I need meaningful gift ideas please. I don't want to just give him money.

If possible, maybe plan a day for the two of you to do fun things...i.e the movies, a park, lunch etc. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing more meaningful than time. I totally understand you not wanting to give just money...I always feel the same way for my godson, but in the case of first communion, there are only so many rosary beads, frames and little statues you have room for. I would look for something small that is religions in nature since this is such an important sacrament, but try to stay away from the run of the mill things. Maybe look at the day he was born and give him a medal with the patron saint of his birthday....hope this helps :)

My son's most cherished 1st Communion gift was a Bible my sister gave him with his name inscribed. He just loves that Bible.

My niece/goddaughter made 1st Holy Communion last year and I had the same problem. There's a tradition in our family that the godparent (godfather or godmother) @ 1st Holy Communion purchase a cross (for girls) or a St. Christopher medal (for boys). Not sure where this came from but it has been tradition in our family for years and years. When my niece/goddaughter made hers, I couldn't get a her a cross because someone had purchased that for her Christening (BIL's side of the family. Hello, we have a tradition here :teeth:). I bought her a bond although from what I understand, they aren't too popular these days.

All her money goes directly into her savings account she's had since before she was born so it didn't really matter if it was cash or a bond. I also bought her some clothes she really wanted. Couldn't think of anything else.

I was really ticked about the cross. I could have bought her another one, but how many should 1 child have?

Good luck!

dd and ds each got a unique gift for their baptisms that could be easily done for a first communion as well. someone took the invites to a store that makes those "wedding candles" (large candle with the invitation inlaid on the candle-you choose the color theme). the card that came with it said that it should be lit during special moments or in times of spirtitual need "to celebrate and remind you of the warm glow of your saviour's love".

dd has received several bibles over the years, but honestly, it seems that her religion classes always call for a specific edition/version (and it gets changed year to year)-so these are'nt put to much practical use.

rosary?
something from oneshare.com
a collector's set of coins from usmint.gov
savings bond

That's about all I can think of.

Our kids got silver 1st Communion coins from Grandpa that they really like. They also got saint statues that go with their names. A cross for their bedroom is nice. The boys each got medals too. They wear them occasionally. They also got several rosaries, DS13 got one from his Godfather that he bought in Scotland so that was special.

How about a nice devotional book with an inscription from you...and a few dollars in a card for him to get excited about! ;) My girls still keep the books they received at their baptism from grandparents on their bookshelves even though they're now too old for them - they're very special.

Thanks everyone!

I was thinking maybe a bible, but I need to go to the Catholic Religious store to see what they have. I like the idea of something with his patron saint on it. I guess a little cash won't hurt, you should see his eyes light up when he gets money!

Anyone else?

Jewelry -- A crucifix ring or a Christ head necklace.

Books -- Marion's Handbook for Children. They make one with an abalone shell cover for boys (the girls' version is mother of pearl). The edges of the pages are gold-leafed, and the book contains most, if not all, Catholic prayers plus the words of the Mass and other Catholic ceremonies.

For a fun little extra, you can get a praying Beanie Baby type teddy. Catholic stores sell them.

My advice--shop early at your Catholic store! The good stuff sells out quickly in the spring.

Oooh, I like the Marion's handbook for children idea.

When I made my first communion my godmother gave me a set of rosary beads that had a sterling silver cross. The back was engaved with her initials, my initials, and the date of the event. She also took them to be blessed by a bishop before giving them to me.

I like the gold crucifix idea or a Christ head necklace. Those are both things he will keep forever. I also think a special set of rosary beads is a nice idea. My goddaughter is making her Communion in May and I bought her a beautiful diamond initial pendant-I would've given her a cross but already gave her one at her baptism.
