Neighbor filled my trash can. Furious. Long vent.

I am working from home today, so that means I can get a ton done between calls. My favorite thing to do on a Tuesday is clean out my pantry and fridge since it is our garbage day.

Filled up my garbage bag and walked it out to the curb where my Waste Management trash can is. I see that the lid is raised. That was weird, because I had space for another bag. Also, if our lid does not completely close, they will not take our trash.

I get closer and see that shoved in my trash can are two white bags (we use black). I couldn’t believe it. Now my other neighbor who had been gardening comes over and says the neighbor across the street walked over and threw them into our trash can. I open the bag and see two magazines on top with their name and address on it. Nosey gardening neighbor was correct.

Please keep in mind that these neighbors (trash can filling neighbors) are miserable and can barely muster a “hello” when I wave. We owe them no favors. We barely know them.

I was furious. I am not keeping my food for another week. This is my trash can and I can’t even throw out my own trash?

I take the two white trash out of my can and walk it across the street. I knock on the door. Nothing. I ring the doorbell. I hear movement, so I just place their trash on the porch. As I am walking down the steps, the lady opens the door as says to me “Why are you leaving this here?”

I said “Because it is yours.”

And she said “Yes. And I threw it away. Get it off my porch and take it back to where you found it.”

At this point my blood is boiling. I said “Don’t ever put trash in my can again. Pay for a second one if you don’t have enough room.”

She would not back down. She said “Well you had room. What’s the big deal?”

I explained that I had last minute trash and, besides, she shoved so much in that they would not have taken it anyway because the lid was up.

And do you know what she said to me in a snotty tone?

“Perhaps you shouldn’t wait to take your trash out at the last minute and we wouldn’t have this problem now, would we? And don’t ever put trash on my porch again!”

And then she threw her bags off her porch and into her yard and slammed the door.

I am still so mad that I am shaking. First of all, we live in a nice neighborhood with a hefty HOA fee. I am looking out the window and she still has trash bags in her yard. I hope she gets fined. I feel like calling and reporting her, but I am sure the gardening neighbor (Gladys Kravitz) has already made several calls. And my other neighbors will die when they come home from work and garbage bags are on display. So. I will allow them to make the calls.

I just can’t imagine being that entitled that you think you have full access to a service somebody else paid for.

Thanks for letting me vent. Sorry for this being so long.

She'd have gotten these hands. Don't you ever disrespect me. Especially in my own yard! She's lucky that you're more level-headed than I because I honestly would've opened her bags and scattered her trash all over her yard. If you want to be Petty McPitiful, I can be Petty Wap.

Thank you for venting, I got angry along with you! It's your yard and it's your trashcan! If no one else reports her stinkin' attitude, I hope you do. 'Cause ain't nobody got time for that!

I get your anger. I wholeheartedly applaud you for confronting the situation directly. I don't understand your refusal to follow through with an HOA complaint? Presumably you pay HOA fees? Given the attitude (and actions!) displayed when you addressed the situation, you need to nip this situation in the bud all the way around, kill it with the silver bullets and nail the door shut.

Wow, I can't even imagine your neighbor having the nerve to use your trash can and then being snotty about it when you confronted her. I guess it "takes all kinds" but good for you for not letting her get away with it. What she should have done would be to call you, or ask you when she saw you outside, if she could put a bag of trash in your can if you didn't need the space yourself. But just to do it without asking is wrong. I hope she doesn't try to use your trash can again without asking, but if she does you have every right to put it back on her porch. If I were you though I would have taken photos of the trash (with the magazines with their name/address) so you had proof, and then let the HOA president know what they did, if they did it a second time.

This has happened to me and I was fuming. After Christmas a few years ago a neighbor of mine filled my entire 96 gallon bin with Christmas tree clippings in the time between when the garbage was collected and when I got home from work (so I wouldn't have been able to throw anything away that week).

Unfortunately I lived in town homes so didn't know exactly who did it, but I just dumped them all there on the street. Who knows what happened to it but it shouldn't have been my problem.

Don't think this won't be a reoccurring event.

You are right. In fact, I am going to call now and report bags in yard and tell my story. I just don't know if I sound like a whiny baby. Glad you guys agree this lady was totally out of line.

Wow, they've got some nerve in their replies to you! I guess I wouldn't have thought it was that big a deal if on trash day they thought you were done and needed some room and threw a bag in there as long as it would close. They should ask, yes, but I wouldn't have got that upset if they didn't because I'd figure they honestly thought I was done and might be afraid to knock on the door early in the morning.
But this is just crazy! They owed you an apology not attitude. But I'd imagine the HOA will cause them some issues for throwing the bags in the yard, lol.

You're in no way whiny! It's your yard! She has responsibilities that she needs to worry about. She could've called like a PP said, but no, she decided to take it upon herself to use your bins (thank goodness for Gladys!) and made it seem like it shouldn't be some big deal. She's an entitled sad excuse for a neighbor and you have every right to be upset!

The other thing that angers me so much is the lid not closing. So even if I didn't have any garbage to add, they would not have taken my garbage for being in violation. Then I would have been stuck with a filled can for a week and no place to put my garbage.

Why are people this incredibly self-centered? How do they go through life like this?

You may not have photographic evidence, but at least you have an eyewitness to the trespassing. Sometimes a nosy Gladys is a blessing in disguise...

People like that count on either not getting caught, or not being confronted with their garbage (in this case quite literally).

You don't sound like a whiny baby at all, those are your trash cans that you pay for. That neighbor sounds like a psycho.

Perhaps she should use her own trash cans and not assume it's ok to use her neighbors'! I'm mad FOR you because this sense of entitlement business that people have is just infuriating sometimes! I hope your HOA can help with this! >:(
