Need some basketball help here.......

Okay, I signed on as my 4th grade DD's basketball coach. There wouldn't be a team if I hadn't. I did play basketball in high school, but, well, that was a long time ago !!! Just wondering if somebody could suggest a good book or a good website for teaching these girl's the fundamentals/basics as well as some good ideas for drills and such!!

I did already contact the high school coach for some suggestions, but I don't know if/when he will get back to me, so I thought I would cover all my bases! Thanks!

My best suggestion would be to go to a bookstore and buy a book. Barnes and Noble has tons of good ones.....

As far as drills -

Two ball dribbling - developing the "off hand" at a young age will prove invaluable when they are older!

Form shooting - block, block and midlane - have them hold the ball in front with shooting hand underneath - bring it up to "shooting pocket" - pause then flick the wrist and shoot the ball (goal is a swish) without jumping.

These are the two drills that got our high school team to the state tourney last year (we coached the same group of kids from the time they were in 2nd grade).

Oh, I forgot..... have them shoot layups with their off hand. For example - left side of basket use left hand. No matter how ugly when they are young.... if you make them practice the proper footwork and TRY with that off- hand... as they grow and gain strength they will surprise themselves.

One no- no is letting them dribble 10 times for a layup. Have a goal of one dribble to get from the three point line to the block. Yes, they can do it. If you have to start with 2, fine, but no more. Some overachiever will try and try again until she does it and then everyone will want to.
