Need solution for a kitchen island

The kitchen island that we have now is in terrible shape and oversized for the room. We are facing selling our house due to a job transfer. We really don't have the time and money to have a cabinet w/granite top made. Can someone suggest another quality island that we can use instead? Has anyone seen anything they'd recommend?

Is the top or base in bad shape? You can buy base cabinets at Home Depot very cheap & re use the top you have or have a Laminate top made.

Do you have an IKEA near you? They have some interesting ideas for kitchen islands.

Does it have to have a base? I have a counter height kitchen table, which I can move wherever I want.

I had an ugly kitchen island that was mounted to the floor. We took it up and put it on casters. Now I can roll it out of the way. It has a formica top on it that was just ugly. I sanded the top, put on two coats of KILZ, two coats of high gloss paint and 6 coats of water-based poly. It looks brand new and everyone compliments me on it. It cost about $30 to repair.

It doesn't necessarily need a granite top, does it? If the cabinet is in poor shape, maybe you can paint it a color that would coordinate with your kitchen (I have seen a lot of kitchens lately that have some cabinets wood and some cabiunets painted and it looks nice....adds interest) and then get a decent formica top or maybe btuchers block wood might be less expensive.

Friends of ours have cherry cabinets in their kitchen and they just put in an island that is sort of an antique-looking off-white and it looks nice.

The other option is to purchase a movable island, on casters. But then you'd have to figure out something to do with the floor where your old island was, because it will probably look different.
