Need Job Advice Please

Thanks again for all of the great advice!

I have helped out at my children's school a couple of times. A friend of mine told me I could substitute if I had an associates degree, not sure if this is true or not? My degree is not in childhood education.

As for the employment agency, I have been registered with one here for 3 years, and they have never found me anything. Usually the only types of jobs they get are factory jobs.

I am in the middle of Cincinnati and Indianapolis, so I guess I may have to just start looking there and be prepared for a drive and to spend some money on gas!

Yes, in my state you do need an associates degree for a daily on-call type of sub. The associates degree can be in anything! If you want to do a long term assignment, (20 days or more) you do need a degree, and passing of a content exam - Praxis. The districts would prefer someone with a teaching degree and certifications.

In my state teacher's aides also require 60 credits and passing of a content test

I have been a nurse with a BSN for 20 years. I live what I do and it affords me to be home with my girls a lot as a single parent. Nurses will always be needed, but you now have to have the BSN part for employment. I think phlebotomy would be a great job too. I do not think you have to have a degree, but onsite training. The shifts would be 12 hrs but again you will always be needed and it is not a taxing job OD actually caring, lifting etc. I would not do a med assistant degree like others have said. B/c it is cheaper to hire an MA to run a md's office they will work you like a pack of horses. Long hours and lots of stress. I would also look into a good dental hygeinist program. They pay is good and you would have only weekday hours with no weekends and holidays so you would essentially be working while your kids are in school. Start by calling your local community college and ask for an advisor. That person should be a wealth of knowledge for you. By doing this they would also help with making connections.

Are all of your children in school, if not you will have to factor daycare cost into the mix. If they're in school but to young to be home alone, don't forget to factor in before/after school cost (if you take a job farther away).

I live in a very small town, as well, and, honestly, what many women in your position do is try to find a job (even low paying) that is close in proximity but that is opposite shift of their spouse (to save on the above costs). Yes, Walmart or hotel clerk may not be exciting, but it would get you out, making some extra $$, and get a work history built up.

Then you could go to your local tech school/community college and see about classes. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable taking on more education debt when I had so much staring down at me already, but that's just me.

I've subbed when I've been laid off, but it can be very hit or miss, you can never count on it, etc. If you really want to, and don't qualify in your state to sub as a public school teacher, you could always sub as a private school or preschool teacher, or sub in the public schools as a bus driver/lunch lady/ office person/etc.

Good luck!

Terri

In my county, you must have a bachelor's degree to sub but in some other counties around here you just a need 60 credit hours from college. Preschools might require less, just a 90 hour certificate from the community college. Why not check the website for the school system and see? Seems like that would be the quickest way to find out
