We desperately need a new mattress and my goal this past year was to get one - never happened (just let time get by me). Any tips on how to save money when buying them?

I'd like to know too. We need a twin bed for DD but I'm surprised at the prices. I was thinking we could easily get a twin for under $200. Doesn't look like that's going to be the case.

I have purchased our childrens mattress and boxed springs from Sam's. They are made by Serta. Not sure if Costco or BJ's sell's them as we do not have any of those stores near our area.

I can't really help on the mattress, but we have a smart base for our bed, which serves as the frame and the boxspring in one, and we love it!. It is simple to set up, lightweight, but super sturdy, but way cheaper than a traditional boxspring and inexpensive frame. We have a queen now, and when it is time to get a bed for our (currently 18 month old) daughter, this is what we will get for her as well.

I just purchased a full memory foam mattress on Amazon for $179. I haven't received it yet so can't comment on quality but I figured it had to be better than my old mattress with the dip in the middle. I don't know if this particular one is still in stock but they did have pretty good prices on others as well.

I wait for holiday weekends and then generally all the stores have mattresses on sale. This last time I bought a floor model that was clearanced out. Saved quite a bit.

This is the one that my friend recently recommended to me:

http://www.bedinabox.com

She first got a twin for her daughter, and then about three months later she replaced her own queen. Now we've bought a king from them. Very very comfortable - better than any spring mattress we've ever had; far far superior than our old Select Comfort bed; and perhaps almost as good as our old waterbed.

Not sure it qualifies as "budget", though if we don't have to replace it as soon as we had to replace the Select Comfort bed, it'll be a major bargain!

We have a mattress outlet nearby. They sell mis-matched sets. Meaning that the fabric on the mattress and boxspring don't match. To me it didn't matter if they matched, at least one or both are covered all the time so no one knows!

I just recently bought a king mattress set for us and a twin for DD. I bought a "bunkie board" at a regular Mattress World type store. It is in place of a box spring so the mattress isn't so high and you can store more under the bed. I then bought her mattress at Costco. I had seen very nice Sealy's there for $99 but I think it was a close out on that style/model. When I went to get her's it was the same Sealy they always have for $150.
On our I really shopped around for a long time. I visited every American Mattress, Back to Bed, Mattress Giant, etc. I ended up getting it at Carsons becuase the holiday sale price combined with getting an additional 10% off for opening a store credit card was the best deal I found. I bought a Simmons Beautyrest Anniversary (tight top, my chiropractor gave me info on how pillowtop can lead to back pain - I had major problems with my old pillowtop).

Now, the first set I got was plush firm. I like plush, DH likes firm - I thought this would be a good compromise. It didn't work for me at all. Since they offer a 30 day guarantee I sent it back and got the plush. It is heaven!

If I was looking for a deal-I would find out where those sent back still very new mattresses are sold. I'd buy one of those. There was nothing wrong with the bed I sent back, it was still like brand new - it was just too firm for me. Knowing that now, I would certainly look into that!

My box spring totally fell apart and I couldnt afford a whole new mattress set. I ended up buying a bed frame from Walmart that doesnt require a box spring. I was a little leary about it, but it was money well spent! I was able to keep my old mattress and toss the box spring.

They also sell the "bed in a box" at Wal-Mart online. It would require a frame like I got or platform purchased with it, but they are very highly rated.
