We are having a little boy next week (we have a 3 yo DD) and my wife and I are debating what to name him. I like Luke, she likes Andrew. What do my fellow DVCers think?
Think about how other boys will make fun of his name. Like Luke the Puke. Also, how will it look with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Luke/Andrew Smith, the president of the United States of America"
Reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where Homer rejects the name Larry because he says they'll call him "Larry the ......", then picks Bart and goes "Art, Cart, Dart, E-art...yep, no one can make fun of that name..."
My vote is for Luke. It's simple yet not too mainstream. I picture James Dean leaning up against his motorcycle, replete with leather jacket, very cool!
Best wishes and congratulations!
Edited to say that kids will be kids, even the most unrhymable (is that a word?) names can take on a life of their own. My sister's name is Liz, she was one of the tallest kids in her grade, they used to call her "Too Tall Tessie." Our family being our family, took a liking to this and we call her Tess more than Liz, and she's 36!
and we went through it 3 times.
If I had to choose between Andrew and Luke I would go with Andrew (my middle son's middle name). Both names are strong, and more traditional. You can't go wrong either way (a nice position to be in!)
And congratulations!
Luke seems really popular right now - a few of the new baby boys at church have been named Luke. Also, I can't help it, but everytime I hear "Luke" I hear it in Darth Vader's voice - "Luke...I'm your father, Luke..."
Scary, I know - the price I pay for being the original Star Wars generation
No matter which name you pick, just make sure you give him lots of love! That's what really counts
Hi, One of my DS's name is Andrew and almost 18 years later I still LOVE the name! When he was much younger we did call him Andy but around Middle-School age he asked to be called Andrew and now everyone calls him Andrew. So my vote is for Andrew! Joan
Another thing to consider is how the names sound with your last name. I knew a Luke in High School and his last name started with a K so if you say the full name the first name sounds like Lou (which in my case I wouldn't mind because that's my beloved Daddy's name.) I think there is a rule somewhere that says when you're naming your child the last consonant sound you hear should not be the same sound of the first letter of your last name. (I don't know who made that rule!) BTW, I kinda like Luke.
