need some ideas

I missed a meeting so I have been volunteered to put on a science fair display. In other words I need to put together some science projects that can be done in front of everybody.

I am a nervous wreak about this. I am very shy.

I was thinking of doing a volcano, but need more ideas.

The science fair is Tuesday April 12 at 1:30pm. This is the first time my girls and I had anything to do with the science fair.

You could always do a sensory bar. Touch: Have a student close their eyes and have to name the object inside of a box with a hole cut out. Then taste: this one I used bakers chocolate and milk chocolate to show how taste buds work. Smell: smell boxes and see how many the students could get right. Sight: There is an optical illusion with a red and a green bird with a black cage between them, if you focus on one bird versus the other you will the negative image when you look at the cage. Sound: This was Montessori Method, but there are rods you can make with rice, beans, pebbles, etc. in them. Make two of each and jumble them up, let the student try to match them based on the sound coming from the tube.

How about a model of the nuclear reactor in Japan. You can demonstrate how they use a containment enclosure to protect against leaking radiation, and/or demonstrate what they will do to fix the current problems. You can probably find models that work at your local hobby store.

I don't really have any ideas. I just couldn't help my curiosity. How did you get volunteered? I'm thinking I'd say, "Sorry. That won't work for me."

The homeschool association I am part of requires me to be on at least 2 committees. One of the committees I choose was the science fair committee.

My girls and I have never been part of a science fair and thought it could be fun. This is the first time our homeschool association had a science fair so it is new to all of us.

The person that was in charge of the experiment lab dropped out at the last minute. Last night we had a meeting, but I was unable to make it. Nobody wanted to take on this extra job on top of their current job. My current job was to make the award certificates and those are already made. The other members thought that since my job was done and I was not there to say no I could do this added job.

I thought about saying no, but I really want this science fair to be great for children. It will be hard on me, but the children are worth it.

I am also trying to teach my youngest to face her fears. She is watching to see how I handle this situation since I am shy and have anxiety issues. My daughter is also very shy with anxiety issues. Her doctor is worried about her being so scared of things.

Shouldn't the kids be doing the experiments? That is how our science fairs work. Don't do a volcano, EVERYONE does a volcano-plus they are a mess to clean up. Do something interactive like setting up a battery and some electrodes and having kids connect them to different objects to see what conducts electricity-use potatoes, aluminum, wood, fabric, rubber, etc.

Since you were "volunteered" you need to "delegate" some of these wonderful projects to the rest of the committe/group. Good Luck!

The children are each doing their own project and written report. They will also meet with the judges separately.

These experiments are just something for the children to watch while waiting their turn with the judges.

blow up a balloon. Put vinegar in a plastic bottle and stick a deflated balloon with baking soda in it over the opening. The opening of the balloon has to be able to fit around the bottle. When you lift the balloon the bs drops out into the vinegar and the gases blow up the balloon.
