Need some "thermals" recommendations!!!

OP here. So after talking with my son, it's not thermal underwear that he's looking for. He's looking for a pair of "overall" pants that he can wear over his jeans. He says that they either zip up the sides or button up or could even be velco.

I'm assuming they'd have to be good in the elements (rain, snow, etc).

Any suggestions on those?

Carhardtt makes two kinds that are very popular; one is a full jumpsuit, and the other is bibs, like so: http://www.carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/...10101&storeId=10051&productId=32174&langId=-1. Both styles are in the same Extremes line.

This online shop has a large line of them at pretty good prices: http://www.overallwarehouse.com/Insulated-Overalls/4462/4450-4451-4462/Dept

It's a good idea to add spray-on water repellant finish to the duck-fabric ones; my Dad always did that. (Same stuff you spray on tents.) If you have to work in rain the duck fabric types can soak up some moisture otherwise.

You forgot silk. Heavier-weight silk is very warm, very durable, and still breathes against the skin. Definitely the most comfortable choice.

I've got some thin silk. Not bad, but it gets pricey when you get to heavier weights. Also, it doesn't dry as fast as synthetics or wool. Dry fabric insulates better than wet fabric. Of course 100% cotton is the worst when it gets wet. Part of it is that moisture interferes with cotton's loft, as well as making it feel slightly abrasive. Cotton is also a pretty poor insulator even when dry. So if you're working up a sweat when it's cold, then you don't want the layers closest to the skin to be cotton.

Of course almost everything comes down to a personal preference. A lot of people I know try different things and wear different layers on different days.

Carharts or generic equivalent. Go with bibs & a coat. Coveralls are too restrictive IMO. Any farm supply store will have exactly what he needs.
