Need to vent

The original poster wasn’t even in Disney yet she was worried about people there taking pictures without masks on. We are never going to be able to control thousands of other people’s behavior in a theme park. So I’m going to have a great time on our trip without worrying about if someone takes off a mask for a picture. If you’re going to stress about it the whole time then I wouldn’t go.

Yes and then instead of telling that to the OP you quoted my post and tried attacking me when essentially I said to worry about yourself not others... and explained that Disney's current policies allow for masks off if stationary with food or drink...

And yet by population Florida is number 25 in deaths by covid, and NY is number 2 even with drastic lock downs So I’d say Florida is doing something right.
if you’re worried people won’t have masks on every second at Disney then don’t go. If you are going to spend your entire trip judging other people then stay home
NY was hit hard initially and then drove their numbers down. I wouldn't read too much into the totals:

555051

I'm editing this post to say that I agree with Dakota731... Just like I don't let myself get worked up about smokers smoking outside the smoking areas, or people sneaking in alcohol, when I go I worry about myself and my family (where I have a little bit of influence); and let the people in charge worry about whether something is worth enforcing or not.

Regardless of personal opinions, the Disney rules are face masks must be worn at all times, except when dining or swimming. There is nothing about a 5-minute, or even a 1-minute rule that says guests can take them off for pictures.

People can discuss how they wish it would be if they were king for a day, but to go with the intention of disregarding the rules is just wrong.

Face Coverings

Face coverings are required for all Guests (ages 2 and up) and Cast Members, including those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Please bring your own face coverings and wear them at all times, except when dining or swimming. You may remove your face covering while actively eating or drinking, but you must be stationary and maintain appropriate physical distancing.

All face coverings (whether disposable or reusable) must:
  • Be made with at least 2 layers of breathable material
  • Fully cover the nose and mouth and secure under the chin
  • Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • Be secured with ties or ear loops and allow the Guest to remain hands-free
At this time, based on guidance from health authorities, neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas and face coverings containing valves, mesh material or holes of any kind are not acceptable face coverings.

Costume masks are also not considered appropriate and are prohibited from being worn, in alignment with our existing rules.

Face coverings may have an integrated transparent plastic panel to aid in viewing the wearer’s mouth. These face coverings must:

  • Be a fabric face covering featuring a solid plastic panel containing no openings that is attached to the fabric on all sides using tight knit stitching
  • Meet all face covering requirements listed above
The use of face coverings is not a substitute for physical distancing.

Disney allows masks to be removed for brief periods for pictures( not on rides) and while stationary& eating/ drinking.
My understanding is in the parks this is not correct. Unless you are seated and eating/drinking or in one of the relaxation areas, the mask is to be on all the time.
That is why the photographers will not take your picture if your mask is off and you will not get ride photos if someone in your car does not have their mask on.

In many things I would agree with you. With co-Vid, definitely not.
You wear a mask to prevent you from giving it to someone else (especially if you are not knowingly a carrier), unfortunately not so much to protect yourself. The data is very clear on this.
So being around someone not wearing a mask, even if you are wearing one, could put you at risk. Your wearing a mask is much better than not wearing one, but still better for both of you to be wearing one.

I do not see how you are agreeing with Dakota 731 with these statements. Please read my posts.

Dakota 731 is saying the original poster is worried. The original poster never said that.

Second, Dakota 731 is not making statements solely about Disney World. There is an insensitive statement about the tragic number of deaths in New York.

Last, the general concern with others not wearing masks is the potential that the nonmaskers will infect others. People are worried that they themselves will get infected as well as they are worried that a lack of mask wearing will overall continue the spread, therefore causing Disney to have to be “half shutdown” longer.

Hope that is helpful.

Thank you. A lot of people don't seem to understand this. I see a lot of people say "if you're scared of covid, you can wear a mask, but I don't have to wear one." That's not how it works.

I agree with this portion of what she wrote:

I can only be responsible for my actions. I'm not going to get on a plane to go to WDW at this time because I don't want to spend a lot of money and be in a confined airplane with people that might not wear their masks or clean their hands (canceled my March trip), but I can go to Disneyland, and if it turns out that I'm uncomfortable with how others are acting, I'll remove myself from that environment. I will wear my mask, stay my distance from others, use hand sanitizer, and not worry about what the other people are doing, unless I feel that I can't maintain social distancing. I have various friends that have been going to Downtown Disney and enjoying themselves while I'm staying at home. None of them have reported getting Covid.

So I guess that’s where my third point comes into play. I am sympathetic to those who are frustrated that the people not wearing masks will continue the spread and keep Disneyland shut down longer.
Well one thing is for sure- we all hope that we will not have the need for threads like these in the near future.
Thank you for the dialog.

Guy across the street from me, younger guy, the other day was out front shoveling his front walk, during a rather heavy snowfall, all by himself, not a person within 1500 feet, and wearing a face mask.

Maybe the snow is a super spreader, not sure.

