With all that's going on in Florida, I feel almost selfish asking for this:

My MIL (well, more or less because my BF and I have been together for almost 8 years) is in surgery as I type this.

She's diabetic and had a black spot on her toe which progressed to the top of her foot turning black, leg swelling, etc. I'm not sure of the timeframe from onset to when we found out last nght. Anyway, she's in surgery and most likely will lose at least a toe and the top of her foot...if not more.

She needs all the well wishes she can get.

On top of being a nurse by profession, she also cares for her husband who has MS and is basically bedridden. What's going to happen to each of them remains to be seen.

Please send well wishes!

Thank you!

Thhinking of you and hoping for the best!

Thanks to everyone. Just talked to my BF...MIL is out of surgery. She only lost a toe, part of the bone and a "v" of skin...oh, and some tendons and stuff. Better than everyone expected. She'll need skin grafts and some rehab, but she should be okay, although they say this could re-occur.

Doctor said she knew about this for over a week and if she had gone to the hospital right away (instead of putting her husband first and taking care of him) this could've been avoided.

Thanks again for the well wishes.

Hope she heals well. P and PD sent. By the way, I'm squeamish :faint: but the post wasn't too graphic.

Glad to hear she came out of it that well (you know what I mean, comparitively). Prior to my mom's developing dementia, she was a pedorthist, and I would certainly hope her doctor sends her to one. They can do some amazing things, like creat shoe inserts that have the toe spots filled in, which makes re-learning how to walk MUCH easier and they have a much more normal gait post-toe loss.

BTW-That's not being selfish at all! Your poor MIL! If anything though, I bet she's learned not to put things off!

I've never heard of a pedorthist. Interesting.

She lost her "ring finger" toe. I've heard if you lose your pinky toe it's very hard to walk, but does it follow that after ANY toe loss there's problems? This is all new to me.

It amazes me how much info I can get on these boards!

Unfortunately, she's the type of person who puts EVERYONE else first, so I doubt she'll learn from this experience.

Thanks again!

Pedorthists make custom innersoles as well as custom shoes for people with all sorts of problems. I'm not sure about that particular toe, as I had assumed it would be a pinky or big toe....I think it's still hard, just not as big of a deal. I'll ask my mom, but honestly I'm not sure she'll remember....
