Neighbor asked "Why did you get your dog?"

We did the thing you are absolutely not supposed to do-- went to the pet store to "visit" and fell in love. She is incredibly healthy (thirteen in a month)-- I don't advocate pet shops at ALL and don't think anyone should buy a dog from one. We just got incredibly lucky-- she provides us with so much love, companionship, and laughs!

We love dogs and got ours to be a companion for our then 3 year old son. When we brought our pup home from the shelter, our son immediately ran to his train table. He came back with two trains, put one down in front of the dog and asked, "Wanna play trains?"

Cutest thing I've ever seen. They are still best buds to this day.

Don't feel guilty about going to a pet store. Those animals need love too!

When our kids started asking people in the park if they could pet their dog, we got the idea. (We were with them at all times, so it wasn't that they were being lured away by a stranger with a dog.) When they started asking people at church, friends at school, etc.., if they could come visit their dogs, we knew it was time. I'd never had an indoor dog before, so I was very leary at first. I didn't want my house to smell like an animal. We chose a miniature schnauzer who is just precious! He will be 5 years old in June and is definitely a member of the family!

That is so cute! :lovestruc

Hopefully, he mis-spoke. ;) Anyhow, we got our dog because after eight days of being without our beloved dog, I couldn't take the kids crying themselves to sleep, DH and I moping around the house and wondering what that noise was in the middle of the night. Hence our new puppy! :goodvibes

We got our first dog, a wonderful Malamute/Husky mix named Nakita, when I was around 2. I had been asking for a dog since the day I could talk and my uncle had Nakita. She outgrew his house so we took her.

We got Jake because my mom fell in love with her and just couldn't live without her, even though my mom is not an animal person in the slightest (if it weren't for me we wouldn't have any animals).

I got Lacey because I thought it would be fun to have a dog like that. I have since told people to shoot me if I ever say it would be fun to have a dog like her ever again. HAHA.

But I continue to have dogs (and probably will the rest of my life) because they really are the only true friends a person can ever have. You will never have a falling out with them. They will never tell any of your secrets (and you can share the secrets you wouldn't dare tell anyone else). When you have a bad day they want nothing more than to sit next to you as you cry and when you have a good day they want nothing more than to sit next to you as you celebrate. I have a dog for purely selfish reasons. I get more out of it than they do, and I'm sure that could be said for a lot of people and their dogs.

The first one was a wedding gift for my husband... thats when I was a "cat person" and didn't like dogs. Turns out I love dogs and really don't care for cats, but having never really grown up with a dog, I had no idea about that. Now I love love LOVE dogs.

I didn't get them...they chose me! :headache:

I agree - every dog has always "gotten" me!! But it's ok because they are good to me, take me on regular walks, allow me to share my food with them and sometimes I get to sleep in my bed. :goodvibes

I got my Chihuahua when he was a meager 3 pounds at 8 months old. He was found by my boss' brother running loose on the streets. He was such a sweet shy thing that I couldn't resist. I took him home and he has been my companion ever since.

Dog #1 - puppy from an unwanted litter and I wanted a puppy (she is now 10yrs old!). The matriarch of the pets in the house - this dog would take a bullet for me.
Dog #2 - to be a companion to dog #1 - and because I read an article about a high kill shelter and wanted to give another dog a home. Sweetest dog...
Dog #3 - has dilute alopecia (my DD10 has alopecia) and was nearly hairless when we got him - he has become best buds with DD. Loves her absolutely unconditionally.

Our house is full!

There has never been a time in my life when I didn't have a dog.

Husband/dad, moved out, one month later we chose our shelter dog. Been with us for 5 years now. When we got him-told everyone i had a new man in my life, one that was always happy to see me, ate what I put in front of him and didn't complain about it, and never had unkind and abusive words. Laying at my feet right now. I wouldn't be with out our Shadow.

I got our sweetie, a Maltese, 1.5 years ago at 3 months as a companion for my dd because we thought we were moving. Well we didn't move but she has definately filled a void in our family. We love her to no end!!!

I've had dogs all my life and when my ex and I were married, we had several. After our divorce, dd and I were in an apartment and I promised her that when we moved into a house again, we could get another dog.

Oh, yeah, she remembered and nagged me into getting Sunny, our beautiful golden retriever, from the Humane Society. DH and I love her to pieces and when dd mentioned that she'd like to take Sunny after she graduates from college, I told her she had to get her own dog--she can't have mine. :lmao: Of course, she's welcome to visit Sunny whenever she likes.
