Need to rent a car, but don't have a credit card? Who takes debit?

Hi there,

I don't have any credit cards and need to rent a car. I know this is a problem. I have debit cards but last time we rented from I think enterprise? They put a $400 hold on our debit card and did not release it until 1 week after we brought the car back!!

Anyone know of a rental company that will accept debit cards and does not put a huge hold on your card for a long time?

I also have a pay pall card, does anyone know if they treat that as a debit card or a credit card?

I am sure you will get responses to this but I think you should call the agencies you plan on renting from and get their answer.

I use my debit card at Hertz all the time but I am in their #1 Gold Club. Your debit card has to be in your profile before they will let you use the debit card.

Alamo, no hold on debit card, but you must have a return flight ticket.
Budget, call for rules.
Dollar, they cover that on their website.
