I have never heard of this, but I just read on another thread that L & M required you to show your car unsurance card in order to decline the extra coverage ? Is this true?? I didn't think they could do that...

Several companies including Payless, L&M, and EZ reserve the right not to rent to you if you don't have collision on a car you own back at home and if you decline their collision. See the rules or policies or terms page on the company's web site and/or on Travelocity.com assuming the more restrictive of the two versions applies.

If it is a slow time of year the rental company probably won't push the issue very far. If it is Daytona Week or other busy time the rental company might.

Still other companies require that non-citizens purchase some of the extra coverages.

I would suggest making a copy of your Dec page from your policy showing the coverage. Never hurts to have it just in case.

Good idea! Off to print on now!

I have rented from Avis, Dollar, National & Alamo and have never been asked. In NY, my insurance covers it under the liability portion of the policy, not the collision.

National (at Orlando) once asked me for proof of insurance (sheet showing how many dollars of liability, how many dollars of comprehensive, etc.). Since at the time I did not find any requirement in their policies, I expected them to give me the car even if I did not have the insurance they were looking for.

The agent went so far as to tell me that "In Florida cars must go out with insurance". That was a brainwashing bluff on the agent's part. I didn't say it but was prepared to say, "Fine, but the renter is not obliged to buy it". Instead I just repeated "I'm declining this coverage and this coverage and this coverage."

After the agent gave up asking me questions and made out the paperwork to hand me I added "By the way could you show me the Florida law regarding insurance?" The agent either couldn't or wouldn't.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think certain credit cards also cover you in the event of an unfortunate incident. I would check to see what policy your credit card has, and if you have one of these cards, charge the rental to that.

As another poster has stated, I have rented with Avis, Enterprise, and Dollar previously, and have never had to show insurance when declining their coverage. In fact, the last two times renting from Dollar, the subject never even came up. They had my decline preferences and that was that.

This is why I won't rent from L&M. They refused to accept the Diners Club liablity only and if I would not give them my personal insurance info I was going to have to buy thier insurance. I walked and went to Hertz.
