We are seriously considering relocating to the greater Kansas City area and are trying to narrow down the geographic area. Our boys are currently in middle school - so middle & high schoools are important. We want to live in the country, within about 30 minutes of the KC beltway. Ideally we'd like a small farm/farmette. Any DISers have suggestions on where to start? Where to avoid?

Do you have an opinion yet on whether you'd like to be on the Kansas side or the Missouri side? If there is a commute involved do you know the location of the workplace? I-435 does a loop all the way around Kansas City so I'm assuming that's what you mean by the beltway?

No opinion yet - is there much difference ... say in schools, taxes, services?

We don't know where DH will be working yet. He may be working for himself. This isn't a job relocation, it is a personal choice. We just need to get to the major artieries that led into the city within a reasonable about of time. We want the peacefulness of the country with the ability to get to the services (doctors, dentist, shopping) we need within a reasonable drive.

Raymore sounds like the ideal place for you. It is about 30 minutes from everywhere, on the south side of KC, and you can find country homes with some acrage there. Also the schools are growing, they open one a year, this year 2! A new HS is going to open in 2009 I think. It is a very small town but kind of a bedroom community.

Lee's Summit also has good schools, but I am not sure about getting acrage there, most of it has been developed and it is pretty expensive (by our standards) It is a lot closer to the city, maybe 15-20 minutes from everything.

Parkville is also a good choice, it is up north. I am not sure about getting a "farm home" there though. I think it wouldn't be much of a problem. It is also about 30 minutes from the city, however you have to cross the MO river and there are only so many bridges, so sometimes (rush hour, construction) it is a PITA. It is a cute little town, very charming, and the riverboat casinos have added a lot of miney to the schools there. Park College is also there.

Avoid the innder city of course, you won't find any farms there. I would rather not say any more about where to avoid, PM me if you have any more questions.

And if you come here, DIS meet!
