DH and I have been looking at DVC for a while now and finally decided now was the time to buy. We made an offer on a small BLT resale contract with an October use year.

:banana::banana::banana::banana:

I know I am over thinking the whole use year thing, but it is a big commitment!

We prefer not to vacation at WDW during the summer months due to the heat and humidity. Since our kids are in school, that limits us to Spring Break, Thanksgiving Break (our school district closes for the week) and Christmas Break. We are planners, I cannot think of one time we have cancelled a vacation once everything was booked.

I feel *good* about October for WDW trips. BUT…I feel like it will limit us if we want to take a spontaneous trip somewhere else over the summer. We won’t be able to transfer our points “out” of DVC to the concierge collection or to DCL.

What about RCI? Does the “rule of 4” restrict us from transferring our points to RCI during the last 4 months? As a DVC member, are you able to log in to the RCI website and see available inventory before you commit your points?

We are waiting on ROFR for an October UY contract as well. I chose October for the exact reasons you did - we don't care for WDW when it is hot, and our main school breaks are Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break.

I don't know the answer to your trading points questions, but in our case I think we will use all or our points once a year at WDW. We won't have enough starting out to cover more than a week a year. You could always add points for a different UY to cover summer trips, but I don't think DVC works all that well for spontaneous trips anyway. We're planning to just continue summer trips as normal - they won't have anything to do with DVC or trading for a different timeshare. I could see us one day adding some points at BCV for a short SWW trip every other year. For that I would probably choose a December UY.

Good luck with your resale purchase! I'm very happy with all the money we will save buying resale but the waiting part sort of stinks.

You are definitely over analyzing. We bought a resale then an add-on about ten years ago. If I'm understanding your comments it sounds like you feel you are limited in which months you can make reservations. That's incorrect. As long as you have enough points on hand, and or available to borrow, you can make your reservations 11 months in advance at your home resort or 7 months in advance at another WDW DVC resort. Our main contract is December while our add-on UY begins in February. We do have to do a little extra thinking when it comes to managing our points but it is no big deal. When we first started we only went in the summer to coincide with the school year. Now we go twice a year. We never did understand the big deal about which use year is best to purchase. We've never been limited or constrained as to when we plan to go to WDW/DVC.

:) I think Oct. is good for you, again I am not sure about trading but since you are not planning on traveling to WDW during the 4 months preceeding, you should be fine. We have a Dec. UY. DH makes his vacation with the Fire Dept a year in advance in Dec. So we get our points to use 12/01 and make plans for the coming year. That way I can make our fall trips at the 11 month mark usually. I think if you manage in advance like that, any use year would be fine...but because of cancellations rules and when you are planning to travel Oct would be good.

Remember that your use year has nothing to do with when you can travel, it just signifies when you get your annual allotment of points, and also when your banking window for your current year's points expires. We have a February use year and have taken a vacation in September, 2009, and have one planned for December, 2010 and a cruise for June, 2011, all of which were booked on points. Still, for holiday travel, October is a great use year.

I will caution you, though, that Disney might very likely exercise ROFR with your BLT contract. Disney is currently selling BLT at $120/point and the points are still selling very well. I can't imagine that Disney would let a contract slide at anything less than $115/point. I wish you the best of luck, though, and hopefully, we'll be welcoming you home soon! :goodvibes

I am concerned about ROFR, but we are going to see what happens at $102 a point.

After looking at the ROFR thread on these boards and talking with multiple resale companies I think we might have a chance...only time will tell.

We are not looking to travel to WDW this year, so we have time to be patient! :surfweb:

Good luck! I am waiting for ROFR right now too (it is agonizing!), fingers crossed you're able to buy that contract! Sounds like a great deal on BLT points :)
