Hi All,

I need some help, I have been practising with my Canon 1100D with a 50mm lens but I need a new one and need it for our Disney trip - clearly the 50mm doesn't zoom but I do like the automatic focus. What would be a good lens for shooting in Disneyworld?

The 18-55 kit lens (version 2, with IS) is inexpensive, covers a range that is useful at WDW, and is actually a pretty good lens.

One of my friends suggested a 35mm 1.4f but being that she has never been to Disney she wasn't quite sure

You need to list the types of shots you want.

The nifty 50 is a decent lens, but it doesn't zoom, like you inferred in your OP. The 18-55, 55-250, and the 18-135 mentioned would all get you decent shots outdoor in good sunlight and even fireworks with a good tripod.

However, your friend mentioned a lens that is generally well known for providing good pictures on dark rides. You won't find one lens that is going to zoom and provide the best opportunity for dark ride photography. So, it depends on what you are more interested in, and/or how deep are your pockets. In reality, to get the array of pictures you probably desire is going to take two or three lenses, some of which are fairly expensive.

Different lenses serve different functions. There are "all-in-one" lenses like 18-250s, but they tend to make performance and size compromises, in order to achieve the all-in-one convenience.

So in terms of which lens would be good........

A 70-300.. something like the Tamron 70-300usd, is extremely good for shooting shows at Disney and shooting the safari at Animal Kingdom.

The 35/1.4 you mentioned, it great at shooting dark rides, as well as many "normal perspective" shots.

The 18-55 kit lens is very good for general walk-around outdoor shots... The 18-135 is very good, though it gives you more weight to carry... but gives you a bit of extra length, giving you more leeway for portraits and a bit of short telephoto reach.

The new Sigma 18-35 can also be a good landscape-oriented walk-around lens, as well as the only zoom lens that is also a very good dark ride lens.

As mentioned, something like the 18-250 would cover a vast focal length, reducing the need to change lenses. But weighs more, with lesser performance. Certainly can't shoot low light or dark rides with it.

And something like the Tokina 11-16 is an exceptional ultra-wide lens, useful for some types of landscapes, and some of the more interesting Disney shots you see. Tom Bricker is a big fan of ultrawide, so you can see his shots.

So it's really, what types of shots do you most want to focus on? What is your budget?

You can find plenty of the 18-55 II on eBay or maybe used at B&H or others. This probably the least expensive option. A 35 f1.4 is a nice lens but it is also kind of large/heavy and $$$. I rented one for the Halloween parade which brings up another idea: rent a lens to see if you like it.