Or he wanted to cover his face because he was cold? I use a full head face cover when going out in snow. Also to add.. others not following the rules this time can get you sick even if you do everything you can to stay safe. Masks protect others not so much yourself. So get with the program wear the mask or don't go. Thems the rules.

What on earth does this have to do with following Disney’s mask rules?

Nothing.

I'm a rule follower, especially when it comes to issues where my decisions can have an actual impact on others. This has been one of the many difficult things about this pandemic is the people who think that rules don't apply to them. Plus, many people can be really rude about it when confronted and asked to follow the rules.

This is a hard time for everyone and yeah, masks aren't great to wear at Disney. But it's what we have to do to get through and when you see people deciding that the rules don't apply to them, it's natural to feel angry and annoyed.

I’m not sure who will read this but I need to vent a little too. I’m scared of covid and I’m sick of covid.....and I’m sick of being scared of covid. I’ve followed every rule for this entire time. We skipped Christmas and Thanksgiving with our families, we order curbside as much as possible, we take vitamin D, we wear N95 masks covered by cloth masks, etc. We have been doing our part to stop the spread since last year. When I read someone‘s comment that says “if you’re scared stay home” it’s very frustrating because I have been staying home but occasionally I have to go into a store for one thing or another. I went into Target last night because I had to buy something for my daughter for school. At the front door there was a maskless lady who yelled to others in her party “they’ll give us a mask”. So, she’s at the entrance of the store taking a chance of spreading covid by yelling. WTH. How can people act this way?

When I say I’m scared of covid I mean that I’m terrified. I have a husband and daughter that I love beyond measure and I don’t want to see them get sick and suffer. We aren’t in a high risk category but plenty of healthy people have died from covid. You never know how your body will respond.

I honestly don’t want to care if you wear a mask. I’m not some kind of lifelong hall monitor but when your actions affect my family then your actions matter to me. If we were in Tony’s Town Square and you lit a cigarette I wouldn’t pay much attention to that. I wouldn’t like it but I know that I can probably survive secondhand smoke for a half hour....but if you’re in line for Soarin and your mask is under your nose then you can make me sick. Am I jealous of the fact that you’re not scared of covid? Yes and no. I’m jealous that you can live your life without fear but I’m not jealous of the character trait that allows you to value your comfort more than the health of others. I’m not jealous of that at all....and I’m not jealous of the karma associated with that kind of behavior.

The only thing worse than the fact that people won’t wear masks is that SOME of the same people are skipping the line to get a vaccine. Now they can spread it but they can’t get sick or die of covid. Hypocritical much?

I respect a company’s rules, and when there are mask requirements my family wears them. However my point is that you will never be able to control thousands of tourists’ behavior at a theme park, so if you will be stressed out your entire trip I wouldn’t go. Even if you had 100% mask compliance you can still catch the virus - spoken as a mom of two health care workers to whom that happened - so you have to weigh the risk versus the reward for your family.
I saw on another blog where a mom of a tall 20 month old had several people tell her to put a mask on her child, and one person even called over a CM to complain! So I just think if someone is that concerned about policing the other park guests, then I don’t see how they would enjoy your trip anyway.

I agree that we will never be able to control the behavior of others. I’m so sorry that your children had covid. I know that it had to be scary.

I‘m only replying on this thread in hopes that maybe someone in the anti mask group will understand that those of us who are frustrated by their behavior are really just scared. I don’t really know how to articulate it but I’ll try. I’m scared of heights. If I were going to ride Hulk at Universal then I would be terrified by the time it was my turn to get on the ride. The fear is so overwhelming that it’s the only thing that I can focus on. I’m visibly shaken by the time its my turn....and because of all of that I just don’t ride Hulk. Easy peasy.

Now, when I go in Target and see people without a mask I feel the same was as I would in line for Hulk. Maybe it’s worse because riding Hulk won’t kill me. People are dismissive of those fears and they say to just stay home....but the truth is that we have stayed home for nearly a year. We are all afraid of something. I‘m hopeful that people will think of the way that they feel when faced with their triggers.....thats how we feel when we see them without a mask. I’m not some bitty that is constantly judging other people but in this case their behavior could kill someone and it would be so easy to change that behavior. The constant state of fright or flight is miserable. I know that we can get covid even if everyone is wearing a mask but the risk (since we are only interacting with them in passing) is minimal.

If I truly believed that covid would go away in six months or a year then I could stay home and make that sacrifice but I don’t think that it’s going anywhere. It will be a very long time until my family can be vaccinated. Sometimes we have to go out to get something that we need and sometimes we have to go out to salvage what little bit of mental health we have left. It’s overwhelming.

Dakota 731 is saying the original poster is worried. The original poster never said that.
Then I’m really confused because if she wasn’t worried then why would she care if someone took off their mask for a minute to take a photo? Then it just sounds like a case of “why do you get to take a picture when I don’t” instead of health and safety concerns. We all just have to make decisions for our own families, but there is never going to be a guarantee that you won’t get get covid at Disney even if masks are worn 24/7. We still touch stuff, our kids stick their fingers in their mouths or up their nose and, strangely enough covid can still spread when we are eating our lunch and dinner
