DH's company is doing a little shuffling and there are some changes going on which might not be to his benefit. Basically he's the "boss" (job title omitted for anonymity) for the warehouse and truck drivers at a building supply company that just got bought out by a really big building supply company. He does basically many jobs. In his words he supervises the daily operations, dispatching/coordinating the trucks/deliveries, checking the orders to make sure they're correct, pulling orders, loading trucks, delegating tasks, maintaining the maintenance schedules and repairs for the fleet, and the list goes on..

He was a Network Administrator for a few years (10 or so years ago). He has a certificate in graphic design/web design from back when this was the thing to do, but no bachelor's (NOT an option to get one now!)

He's really smart, more than he thinks he is and gives himself credit for. He's a really hard worker, he's reliable, fair, and trustworthy. I'm not just saying this because I'm his wife, either. I would want him working for me.

I'm trying to think of jobs for him that he would be qualified to do, be it a lateral or upward move. Is there a person he can talk to that can help direct him? What kind of jobs/companies need a guy like this?

If he can do something that doesn't entail 50-55+ hours a week and being at work at 5:30 am, thats a big plus. :thumbsup2 We also need about $50k a year.

Thank you!! :)

I worked at a few companies that he would have easily qualified for. Have him look into the following areas:

Supermarket Chains - in our area the warehouses for distribution are in our area. The "boss" and or even dispatch make at least 50K plus

Moving Companies - Try United.

Companies like or equivalent to Ikon Office Solutions.

I would also take note of the Tractor/Trailers in your area and note those with many trucks on the road.

I will say a little prayer for DH. Good Luck.

Would he be interested in going into business for himself? If he enjoyed the web development/networking work, he could probably spin off into a nice business, tapping into the companies he's worked for over the years?

Good luck!

Awesome, thank you for the suggestions! It's just such a broad question that I couldn't narrow down enough to come up with anything. Thank you for being my brains.

Thanks for the prayers!

That definitely crossed my mind! He's got the brains for it, that's for sure.

I would start the web development as a side job because it will take several years to build up a clientele that will bring in that kind of money, keeping in mind that by owning your own business you now have double the taxes, business insurance, and a whole host of other expenses.

There are a lot of jobs out there for warehouse managers or operations managers for trucking companies, etc. that his experience would fit. I know of a lawyer that left his legal job to do display set ups in grocery stores for a soda company because he could almost double his salary doing that (was making about $50k as an attorney makes $98K for the soda company).

Start looking on Careerbuilder and other employment sites for jobs and you will see a lot of ideas.

One company I know of that would be perfect for his experience would be a warehouse supervisor for Schwan's. Look on their website to see if they have anything open in your area. Usually they promote their route drivers into that spot, but not always.

Being away from network and web design for so long, he'll need to invest in training to bring himself up to pace. I was a network admin back in those days as well and technology has changed so much.

My brother drives a truck for FedEx, what you described sounds a lot like what his boss does. Maybe try FedEx, UPS, maybe even the USPS (Federal bennies can be awesome!).

I was going to suggest this.

I dont know where in PA but I thought of, A Duie Pyle, QVC, and Wayne Moving and Storage.

Try places that are your DH's current competition now.

You have to find out who is hiring, that is really the key here. You have to network as well.

You call everyone you know to ask if they know anyone who is hiring in your job field.

In St. Louis for example I know that FedEx was hiring a few weeks ago. We heard that thru someone who works there and then all of them pass it on to people they know. Basically, word of mouth.

DH's brother is looking in that area so we told him. Anytime we hear of something in his field we give him a call. He is working at half of his salary right now for someone else. He used to work for DHL which is now gone from the area.

UPS is in a major hiring mode here. Some of DS18's friends worked in the warehouse at the UPS station over the summer and even for part time soon to be college kids they made pretty good money-started at around $12/hour. One of his friends is still working there and was promoted to 'supervisor", whatever that is and got a nice pay raise $15/hour now. I think the delivery guys actually make pretty good money, probably in the $50K range even. I do know they offer good benefits, even for part time employees.
