needs lens suggestion

My son just bought a nikon D5100 for his girlfriend. He got the body only, hoping to get the nikon 18-105 lens. Everyone has this lens back ordered, checked all local stores without success.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternate lens with similiar zoom and price?

He saw some lens available in "white box" and "imported" on B&H for the same price as the gold box USA warranteed. Does this make much difference? Is there a quality difference between the white box and gold box?

White box is usually boxed to sell with a kit, that's it. Imported is gray market. It's the same lens but may or may not have the full US warranty on it. On the B&H site they have really good information on the gray market items that explain all the details.
