Need super creative ways to save on Alimentum & Begging for Similac checks!

My daughter who is now 7 was on Nutramigen. My husbands insurance wouldn't cover it, no matter how the ped. wrote a prescription and we couldn't get WIC either. I know so so expensive.

I would buy it from ebay , plus as others have stated, get samples. I got samples everytime DD had to see her doctor. Plus he asked their rep for an extra case and the ped. gave it all to me. Every little bit helps.

Just a side note, whatever my DD's reason she couldn't tolerate regular formula, she is fine now. No allergies, no lactose intolerance. Good Luck!

Several years ago I was a manager of a grocery store and there were certain formulas that were covered by WIC not matter what your income was. I think it was Alimentum and Nutramigen, I am not sure that this is the way it still is but it would not hurt to call your local health department. I remember a doctors kids were on this and they used WIC.

I had not heard of that. I will definitely call. I had thought of talking to the two grocery stores here and asking them if they'd allow me to stack checks. If they get paid on them, I'm sure they wouldn't mind. Yesterday, I was able to use a Similac check, a $3 Similac coupon (thanks to whoever here told me that), and the grocery store's $3 off baby product coupon. We got the formula for $17!

I went by yesterday since I was in the area of my ped's office (40 mins away so I can't just drop in like I'd like to) and they were completely out of all formula samples. She didn't know when they would get any more in which is a bummer because I go on Thursday for her 4m appt. I also asked about insurance and she said I'd definitely have to call my provider and ask them because they had never heard of ins covering it. She was the front desk person, so she may not know everything. But I'm afraid this is the case.

Move to Canada. It's free, the government pays for it here.

It's not really free, just free to you at the time. You are paying for it through higher taxes, and so is everyone else in Canada. Nothing is free. Someone has to pay for it. All the money that "the Government" had is got got from someone.

You're quite right, Canadians all contribute to a national health insurance program just like many Americans contribute to an insurance program. We do know that it's not really "free" but we appreciate not having to pay out of pocket at the time.

I hesitate to mention this, because sometimes people don't take it well, but have you considered relactating, given your baby's sensitivities? I don't know your situation, but sometimes mothers who have weaned early or who did not start out breastfeeding can rebuild a milk supply. Even partial breastfeeding would save you some money and perhaps help your baby with her digestive problems.

Ten coupons for $4.44 ($3.50 plus $.44 postage and $.50 "admin fee" for a total of $4.44) with a value of $50 isn't a bad deal! You can get as many as you need (10, 20, 30... although you have to use them this month as they expire 2/28/11) and if you found a store that lets you stack this with other coups you could save a good bit of money. I've used this site before and they send what they promise.

Can you call the nursery at the hospital where you delivered? They can talk to the formula rep or have them get in contact with you...or they(or peds) may have formula that is getting ready to expire and they could give it to you...

Have you looked at the Swap Spot on thebump.com? They have an area for people to trade checks and other baby coupons. I use Similac, too, so I can't really help but I've had a lot of luck trading Gerber and Enfamil for Similac checks.

Similac only sends me checks for NeoSure, the formula for premie babies?! I'm not sure why. I've been waiting until I have $10 or $15 worth and I send them to someone on their premie boards.

Our dd was on Nutramigen about three years ago. I know this is a odd place to find a sale, but Babys R US was the cheapest I found it. I always thought of that place costing more, but I would stock up when I went there with my coupon checks.

DD was on this as well and that's where I bought hers, I never dreamed insurance might cover it! It was a while back so probably they didn't do it then. She also didn't have a milk allergy but it seemed to help her gastro troubles. We jokingly called it "liquid gold". My friend's son was put on it and she started breast feeding, she said she just couldn't pay that much.

My DD5 still has a dairy and egg allergy (and acid reflux- she was the WORST baby). I hope your child out grows it. However, there is hope! We signed up ALL of our family members at the formula website and were able to get extra coupons. They also sent samples out the first time. We used our work address too. I also looked on Ebay and bought a bunch that was close to expiration dates. She drank so much of it that it wasn't a big deal, we used it before it EVER expired.

As DD was older we also learned most soy products are produced on the same equipment that processed regular milk products. I made her very sick buying Trader Joe's soy yogurt and not knowing it was produced on shared equipment. Silk is the only brand we have found that doesn't share and DD5 doesn't get sick now.

Tomorrow is her first allergist appt. Normally he doesn't see them that young, but he's making an exception. I'm not sure she actually has a milk allergy. Since she's been on Alimentum her skin hasn't really improved. I'm thinking now she just has very sensitive skin like her sister. Sister has dermographia (google it - so weird! ) so I'm thinking she may just be similar. What is causing the sensitive skin, IDK. Guess we'll see. I don't think he'll let me get off the Alimentum but I sure would love to.

I am going to keep exploring other avenues of getting it cheaper. Never thought to ask the Nursery at the hospital.

And I have not been to thebump lately. I quit visiting - can't stand the hateful biddies on there. But I will stop by to check on that swap. Thanks for the tip.

When I was looking for a double stroller on the chicago craigslist I saw a lady selling the special formula you needed. It was $9 a can. That was about a week or so ago. I only looked at the listing because I had never heard of that type of formula before!

A lot of people are willing to ship on craigslist. My sister bought a crib set and then they discontinued it so she couldnt buy the accessories (carpet, light switch cover, hamper etc.) She found someone selling a complete set with a ton of accessories in Denver, and they agreed to ship it if she paid first. It worked out really well.

We went through an Alimentum period with my son. I found that buying it in lots on ebay worked out cheapest per can. I'm also sending you a PM.

my kids were both on nutramagen which is the same thing but made by enfamil. I found that using the checks on the small premade cans worked out the cheapest for me. I would look into buying checks and then using them on the small cans. There is normally no size limitation which made the formula a much better deal!!

Just a quick update.

DD has the early signs of allergies - eczema, dermographia, etc. She is just predisposed to having allergies apparently. So he wants her to be on Alimentum or Nutramigen until 18 months old (I thought 6 more months but no, 12!!!) and wait on food as long as possible. He said she doesn't need table food at all the first year as Alimentum is enough (for the price, I damn sure hope so ). But once she starts eating, she's on a strict introduction diet.

I have been talking with my insurance and damn is that a run-around or what!?! They need one thing, the doctor needs another, they transfer you 20 times. So anyway, from what I understand if the allergist will write it up as medically necessary then they will cover it ONLY AFTER they approve it and I meet my deductible. Which I've spent 0 this year so yippie skippie.

I have been thinking of ways to meet it and DH getting the old snip-snip might get us there. I wonder what he will say about that...

Many moons ago...when just a baby, my child was on Nutramagen ...literally the only thing he could use that did not cause allergic reactions and severe projectile vomiting. It was a nightmare before Nutramagen.
No insurance would cover it. It lasted a really long time, felt like forever, but was really until just before 2! Despite the pains of paying for it, it was so worth it.
I wish I had been in the Dis back then to learn all these tips to get coupons/discounts/help.
