Network television is really becoming a cesspool.

I can understand wanting to keep certain language from young children but in reality they have already heard it. It's nice to think they are innocent forever but that is rarely the case. My daughter was called a 'B' at school when she was 5 years old. She told me about it and I used it as a teachable moment (I hate that term so, so much) and told her that it wasn't a nice word and I didn't want to hear her say it anytime soon.

I have told her that I don't expect her to never swear but I hoped she would wait until she was older. I don't want to hear the F word come out of her mouth ever but I am realistic enough to know that more than likely she will say it at some point in her life. As long as she doesn't say it around kids or her elders I don't really care. I don't think it is going to make her a criminal or a degenerate.

Tv can do what it wants. I can always not watch a show.

I do wish they'd use some discretion when airing what their network proclaims a "family" program. If I am watching something aimed at my family's demographic, I'd like them to not air promos of shows aimed at an older demographic featuring scenes that aren't appropriate for my children.

Thank goodness for TiVo. It does drive me nuts though.

My 7yo doesn't need to see a murder scene---real or fiction to promote a news program or the next installment of CSI or equivilant.

It is because of the children, obviously. Hearing that word will lead to orgies in the streets across America. It goes like this:

Step 1: Child hears naughty language on the television
Step 2: Something happens (no one really knows what)
Step3: Orgies in the streets.
This is great! :rotfl:

We don't seem to have TV's playing in public much here. In sports bars and in TV display areas... I can't think of anywhere else. Are public TV's prevalent in other areas?

This is why we don't have cable, have only one small TV, and let the kids watch almost nothing.

What I hate is when the kids are watching something like American Idol or some other show, and they start showing all the scary and gory movie commercials or all the ones for Halloween at Universal Studios. They terrify my daughter. Why can't kids watch a show without all that stuff. Save that advertising for later.

I didn't see what Lisa posted up s few responses, but this is what I am talking about.

There is no real causation between speech and morals. Some of the most refined speakers are engaging in tax evasion, copyright violation, and other self-centered immorality. Meanwhile, some people with the trashiest verbiage rushed down to New Orleans after Katrina, and are busily trying to clean up the environment around the Gulf of Mexico at this moment.

This is such a true statement. Zach de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine) is probably one of the most profane people when it comes to his music. However, he has spent an entire career donating money and time to various causes, both politically and social. Meanwhile my fellow "pew dwellers" on Sunday barely lift a finger or put a pen to their checkbooks for anything.

Language and morals are completely independent of each other.

No big surprise to me -- after all, it is a soap opera.

Doesn't shock me at all anymore -- it's such a common word thrown around on TV.

The first few times they did it -- I think I had the Rhett/Scarlett shocked thinking "WOW!!! When did that start they were allowed to say that on TV????"

Honestly, it won't be long before they are saying worse and NOT bleeping it out.

I really am old school and hate when they even say "Frankly my dear I don't give a ____" word but that is so common I don't think anyone even considers it bad language anymore. It would be amazing to see a show actually have dialog that doesn't have an explictive every other word out of their mouth.

Nothing surprises me what shows up on Network TV anymore -- I'm not even 100% sure they HAVE standards and just make things up to see how far they can go before there is any backlash.

I am with those who are bothered by the commercials. I know pretty much what to expect from shows and can choose whether or not to watch them, especially where my daughter is concerned. However, you do not know what to expect from the commercials. Some are really inappropriate, IMHO. It is a pain to rely on the DVR all the time.

And remarkably, nothing the FCC has any intention of doing has anything to do with the content of commercials. :confused3
