hi
i posted this on another board and it was suggested that i post it here. I will be changing planes in toronto on my way to florida and i will be alone with 2 small kiddies. I am looking of a step by step guide of what to do once I get off the westjet plane until i board the next plane. If any one is used to this and can tell me what to do please advise.

We changed planes there on our trip 3 years ago. I'm sorry, I can't remember step by step, but I do remember not being overwhelmed like I was at the Chicago Ohare Airport a number of years ago! It's pretty easy at Pearson! Hopefully someone else can give you the step by step. The one thing I can tell you is that if you are unsure where the gate is that you need to get to, just ask any airport personal, they were great with us!

1st off, be prepared as you will need to collect your luggage in Toronto, go through customs and recheck your luggage again ...

If you know what terminal you will be arriving and departing from, the Pearson website has some good step by step videos to help you find your way ... http://www.airportwayfinder.com/wayfinders/yyz/?v=3_2

how can i find out before hand what terminal we arrive at or depart? we are travellijng on westjet.

you won't be able to find out what gate you come in to until you check in at the airport before you depart. Also if you're not sure where to go when you get to toronto ask the desk agent when you step off the plane they are very helpful in guiding you to where you need to be.

You may be able to go through customs before you get on the plane in your home destination to avoid having to pick up your luggage and having to re check it. I am not positive on that though.

Good luck!

There is no need to be concerned. I have done the exact same thing a couple of times going through Toronto to Orlando and other US destinations.

As a previous poster mentioned, go to the Pearson website and take a look at the video clips they have regarding changing terminals and US connecting flights. I found it a great start.

I can't give you directions within Pearson but an overall general process is:

1. Arrive at Toronto Pearson and head into the terminal. Once in the terminal head towards the area for US Destinations. (Not sure the exact wording of the sign, but you'll see it).

2. Pass the security officer at this point and show your tickets for the connecting flight.

3. Once past security you will get your bags off the belt there and this is when you'll put the magical express tags on if you have them. (I don't put them on at the home airport because I don't want to confuse anybody).

4. Go through customs and then return your bags to the carousel on that side.

5. You're now ready to follow typical airport routine for your next flight.

6. ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR TRIP!!!!

When are you flying down? We are going on the 12th of September with Westjet. It is pretty easy when you get into Pearson. We haven't had any trouble yet...fingers crossed. You will have to clear customs there.

The previous poster is correct you will have to collect your luggage then after you go through customs check it in again.

Have fun!!

Good luck! For years I've elected to drive up to 4 hours to get a direct flight to avoid what you're facing. But it's not impossible. The biggest challenge is that you have to collect all your luggage and go through US customs in Toronto.

Westjet staff are reasonably helpful, so don't be afraid to ask questions. Be aware that they cannot help you in the US customs and immigration area.

Paperwork:
* wear an outfit with good pockets or plan to use a specific pocket in a carry-on bag with all your travel documents. You will have to access your passports and boarding passes several times before you board the plane in Toronto. Keep them handy.
* carry a letter of consent from your spouse, indicating you have permission to take the kids to the US and back. If you can, get the letter notarized. If you don't have one, there is template on the Government of Canada website (look for "Traveling with Children").
* carry a copy of your hotel reservation. US customs and immigration officials sometimes ask for this, to verify destination claims.
when you get the US customs and immigration form in Toronto, fill it out completely. You will not be allowed to enter the luggage screening area until it's complete.

Navigating the airport:
* Terminal information should be on your Westjet reservation. It might be a shortened version, like YYZ T1 or YYZ T3. Hopefully you will not have to change terminals.
* You will have to carry your family and all your luggage through the airport simultaneously. Be prepared! Make sure you can drive your stroller and your luggage (or luggage cart) at the same time -- practice a home with either your luggage or a grocery cart. If you can't, you will likely have to rely on the kindness of strangers for a bit of help at the airport. Never underestimate the kindness of strangers!
* If you're lucky, you may get to use the golf cart. (Don't hesitate to ask!) However, Toronto is very busy and handicapped passengers get priority over families.
* If you're using a stroller, you will have to empty it of kids, and fold it if asked. We've been asked to fold ours, even when it was obvious it would not fit through the x-ray machine. (You can't argue with customs officials, just smile and nod and let them figure out on their own – they're almost like children.) If it fits through the x-ray machine, great. If not, be prepared for a 5-10 minute wait while they examine the stroller in detail. Note: Canadian officials may do this procedure in Newfoundland too, but not likely as thorough as the US officials in Toronto. Don't lose your cool, let them do their job.
* Once through the security, you will be asked to place your luggage on a conveyer, and then you can continue with your kids, carry-on bags and gate-checked stroller.

