Need Some Advice

Hello, a friend and I are considering moving to the Orlando area. I have several reasons for moving there, the biggest reason being my love for all things Disney and maybe trying to work for the Main Mouse as a Cast Member. I would be leaving a lot of family and very close friends to do this, I was wondering if anyone out there has made a similar move (I'm coming from Missouri) and if it worked out or not. Thanks for any advice or experiences that you can share.

Welcome to the DIS, GD. If you do a board search here on the DIS, limited to the Community board, for Orlando and/or Florida, you should find a number of similar threads giving some ideas. Yes, we moved to Orlando, but primarily to escape the winters of the Northeast. We do like it here. The winters are wonderful. I think that some people move here primarily for their love of "all things Disney", and all in all, I think that's probably a mistake. Moving to Orlando to work for Disney as a company with a decent paying job is one thing. The problem is that most of their jobs are low paying hourly wages. But I think if you're looking to capture the "feeling" that you get from Disney when you're on vacation it's probably a mistake.

I am a fan of Disney, no doubt. However, I can tell you that living here and visiting Disney as a day guest is not the same as vacationing there. And I'm most certain that working there is a different ballgame altogether. I'd think long and hard on this type of decision before making the move. Best of luck with your decision.

Well, I think that it would be wonderful if working for Disney was the same as vacationing there, but unfortunately, it isn't. Like I said, even visiting as a day guest isn't even close to the "total Disney immersion" you get when you vacation there and stay on-site. Still, we enjoy going over to Disney, but we go far less than we did when we first moved here....in fact the longer we're here the less we get over there. Real life gets in the way I guess. Now we tend to head over primarily for events or for an occasional meal.

The other concern is that it's quite difficult to live on $14,000 a year. Even with a roommate you'd need a second job to survive...and what fun is there in that. Again, the OP may be thinking of going for a management job with The Mouse, and that's different.
