Need some quick help with laundering flannel sheets

Yes, my dear, normally-sane son adores flannel sheets, even when it's a billion degrees outside like it is now. LOL My mother was nice enough to get him some new ones to replace his old hand-me-downs, and the new ones just showed up.

But how do I launder them the first time?? I did a quick Google, and in several places it said to wash them on cold to warm, use no detergent, add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle, and use no dryer sheets. So here are my questions:

1.) Should I wash in cold or warm? (The sheets are white with red stripes, and solid flag blue.)

2.) Can I use vinegar *and* fabric softener? Because I can't imagine sheets of any kind without fabric softener. (I've tried the vinegar-only thing before, and maybe it's our water or something but it just doesn't do the trick to my liking. And I miss the smell of softener.)

3.) Same goes for dryer sheets -- anyone know why it recommends not using them? Because the sheets just don't smell as good without them!

Thanks for any help!! :grouphug:

I've just washed them in the washing machine like I do anything else :confused3. Personally, I would want to get the sizing out, so using laundry detergent and vinegar for that then I would use a dryer sheet so they were soft and fluffy and not like sandpaper.

That's what I was thinking... seems pointless to not use detergent! What do you think about using vinegar and liquid fabric softener? (My machine has one of those center dispensers for the softener.)

Tell your son he's not nuts - I use them year round too! :cloud9:

I just use plain old Tide in cold water and a dryer sheet in the dryer.

I always wash my towels with vinegar and then use a dryer sheet in the dryer. I used to use the center dispenser for liquid fabric softener until I discovered that it was spotting my clothes so I stopped. I wouldn't use that based on my experience but your dispenser may be fine.
