Okay, so I live in the country. Our lots are about an acre. I have woods on three sides and across the street. Living in the country we shoot guns from time to time. There is an area where it is safe to shoot as even thru the woods there is not a house for at least a mile. DS got a new rifle and is sighting the scope which means he is shooting the gun. So my next door neighbor texts me at work about it. This is the second time she has done this. Last week she did the same thing. Last week I called him and asked him to stop and he already had. I did text him today because he said he was going somewhere to sight the gun so I was surprised he was shooting. But we are not the only people shooting guns. Hello!! It is deer season. Not an hour goes by during the day that I don't hear a gun going off.

She and her husband don't hunt and that is fine. But she was raised with guns. I know her parents. They live near us too so it is not like she has not heard a gun before. She texted me once while I was on vacation because DS had some friends over and they got loud. Not music. Just hanging out in the yard. 3 friends. She also texted me about my chickens and complaining about my rooster. Now the rooster is on the opposite side of the yard from her house. I can't hear him crow in my house at all. My neighbor behind me can't hear him crow either and she is closer to the coop as well.

But this is the same neighbor who spends all New Years Eve and all Fourth of July shooting fireworks that sound like we are being invaded. I mean things hitting my roof, my dogs going crazy, all night long.

I told my husband I would be texting her on New Years but he said no, just let it go and I probably will but I am getting a new pistol for Christmas or shortly afterward and it will be shot as well. Maybe she just needs to move to the city.

Thanks. I feel better.

I grew up in the country and live in a semirural area. The lots in my development are all about an acre. These houses are too close together for people to be shooting off guns. They would be arrested if they did as it is strictly prohibited. I can't believe shooting would be allowed on such small lots in your area or in unprotected open space of only a mile is dimension. Rifle bullets can carry a long distance, a mile or more. Your neighbor is correct to be concerned about this safety issue.

I live in a neighborhood like yours with woods behind us as far a you can see. People don't shoot guns off in their yards. It's a neighborhood, not a farm.

Agreed. I live in the country, my lot is over 4 acres, we back up to people with 10 and 15 acres and beyond that is hundreds of acres of state forest. We would NEVER shoot our guns outside. (I say ours but they're really DH's) He goes to a shooting range to shoot his guns. We also have our property posted as does all the people behind us so we don't have to deal with people shooting into property that does not belong to them.

I live in a subdivision and we have people shooting all the time too.

They are not shooting in my subdivision but in the subdivision next to us and we have people with farming acreage next to our subdivision.

I live in an unincorporated county in which there are no restrictions on shooting.

It can get unnerving, esp. when they are shooting automatics. I just ignore it.

In my opinion, 1 acre is WAY too small of an area to be shooting guns. That would really annoy me, and I'd probably do the same as your neighbor since I wouldn't want to directly confront somebody with a gun.

An acre lot isn't nearly large enough to be shooting on, especially a rifle. I'd probably call the cops instead of the owner of the property.

The rule! The rule! :stir:

OP, how old is your son?

I am in agreement with the previous posters, neither you nor your neighbors should be shooting off fire arms of any kind if you are close enough to see each others houses.

If their firework debris is hitting your house, they are tooooo dang close and I would say something.

An acre is not the country and that is too close for shooting near houses.

I would complain too.

The rooster thing is probably just held over frustration from the guns.

I agree with your Neighbour. We are on 10-100 Acre properties here and during hunting season Bow & Arrows only (Niagara, Ontario, Canada area) are allowed. The only gun like sound we hear are bird bangers in the Vineyards just before harvest time. Unless someone needs to take down a coyotte.
We are Farm & Agricultural designated and as such we call our Roads well.. Roads not Streets.

You don't have nearly enough land to shoot guns on your property. I would be calling law enforcement every time you did so. Your son can go to a shooting range to sight in his rifle.

Agree with everyone else. Not enough land for doing that. You'd better be on "acres and acres" before doing that. I don't even think 5 acres is enough. My uncles is on 6 acres and I can clearly see is neighbors. Too close.

This appears to be something that 99.9 percent of us agree on AND it involves guns! :goodvibes

I'm not quite sure I understand the set up here. OP, you say your house is an "acre" lot, but also say that there isn't another house for a mile. What's in between your acre and the next house a mile away? A mile encompasses many, many acres.

I think most of us hear "an acre" and think of a subdivision of house upon house, each of which has an acre size lot. I once lived in NJ on a lot of nearly 5 acres, but I could still easily see 5 neighbors houses, and I wouldn't dream of shooting off a gun. Even though every house was on a 4+ acre lot, because of the way the houses were situated, it could be less than a couple hundred feet between the houses. So, if that describes your situation, clearly you should not be shooting guns.

Is the neighbor complaining at least a "mile" away? (since you say the nearest house is at least a mile away). if that is the case, and there really is NO other house closer than 1 mile away, I'd probably ignore the complaint. But, if this is a neighborhood, where all the houses are adjacent, albeit on large size lots, put the guns away and shoot them somewhere else.

OP, where do you live? I'd like to know, so I never move there.

Your post is really scary! :scared:

Perhaps you would be better suited moving to the country.

Because if you are on one acre lots, that is a subdivision, not country.

If your neighbor's property, the complaining neighbor, is so close to you that fireworks can land on your roof, you are way, way too close to be shooting off bullets.

I also wouldn't be bothering with the niceties of texts. I would go directly to the sheriff.

As for your son, perhaps you should speak to the neighbor and get more information on what they were texting you about. Are you going by what your son told you happened?

The OP has expressed concerns about fire works landing on their home; or the sounds of. That tells me either the neighbour IS too close; or they hold one heck of a substantial fireworks display!

She might be able to hear the rooster. I can hear the dog barking a block over much louder than my neighbors dog because of the way sounds bounce off the walls in our neighborhood. I can also hear a doorbell that's 4 doors down, but my friend who is 2 doors in the other direction can't hear it nearly as loudly as I can.
