of good information to make me feel more at ease. I'll relax, but the youngest still might end up sleeping between Mommy & Daddy ~ I don't always trust him!

The fifth person also sleeps in a bed that folds out in front of the veranda door, which already makes it difficult for adults to get out when someone is using it. Your little one shouldn't be able to manage that. :)

Actually, a young person did jump off the ship...but by "young," I mean a teenager who was responding to a dare. He jumped off deck 4 and was caught when he tried to get back on the ship soaking wet and without his Key to the World Card. Earned him confinement to his stateroom for the rest of the cruise, except when accompanied by his parents.

He JUMPED off? And he was able to get back to the ship? Surely the ship wasn't moving, was it? I would think he would have been pulled under by the turbulence in the water.

Ok, point taken ~ I'll relax. My husband is ROFL, between Nick@OKW little cartoon guys (cute!) and this:

"Not only are the railing difficult to climb, they're even pretty difficult to throw your children over."
(Thanks, DVC Cruise!)

He told me it's time to chill!

Oh yes....we were on the cruise where the kid jumped off deck 4. We were docked in St. Thomas...he did it on a dare and was confined to his cabin for the rest of the cruise by the captain unless accompanied by his parents.

He looked pretty suspicious when he tried to get back onboard soaking wet....his KTTW card showed his was already onboard....so it did not take much for the CM's to figure out what happened.

I was worried about my children falling overboard too, but once we boarded I immediately realized that just wasn't going to be an issue. My husband and I decided that if an adult wanted to jump overboard, there are a couple spots (near the lifeboat gates) on deck 4 where an adult could jump -- but a child just couldn't do it accidentally.

As for the teen who jumped overboard on purpose: If he were mine, I'd have confined him to quarters long after the cruise was over! He must not have had any idea just how dangerous that stunt was.

A little late here...but ...all I know is that even I have trouble opening those doors! And I'm 4* something years old!!!
