I was diagnosed last year as being allergic to a chemical found in many hand creams, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, etc., that chemical is isopropyl myristate. It causes my hands in particular to break out in little blisters that erupt and burst.....my fingers well, it is very painful and itchy. It also causes all my skin that it comes in contact with to be irritated. I am having a terrible time finding something that I can use, shampoo & condition. I tried the Clean & Clear and though it is free from the chemical, I don't like the results from it. Listed below (bottom paragraph) are the other names of this chemical or it's closely related cousins.

Here is what I'm asking - everyone please check your ingredients on your shampoo and conditioner and if it is free of these please post it. Bought some L'Oreal this weekend without thinking and my hands are a mess again, I am so tired of dealing with this. Usually have two little kids with me when shopping and standing and reading the ingredient list on every container is not an option.

Isopropyl Myristate and its Chemical Cousins
One of the worse offenders is a penetrating oil called isopropyl myristate, the major ingredient in a can of penetrating rust remover, Liquid Wrench. Isopropyl myristate helps cosmetics apply more smoothly and gives them a slicker, sheer feel. This particular penetrating oil is so aggressive that if left over night in a beaker will actually migrate over the top, down the sides and onto the table top. There are many chemicals similar to isopropyl myristate in cosmetics.

The most common are: isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl isothermal, putty stearate, isostearyl neopentonate, myristyl myristate, decyl oleate, octyl sterate, octyl palmitate and isocetyl stearate and PPG myristyl propionate. All must be avoided, as must other surfactants such as laureth 4.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Go here. This is drugstore.com's shampoo page for "natural brands." Some of these look like they might work for you (the Alba brand looks promising). When you click on a particular shampoo, go to the next tab that allows you to "View product packaging." There you can see all the ingredients.

I order from drugstore.com all the time. Usually free shipping, comparable prices, and after you order over and over again, the stuff you order gets cheaper.

Wow! That must be really tough. I checked my Arbonne hand cream, which is supposed to be made of all natural ingredients - yada yada yada, but it has myristyl myristate in it. Good luck.

I don't have a carton in front of me to check ingredients, but Jurlique products contain no chemicals. www.jurlique.com E-mail them before ordering and they will verify ingredients for you. I use their entire body and facial care line and it's great stuff! A bit pricey but worty it. I use teh sensitive skin facial care line, and it's been wonderful with my rosacea.

One other thought is the Burt's Bee's line.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I'll be checking out these to see if I can find something that will work.
