DD#1 is in our community summer musical theatre program. It meets every weekday from 9-12 for 6 weeks. Auditions were yesterday. DD#1 said only she and 1 other girl were asked to sing twice! She was very happy and she's normally a confident kid. BUT, last night Dad cut her bangs about 1/3" to 1/2" too short (not good at estimating measurement, but they are certainly above her eyebrows with forehead visible)--I always keep them at eyebrow level, but she didn't want them cut so I told her dad to do it--and his interpretation of eyebrow level is a little different!
Long story short, callbacks are today and I am sure she is being called back but like Samson, some of her confidence went with her hair. She even said "what if I was going to get the cat (the part she wants), but I only get a chorus part because my bangs are too short?" She is totally focused on how bad she thinks her bangs look and not on the fact that you have to nail your callback like you nail the audition. I just would ask for some PD for her until noon eastern time so she gets her confidence back.
BTW the play is "HONK!" a musical version of the ugly duckling.

Get her a cute little sparkly hair clip to hold the shrunken bangs off to one side. The bangs will be the right length in about two weeks, but in the meantime, this is a cute hair trick.

In the meantime,, break a leg ;)

A BIG sprinkling of pixie dust your DD's way!!!!! I know the feeling - I've got two little actresses involved in community theatre. Call-backs are scary but fun! Don't worry about the hair thing - I know I always try to have my girls look nice at auditions, but many a lead has gone to a kid in her soccer uniform fresh from a game!!!

I'd love to hear how it goes - keep us posted! Have you guys been doing this long? We usually do 3-4 shows a year, and are currently in the middle of performance weekends! I'm still in my p.j.'s because I'm too tired to change! Good luck!

Thanks guys! She did get a feature part--not a second lead or anything, but half of the kids are just in ensemble. There are 24 speaking roles and she is the 10th. Considering that this is her first year doing it and seniority does carry some weight, and she is missing 4 days of rehearsal for DCL, this is AWESOME! Her music teacher raves about her talent and I guess she's right!
Her role is a turkey--literally --a teacher for the ducklings at the beginning, and then afraid of Thanksgiving, and then has the last line before the last song--"I made it through Thanksgiving!"
She's excited and thank goodness has forgotten about the bangs, although I may be a nice mom and buy her a nice headband later.
I've done plays since HS and was in a summer theatre (non musical) for 3 years, but I never had the voice she does. I hope this bodes well for her goal of being in the musicals at our HS.
Plus my DS (6) fielded a ball in TBall for the first time this morning, and they put DD#2 (9) in 4 races at this afternoon's swim meet! I'm having a darn good Mom day!

That's wonderful!! Our theater group is doing Honk Jr. this fall. Hope your dd's production goes well and she has a good time doing it!

Yay for your DD!! I hope she enjoys her experience...watch out, it's addictive! We're doing "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" musical in the Fall - auditions should be quite an experience as every girl wants to be a princess! Glad you had a great "Mom" day - be proud of those kids!!
