I teach during the school year and sometimes I work in the summer sometimes not. Dh was laid off most of this winter and I need some work on car so I decided to work. I live in a shore town and am working on a min-golf course. Was offered management but just wanted a pt summer job. The same day I was hire they hired a new mgr. I have a real clash with her. Can't put my finger on it but she seems sneaky. One time I saw her blame a kid for something I know she did, nothing big either. Another time I counted her drawer (there is alot of double checking in the system) and it was off by an amount that didn't make sense. Not a typical miscount error. I always think she's talking about people behind their backs too.
Because of the new mgr. I received no training. I was tossed right onto register and was responsible for a bunch of stuff that I didn't feel comfortable with. But I dealt with it and after a week or two I felt better. But one night that I was there the bank was off by $100. This is not kept locked during the day so anything could have happened. In fact one kid was caught in there getting out his check. You are not supposed to do this. There are security cameras around so I would think they would know what happened. I've asked them about this shortage a couple of times because I was the last person to count the bank before the shortage was discovered and I worked that whole morning. They keep saying their working on it.
Today I went in on a voluntary basis to help with a party. There were minor clashes with this mgr. who was not happy that a party was happening I guess. She is trying to assert authority in a bossy kind of way in a place that doesn't really require it. Finally I went to the general mgr. with my thoughts. Told him I couldn't put my finger on it but this mgr was making me uncomfortable. Told him I felt she was making mistakes and pinning it on other people. He said something to me about the bank shortage and then said my drawer was short $50. the other night. I don't know why it would be short but I asked him if I could have made some sort of error. I asked how they determine a shortage. Apparently it doesn't have to be money. It can be due to an inventory count or some other factors. But he's vague and is kind of like acting like I'm taking things. I just have a general feeling that things are wrong at the place and I might be getting blamed for stuff. This mgr is the sort to go around talking about you because she knows she is making mistakes.
DH wants me to quit. He sees trouble coming. I like the job and it pays better and is easier then most of the other summer jobs. In fact I may not be able to get another summer job at this point in the season. We won't starve but I will have to put off new tires for my car and will be scrimping for back to school clothes. Im not used to this politcal bs. I've always just had really casual jobs or run my own business. Any advice.

Well if it were me, and I wasn't desperate for the money, I'd quit. If you really need the income, start looking today for another job. When you find one, quit.

I think I would quit too, and I know something about scrimping for back to school. You could get balmed for something and then fired, which I would assume would hamper your ability to get a job next summer. I would also move to the midwest, school starts in two weeks here!

LOl, amen to that.
I already feel like I'm getting blamed for something. I'm not even sure what. For example people often ring things up in another persons drawer. Not a good thing, but it's how they do it if they are really busy. I was right there and somebody needed a drink. I rang it up. The cashier who's drawer it was said, hey my name's on that drawer and I"m responsible for it. It actually seemed like a huge over reaction. Now I"m thinking that the mgr is telling her I'm doing something wrong. I'm going to leave I just haven't figured out how to do it. I've maybe left a job twice in my life. If I just say this isn't the right job for me and quit they'll think I'm stealing things and looking to get out. If I give notice it might give her time to pin things on me. She might do that anyway by saying look she left. And maybe she'll take things that night.

School starts here Aug. 31. It would be tough to get a new job and quit a month later. Maybe some others with cash register experience can help you deal with the shortages, but I would document everything.

The problem is the troubles are vague. Now I wish I hadn't gone to the gen. mgr with them. She just acted in a bad way during the party. Now I'm concerned that the gen. mgr. will mention what I said and I have to work with this woman. So as far as documenting there is nothing really to document. Since there are security cameras all over the place it would be easy to prove that I took money. And I'm still employed there.
Also it was me and one other girl who ran the party. There was a grounds boy who helped clean up and one of the cashiers helped get them some drinks. The family gave a healthy tip. This mgr. took part of it for herself. It was offered to her by the other girl working the party, but mgr. should have turned it down. She did nothing for the party and she's a mgr.

I would quit. Especially if you distrust them. It isn't worth potentially bad references.

Tiggeroo....Ok if you have a funny feeling, I think you're probably right. Honest people don't get that unless something is really wrong. As far as speaking to the GM , you know what...if the funny money continues after you are gone, he will know the truth.. High cash business are a desireable place for theives to work. As far as notice goes, I was "old school" too, but employment is at will...you have the right to quit, and they have the right to fire you. I would tell the GM you would like to be removed from the schedule ASAP, you are not comfortable with 1) the attitude/behavior of the mgr, 2) the constant cash shortages are of concern to you too, but you don't want to stand by and have your creditibility ruined. As a teacher you have a lot more at stake than a summer job.

Good luck...cut back somewhere else for the last month...and best wishes.

PS my sister was polygraphed because someone else was shorting her drawer at work.

I would have quit the moment that they told me that being short is not just being short of money. I also would have asked about the cameras. They may have them there but do they have film in them?

I wasn't even thinking about the risk to my main job. I have to have a criminal background check done every 2 years. If it ever came back with any problem nobody would hire me. I'm president of a large sports booster club. Have to handle large sums of money there too. So my reputation is important to me. This is just a summer job. I'm trying to figure out how to leave. But I believe I'm going to go to him, explain the situation and ask to be removed from the schedule. If he already thinks I took money that's not going to change if I stay two more weeks. Perhaps he'll put something on the table that will give me the confidence to stay.

Please Go....., wish them good luck, and you'll see them around. You are leaving on good terms....YOURS!!! I would hate to see some thing bad come of this "little" job....it is not your career!!!

I wish he would be a bit more specific then this. Because I told him that this is where I could have made an error as a new employee. The score cards are inventoried by number and I assume the number of cards missing has to match the number of customers rung into the register and your money. There are times when customers claim to have lost their card. I had a woman swear she threw her card in the trash. I have told him this has happened. After I realiszed it was a problem I documented this. Also, sometimes we get very large groups and they keep going back and forth about how many are golfing. So it is conceivable that I could be off in inventory on score cards while not really being off in money. That is what happens when they put new people on by themselves with no mgr and only 1 day of training. That is one of the things that was making me uncomfortable. As mgr she should be there during the busy nights until she is sure I know what I'm doing and my drawers are perfect.
I keep mentioning the cameras and they keep talking about watching the footage. Either they don't have film in them or they already know who took the money and are watching him.

I would quit too. Listen to your intuition about this person. I am a great believer in when you get a feeling about someone. If she will blame minor issues on someone else, she more than likely would blame theft on someone else. Usually, on a register they can run a tape that shows all of the sales for that day. I would also have some double count or witness you (if possible) counting your drawer when your shift ends.
