So, DH and I are not really into gadgets. I think he likes them, but he would rather spend money on something else. He hasn't ever had a cell phone and I would like him to have one. Especially since his new client thought he was joking and crazy when he told her he did not own one. I am currently on my parent's family plan, because I don't really use on either. So for $10 a month, we can add another person to the plan. Does anybody have any recommendations for a Verizon phone? If you want a Blackberry or like the Droid, do you have to get a different package that allows you to connect to the internet? My head is spinning from all the options out there. Thanks!

Hi I am currently researching phones. You can look at verizonwireless.com to check out plans. they also have forums there. As far as I understand it if you want the droid or blackberry there is a $29.99 data plan mandatory. If you want a 'regular phone' that does web browsing you can get on the connect plan and not have to pay that data plan. I would suggest you look at the website. You can click on what you are looking for and it will come up with options. Also depending on your workplaces you may get a discount. good luck

The $10 a month additional line is for a phone line only. Data plans are more. The salesman did not mention that to me and I found out when the next month's bill came, the additional line was $19.99. I also had to pay for a family data plan. It ended up costing more than 33% more a month for me to add the data, so we went back to the basic family select plan.

You can dial 611 from your Verizon cell phone to talk to a representative about upgrading. I find it easier to call than to go to the local store.

I suggest you go to www.howardforums.com that is a large forum for cellphone users. They have the carriers seperated, and have each manufacturer boards in each carriers..

i.e. VERIZONWIRELESS/LG or NOKIA, or etc...

good resource for tips, hints, hacks, etc..

I have verizon and the plan we use is the family share plan with 750 minutes. The original contract is $60 a month, $10 for each additional phone line. If you want unlimited texting it is an additional $5 per phone, if you want a data plan (for a blackberry, or any type of internet) it is an additional $30 a month.

To get an additional phone for the plan, is sometimes free....depending on what type of phone you would want.

Thank you for all the information! This helped simplify things a lot! We'll just take this gadget thing in baby steps :goodvibes

I have Verizon. I don't do texting and rarely will I send a photo so I have the cheapest plan out there ($39.99 a month for 450 min a month). If your husband isn't planning on having any internet access or texting, just get him a basic phone. Usually you can get good deals and possibly a free phone.

By the way, my husband doesn't have a personal cell phone either :) He has a blackberry for work but they monitor it so he can't use it after hours.

We just upgraded and added the kids to our plan on Sunday. They do not have an unlimted text plan for $5, or for any price really. You can add "unlimited" textings but it's about $20 a month. Data plans are extra so we didn't get them, no web surfing for us. We have the friends and family plan with 4 lines, unlimited text/pic/video messages, we added friends and family so the girls can make calls without using minutes (you can assign landlines and cell lines). We got 4 new phones, the girls' are Samsung Intensity, full QWERTY keypad, good functional phones that cost us $19.99 for BOTH phones. DBF and I got LG EnV3s. So far I really like them, mine was free, his was $49.99. So for $70 we got 4 new phones...not bad IMO. DBF did look at the Droid and I did look at the Chocolate but we decided against it because we didn't want to get the data plans. Good luck!!

Since he has never had one before and you don't know if he'll even use it, I'd suggest getting a basic cheap phone (mine was free when I signed up).

Now that I know what I would use, I'm planning on upgrading when my contract is up in June.
I've started looking at the Verizon website and checking out the forums so I can get the best fit for the kids and I. (DH has his own Iphone which I don't want).

Good luck. Cell phone contracts can get confusing.

We have the family share plan (2 lines), 700 share minutes, DH has unlimited email for $5 month (no web surfing), I have V Cast V Pak - unlimited- for $15 month (this is email and web surfing). DH just paid our bill today and with everything, including taxes, it was $103. Not bad. Oh, we are with Verizon.
