Hi
Earlier in the year we went to Disneland Paris, and our little boy started to collect the disney pins.
Any information you could give us as to how to trade pins would be greatly appreciated.
Are some more collectable pins worth 2 or 3 ordinary ones, or is it purely a one pin for one pin trade? (Just trying to work out how the folks with books full of pins collected them. Did they actually buy 1000's of them!!)
Many thanks

Hi, and welcome to the DIS and the Collectors Board. :)

To start with your last question, yes, we have bought 1000's of pins. Of course, these have been purchased over time. DW Lauri and I have been collecting since our honeymoon at WDW nearly 3 years ago, and many other people have been collecting Disney pins longer than that.

The law of supply and demand definitely influences pin trading. Some pins are clearly one for one trades, such as a common rack pin for another common rack pin. Others it's not so clear. The Stinky Pete from WDW (pinpics #3424) was a common rack pin but is in high demand and someone trading it would not trade it for a common rack pin. Also, the Black Heritage Celebration 2000 (pinpics #3888) is a LE 1000, but not in high demand. I have a couple in my trader books, and if I offered someone one for a Wet Paint (pinpics #3830, also LE 1000) they would look at me like I was nuts!

It's not always possible to trade pins one for one. Not a lot of pins are in as high demand as Wet Paint, so something like that would definitely warrant trading two or more pins for, to even things out.

You will see Pinpics referred to a lot. Pinpics.com is an unofficial collector-run web directory of Disney pins (some Olympic pins, but mostly Disney). One great way to judge the tradability of pins is to look up on pinpics how many members are trading vs. how many members are wanting.

Sometimes, it just comes down to how much you (or your son) want a certain pin. In that case, it does pay to educate yourself on the different pins so that you don't get cheated in a trade.

Hope this answers some of your questions. Above all, remember one thing about pin trading ....

Have fun! :)

Many thanks for the help. Will be trying out somes trades with DS next year at WDW
