Hi All,

I am looking for some advice on getting my son a 504 plan for his ADHD. He won't qualify for and IEP since it really doesn't infere with his school work. But he lots of issues with self control and behaviors issues. We had great teachers for 1st and 2nd grade but he will going into 3rd grade in Sept and I don't know which teacher he will have.

Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated, I don't know much about them. Is the process similiar to an IEP? I am familiar to that process, my daughter has one for her develepmental delays.

For very uncomplicated ADHD cases a 504 sometimes is adaquate, but if there are any social skills deficits, sensory issues or non linear ef characteritics then an IEP is a must. A full evaluation for spectrum chracteristics is very important.

Yes, I would definitely go for a full neuropsych testing to rule out anything more than a 504. It is easier to get more services and scale them back if they are not necessary than it is to get a 504 and then ask for more services if 504 isn't enough.

So what should my first step be? Request and an IEP eval? He has some sensory issues, loud noises; being hot sets him off; his clothing can't have tags or buttons or be rough, it will make him so upset.

But I didn't think that an IEP would help him because *inside* the classroom, he is doing well. But *outside* like at recess or at assembly, he has a really hard time.

I am confused.

IEPs are not just for acedemic issues but also for funtional issues throughout the school enviroment. Yes you need a full IDEA evaluation which should include a sensory profile and enviromental audit and a social skills profile using a modern tool like WPS SRS questionare.

You can ask for an evaluation for your child if you have any concerns. I agree with an earlier poster that it is easier to scale back on services later than it is to increase if the need arises. I would simply say that you have some concerns and you would like those concerns evaluated and discussed with the educational team. IMHO, an IEP is often more revered and respected than a 504.

ember that even if it does not affect his school work, under IDEA, if his behaviors interfere with the other children's access to FAPE, then an IEP is appropriate.

For my youngest, meds worked just enough to bring him under qualifying for an IEP. Prior to meds, he had almost 8 days of suspensions (first semester of 1st grade), so we had the documentation for the approval.

Thank you for all the information! I will definately be requesting a full evaluation for him.

Every school and every CST is different, but I can tell you my experience. My son has ADHD very similar to what you are saying your son is like. My son has been on Concerta for 6 years now. We just requested a meeting with the CST and because he is on meds, they just needed to get some info from the dr and then they worked on a 504 plan with me. It worked really well. Since then, I have decided to homeschool, but that is for other reasons. Good luck with your findings.