Carry-on packing:
* Connections make me nervous. Pack at least one extra outfit for each member of your family, because if things go wrong (late plane, lightning storm, etc.), it's entirely possible that you will miss a connection. Missing connections in Toronto is a pain, especially if there are only one or two flights each day. (I've had a couple 8-hour lay-overs in Toronto because of weather issues affecting the first legs of my flights. No, it wasn't I wasn't flying Westjet.)
* Airport officials are pretty forgiving about kids food. You can get away with pretty much anything, as long as you can claim it's kids food. Your flight situation is a bit complicated because Westjet only provides snacks and drinks, but no meals. You have to bring your own. The complication is that you can't take fresh fruits and veggies into the US, and you will officially be in US jurisdiction in Toronto. I suggest taking packaged foods like apple sauce, yogurt, granola bars, potato chips, Cheerios, etc. Sandwiches are usually OK, but I've heard horror stories of sandwich confiscation because they contained fresh meat, cheese and veggies. (Hopefully authorities are not that strict for your family.)
* Take an empty water bottle through security, then fill it at a fountain in the airport waiting area. This is especially important if there's poor weather – turbulence can force crews to stop serving beverages. You're going to spend a lot of time in the air; you and your kids will be thirsty.

This was the only hiccup I had when I went through TO in May so I'll give you heads up. When we followed the US Flights sign and ended up in a huge room with what looked like more check in desks we were a little confused but all you have to do is turn immediatly to the right and BAM!....there's the security folks and the door going through into where you pick up your luggage to go through customs.

The forms to fill out for declaring anything you might be bringing with you are there too. Another hint....have the address of the hotel you're staying in handy...you need to fill this in on the card. Then once you get your luggage keep heading down the hall and you'll hit customs. Stop at the line and an agent will wave you over to his desk for a quick how-do-you-do and then away you go.

And don't be afraid to ask any staff you see what to do. I've always found airport employees great for info when said with a smile and a thanks.

How long is your layover?

Is it possible to clear customs in Halifax if we're connecting in Toronto?

No - you'll have to pre-clear in Toronto. You can only pre-clear for non-stop flights to the US (which would be the Toronto-Orlando leg of your trip if you go Halifax-Toronto-Orlando).

:)

Don't hesitate to ask people at the airport if you are confused. They are very helpful.

In connecting on recent flights as we have approached the airport the flight attendants have provided terminal and gate information for those connecting. There has also been a magazine in the back of the seat in front of us with a map of the airport we are incoming too. Give it a lat minute study and it should help a little with navigation.

WestJet is in Terminal 3 which is the smaller of the 2 terminals (and yes, there's only 2 terminals, T1 and T3). There's signs everywhere to guide you through the process. Look for the "Connections to US" signs and follow them. If you're not sure, there's information booths all over the place.

(flying through Toronto airport in about 3 hours, used to do it at least once a week)

mc2,

Thanks for the quick reply! I thought that would be the case but it was worth asking.

No problem! We're doing the Halifax-Toronto-Orlando flight on Wednesday morning with Westjet - don't forget that the first part of your trip is still considered a domestic flight, so you'll only have to be there 90 minutes in advance, instead of the 2 hours that is recommended for international flights (which makes a big difference for a 6:30 am flight....or at least it will for me- I am so NOT a morning person!).

I just noticed this statement on the Westjet website:

** Toronto departures to the US. Due to facility constraints, cut off time for check in and baggage is 60 minutes.

So for those of us who are flying with Westjet and have 2-3 hours between our connecting flights, I guess we need to make sure that we check-in drop off our baggage for the Toronton-Orlando leg of the trip at least 1 hour prior to departure? Or is this statement only for people who are beginning their trip in Toronto (e.g. doesn't apply for connections?)? Is anyone familiar with this clause?

Thanks!

mc2, the 'legal' connection for YYZ domestic to transborder is 1h10min, as I posted on OP's other thread on this same topic. So long as you adhere to that you will be fine (and really, there is no way you could be booked on a shorter connection unless you booked two legs seperately on different itineraries, or if you had a schedule change in which case you should change it, and it sounds like yours is much longer) The only thing would be if you drop your bags very late, but the cutoff for checking luggage on the first leg at YYZ doesn't apply.

I'm not sure how OP says that they have a very short connection as the airline cannot book anything shorter than a legal connection, so it is at least a 1hr10min connection, and most likely more, as the vast majority of flights from YYT to MCO have 2-4 hour connection times.
