Need to convert slides and 8mm to DVD

Looking at Costo prices it is about $19 for the first 50 slides and $.29 for each additional slides.

For 8mm it is $17.99 for the first 150 feet, $.11 per foot per additional foot.

My parents have tons of slides (and I mean tons) and a fair bit of 8mm sitting in their basement that I would like to convert to DVD. Any ideas on someplace cheaper? I am probably going to pay for some myself and they will do the rest but it will get pretty pricey with the amount we have to do.

Does anyone know of anywhere that might be cheaper but still do a good job?

That is what dad gets for putting all our pictures in slide format growing up.

I really want to show hubby all the WDW pictures and film from when I was little without having to lug all the stuff over here to see it (yes my parents still have the projector for slides and film).

My sister bought my dad one of the slide scanners from Costco last Christmas. I believe it was around $150. He scans his slides and then saves them to the computer. Then he can save them to a dvd. I've seen his scans and they are pretty good for 1960's slides.

As for 8mm, my husband has spent the last few years sending his family's 8mm to a company in AZ to convert. He has done about 10 reels at a cost of over $300 but he has them converted to digital video, not dvd. Then he imports them in to our computer to edit and saves them to a dvd. It's not cheap! Costco would be a lot cheaper.

I copied my grampa's slides by projecting them on a screen and taking a picture of it. (Used a manual camera, played with settings til I got it right.) I had it set up on a tripod, so it was click the slide projector, click the camera, repeat.

I have a dodad for scanning slides on my scanner, but it took forever to do and the quality was not as good.
