My nephew, a senior in high school, was in a horrible car accident a month ago. His girlfriend was driving on a gravel road and lost control of the car. They hit a tree and my nephew had to be life flighted. His dad, my Brother in Law, works for Medflight as an EMT and since the accident was close to where they live he was able to make it to the crash sight and they allowed him to fly to OSU medical center with him. He broke his C7/C6 vertebra and they weren't sure if the spinal cord was damaged or if the spinal swelling was causing paralysis. My nephew was in SICU for three weeks while they tried to schedule the surgery but between the pnemonia and trying to keep his oxygen levels stable they kept having to cancel the surgery. Last week they moved him from SICU to another ICU unit and brought in another doctor. They seem to have a handle on the pnemonia for now and he only has a smaller amount of fluid in one lung and he is only on one chest tube now rather than 6. He is breathing more on his own and the respirator has been turned down, for lack of a better way to describe it. He is more aware now and is not as heavily sedated, although he is on some serious morphine. If his cultures come back negative for infection they can finally do the surgery.

The girlfriend was treated and released the night of the accident and although the highway patrol are looking to charge her, depending on my nephews recovery, it was a tragic accident. There was no alcohol involved. It looks like it was a combination of an inexperienced driver and going too fast for a gravel road.

My BIL is a firefighter, as is his dad, and they have recieved so much support from both them and the larger community. OSU is an hour away and BIL and my nephew's mom (no relation to me) have been staying there. Thankfully BIL had enough sick time built up and the union and MedFlight took care of hotels. They are now in an empty rental home of one of the MedFlight family.

I have them on every prayer list I can think of as I believe in the power of prayer. If we can get the back surgery out of the way then his body can concentrate on getting better. I feel so helpless and this is all I can do, pray.
