We could really use some prayers and pixie dust sent our way! DH's professor very unfairly failed him last semester. This is his last class he needs before he gets his degree, so it's of great difficulty and he really had a hard time. The professor offered little to no help, but reminded him that it needed to be turned it on XX day. DH pulled several all-nighters and got it to him by that day. The next day, he checked his grades online and had a big fat F sitting there. He called to ask what the deal was, and professor told him that it was too late and he didn't bother to grade it. WHAT?! He turned it in on time! That project IS the class grade besides participation. So he disputed it with the school and the dean sided with him in that the professor would AT LEAST have to grade the work. It's not a failing project - he did good work, but DH is so sure that he's going to fail anyways just because of the ruckus he's caused the professor.

So please, just send some prayers his way so at least the professor will give him a fair shot at graduating and give the project the grade is deserves.. we don't have the $1800 to pay to take the class again. His financial aid is gone :sad1:

He would have to give him a fair grade. Does your DH have a copy of his project? If his professor fails him, I would take it up with a higher authority at the University. If it is a quality project, and it was turned in on time (was it emailed - if so then you will have proof as to when it was sent) then you have every right to be judged fairly.

I would not let it go....

Sending prayers you would think the professor would of worked with him since he did turn it in on time.

I've had to dispute grades before, and once the university looked into them, I always got what was fair.

Try not to worry too much! This probably something colleges deal with all the time.

Absolutely agree! Take a copy of the project to the dean if he does not get passing grade. Professors work for you. You pay them for a service so do not hesitate to take it over his head.unfortunatly most do not see it that way :( My dh is a professor part time and there is no excuse for being unfair. If he passes but does not get a fair grade you will have a tougher decision. If it will significantly effect gpa then you may want to fight. The stress of these fights is often not worth it. Good luck!

What TIME did he turn it in? Morning, afternoon, evening? That could make a difference. Also, if your DH had to pull several all nighters then he did not budget his time properly. I'm sorry that is now biting him in the butt. Of course, the professor should be fair but he has to draw the line somewhere and it sounds like your DH ended on the other side of the line.

Wow that's judgemnetal. You have no idea what this mans work schedule is like.

My DH works full time, is an adjunct professor two classes a semester, does some private consulting AND is getting his phd part time in another state. He commutes 3+ hrs each way once a week.

Yes my dh has pulled back to back near all nighters on weekends to meet his deadlines..He puts in 100+ hrs a week right now so he can be a full time professor when he is done. And yes he is great at managing his time as he still has gotten to all the important dance recitals, games and scout events. He is blessed with a great boss who alows him to flex his time whenever he needs and he still pulls all nighters.

Don't be so quick to judge.

Good luck, I'm sure it will work out. It does seem strange though that the professor would give the due date for a large project that is most of the student's grade, the day before the grades needed to be submitted. Projects like that are usually handed in at least a week (usually more) so there is time to read and grade them before the grades need to be submitted. Even in a small class, if all the students handed in the project the day before he turned the grades in, there really wouldn't be enough time to read them all.

Ok, the dean sided with your DH which is good. Now what is the dean going to do about it? I would get that answer first. If the dean will not do anything then your DH needs to keep going up the chain of command. Depending on the organization at the college, the next step could be the VPAA (Vice President for Academic Affairs).

I'm sorry that you think I was being judgmental. MOST people don't work 100+ hours per week so your husband is an exception. MOST people who need to pull multiple all nighters don't budget the rest of their time properly. I know it's difficult to juggle work, family and school and I truly am sympathetic to the OP's husband's plight.

Like I said in my first post, I think it all comes down to WHEN was the deadline? By class time on the deadline day? End of business? Midnight?

ETA: I just noticed in the OP that the Dean ruled on the side of the husband. I missed that yesterday with all the talk of failing and not having $$ to pay for the class again ... I thought the OP was still fighting it. OP, everything will work out, but probably not 100% to your satisfaction. I would be shocked if the professor doesn't grade the project more critically than he would otherwise. That's human nature. I hope that your DH gets the grade he deserves. If he doesn't, your DH will have to come up with an explanation to tell employers why that grade is out of whack with his other grades if they question it. At least he won't have to take the class again because your DH is sure to pass.

I know it's been a month now, but GREAT NEWS!! We JUST found out that with all the debating and formal appeal of his grade, he PASSED the class from that awful professor!! He gave him a B! We were both shocked. What's funny is that he graded it a while ago but NO ONE bothered to tell DH until he got a call this afternoon that his diploma was in and he could come for his exit interview tomorrow :confused3. He was very confused - he applied for graduation weeks ago, but you don't hear back until after all your classes are done.. he was so confused until he called back.

What STINKS is DH is halfway done with retaking the class (with this new professor, with whom he has an A). They put us on a payment plan to pay off what he owed, but he just got off the phone with the Dean because we were afraid that they wouldn't let him drop the current class he's in and we'd still have to pay all the money since it's passed add/drop. The Dean said the money wasn't a problem - he'd already taken care of it, but he was working on making sure DH didn't get an F/withdrawal for THIS quarter.

So... he's done!! He's so happy :)

What happened with his old class.. the reader's digest version.. his bachelors classes are meant to take 2 at a time for 4 credits each on a quarter schedule (4 shorter sessions a year as opposed to 2 semesters a year). He had to take his supposed last quarter with 3 classes if he wanted to graduate on time.. all of these, however, he had to take online because his campus didn't have anyone else needing to take them when he did. Long story short, he wasn't a good professor and DH was having trouble balancing this other 2 classes and tons of hours of work - he worked office supplies and this all went down in August - peak of back to school and he was working 12-14 hour days the entire month. He let this class fall to the wayside but still planned to finish it up his last week of class. His professor reminded him everything was due on the 5th at midnight, last day of the quarter, when he DH called him on the 1st. DH worked and worked 3 all nighters while still working his normal hours, and got it turned in at 1am (The deadline is 2am - midnight MTN time and we're EST). Next day he had an F - called the professor and he said that HIS classes had to turn in their stuff by the 3rd. WTH?! That's when this whole mess started.. I was pretty PO'd at DH for waiting sooo long to work on it, but he was following what he had been told.

Sorry.. that was long.. but it doesn't matter anymore, he's done!! He's so happy to finally pick up his bachelors degree tomorrow :)
